It looks like a can pay a premium and get tickets from a 3rd party, or chance it through the official website 30 days before we go but risk them selling out.

Has anyone done it recently?

I don't recall any issues getting tickets when I last went – we just got them on the day IIRC (it was nine years ago to be fair, so things may have changed).

Just came back from Rome on Sunday. We finalised plans quite late in the day so I had to get tickets for the Colusseum, Forum and Palatine Hill from Tripadvisor. They were £30 quid each which is about double the cheapest but still worth every penny. Still have to queue for security checks (twice) but its a 5 minute job if you get there early enough. The second queue for Forum/Palatine Hill was longer as it was lunchtime by then (maybe 15 mins?) but hey, it's Rome.. expect to queue. The queue for the latter is smaller at the Portale del Vignola entrance. We spend nearly 5 hours across all three sites and could have stayed longer.

@slowpuncheur Brilliant. Got plenty of time yet, but logging on this morning it seems like they go in a flash so I need a backup.

It's the same with Auschwitz now – when I went (19 years ago), it was tickets on the day from the booth. I was in Krakow last autumn and wanted to go back, but tickets sold out weeks in advance and I couldn't even get any through someone I know who lives there and has contacts.

I suppose it is a good thing that people still have a desire to see our history.

As with all sites in Rome, get there early - but get a decent breakfast down you first. You can't take food in but there are vending machines with bottles of water, pop and sandwiches if you're desperate. Enjoy - we loved it.

The official website is fine, but the queue is longer and slower. If you buy from a 3rd party, perhaps with a tour guide you'll get in quicker and will also have a more interesting experience in my view. I bought mine through AirBnB but there are loads out there. The same applies for the Vatican.

A point worth noting is that you need photo ID to get in, passport or driving licence. If you get a very sympathetic security guard and have a charming wife you may get away with photo of said passports on your phones, but this is not in any way guaranteed...
