CFH I always do. Except recently when I like to wind TJ up, but the reality is I feel inclusive of the home nations and see them as representing all of us. I still want to beat Scotland, Wales, Ireland but I want them to beat anyone else.

BTW, both my parents are irish, I have an irish surname and an irish passport (and an english one), but I was born and bred in devon, so I feel english through and through. I tried to support ireland agaisn't england once (not long after I got my irish passport) couldn't do it.

I like banter. Just don't like ABE.

If you go to Wales, Scotland or Ireland you will find excellent coverage of the English national team in Britain what do you expect? FIFY.

in England we always support our neighbours

No we tend to support the underdog - which is often our neighbours 😆

However, idlejon get with the program and stop reading [s]the papers[/s]Murdoch's mouthpiece.
Online I find the coverage quite balanced; each country has newsfeeds dedicated to them.

I'm bad though & keep missing games (apart from England) due to work and taking my son to play rugby. Then the family seem to think that X-Factor and Strictly are better family viewing than watching the games on itv-player 👿

ABE reached a bit of a peak after the World Cup win and ensuing influx of ignorant bandwagoners - the same people who were booing their own England side at Twickenham when the wheels fell off the wagon.

There is always an extra edge when the celtic nations play England but I think there is a lot less ABE sentiment than their used to be. Any successful team is going to have its knockers, apparently Ireland have massive support from the Kiwi fans ahead of the Aussie game tomorrow morning.

In terms of media coverage, its all down to population numbers, there are far more people interested in England than anybody else. Given that rugby is a minority sport, we also have top accept that there are far more people interested in the idea of the England captain having married into the Royal family and then gone on the lash and motorboated some bird in a bar.

duckman try here I don't see england being mentioned on the frontpage. My mother in law (a true jack, Sandfields born and bred) has this as her homepage. Are you looking in the wrong place?

I hate the way they squander their rugby talent and play clueless rugby based on the mistaken belief they are more powerful than everyone else rahter than try and develop a game to suit their players.

What do you think it's like being English then? We hate it even more! It's S-O-O-O-O frustrating!

Actually the best thing about being an English rugby fan is that we can patronisingly support all the Celtic nations but also laugh at any of our Scottish/Irish/Welsh mates when they lose. It's win/win!

well there are 51 million in england, about 84% of the population, so I guess you could ask ITV to devote 16% of their general chit chat to wales/scotland. It does seem unfair but then 84% of the population seems like the sensible lot to appeal to. You have your welsh tv in fact I note on S4c tonight at 9pm there is a whole program of Jonathan Davies devoted to discussing Gatlands warriors. And there is a shit load more here. I envy the welsh coverage, we have to put up with itv's crap output. I wish the beeb were running the show. Actually i envy the welsh attitude to rygbi, I'll bet a greater percentage of the welsh population follow rygbi than the crappy english who love wendyball. Yuck.
So sorry duckman you have plenty of rugby coverage, null complaint I'm afraid.

In fact I note that S4c gets

S4C is financed from its advertising revenue and a fixed annual grant from the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), receiving £94m of funding in 2007.[15] In addition, some Welsh-language programming (including Newyddion and Pobol y Cwm) is produced by BBC Wales as part of the BBC's public service remit, and provided to S4C free of charge. S4C is controlled by the Welsh Fourth Channel Authority (Welsh: Awdurod Sianel Pedwar Cymru or Awdurdod S4C), an independent body unconnected to Ofcom which regulates other UK television channels such as ITV or Channel 4.
From 2013, responsibility for funding S4C will begin to transfer to the BBC, with the DCMS reducing its funding by 94% by 2015.[16] The BBC will provide around £76m of funding to S4C by this date, resulting in a cut of around 25% to S4C's annual budget.[17]

Which is about 32 quid per welshman from the BBC. Now as a proportion of the licence fee that is like a 21% refund, which considering you only represent 5% of the population is a good deal for you, I'm sure you will agree. Especially given that you also get BBC wales etc. Seems like a good deal. Ask your legislature to hassle the welsh broadcasters to up the amount of rugby they cover.

So to sum up, what you are saying is that we should accept that the ITV are perfectly justified in putting up the latest bit of news on,say Lewis Moody's knee, at half-time during a Scotland game. And likewise the ex England players with their "us" and "we" during matches which don't involve England because you have a bigger population? Is that also why when we have players from the Premiership playing for their home nations it needs mentioning every 10mins?(Aparently Tuilangi plays in the English premiership)I would be willing to bet that if the nationality of the posters on this thread is anything to go by, MUCH less than 84% of the viewing audience is English.

YES.

Only because as I have demonstrated that the welsh have had this imbalance redressed through the local media and more importantly S4c. In fact I have since discovered that S4c are showing the rygbi on sunday morning, and you can get english commentary on the red button (if you haven't bothered to learn your own language) and it'll be welsh biased. You lucky devils. I wish we had S4E.

Would you rather you did not have this lovely resource? Come on just face it you have to accept that because you are in a minority that a lot of the time you will be ignored, but at least the BRITISH govt has tried to address this by funding welsh tv. Just don't bloody watch itv, its crap anyway. I wonder if S4c will be showing the england game, I'll bet the coverage will be better.

Why do the English get so pissed off when we dont support them? I couldnt give a flying **** if the English support us or not but I reserve my right to want to see our most local and fierce rivals fail at every opportunity.

Now, can we please get back to the rugby? This is getting to be like a soccer thread, and we don't want to sink to those levels now do we?

Yep I'll say no more on this topic, only if you post I picture of yourself holding a piece of paper saying, if they are not playing wales then I support england. Same goes for AA and Teej.

Personally, i could never support Scotland although i do have a sneaking admiration for the way Wales play - although i feel dirty afterwards! 😛

Look, it's all part of the fun, i quite enjoy the ABE mentality as it makes the anguish from certain quarters more piquant!

I mean, being hated by the Welsh is rather like being savaged by a dead sheep...* (with apologies to Geoffrey Howe for those old enough to remember)

*I thought this would work better with Wales than Scotland.

Another vote for S4C as well, ITV coverage with it's insistent and incessant mention of England annoys me too.

If you go to Wales, Scotland or Ireland you will find excellent coverage of your national teams, in England what do you expect.

I'd posted quite a long reply but deleted it because I just noticed that bold section above.

I assume that you are trolling or you just don't understand the difference between England and Britain? It makes anything else you say absolutely pointless.

But, two more points.

It isn't the English's fault that many welsh people think that Wales cannot produce a decent enough national paper that they see fit to buy the telegraph. Try a local paper or tv channel, this is a red herring.

Crap. The Times, Independent, whatever, are national papers covering events anywhere in the UK. Again there shouldn't be any bias. Local papers cover local things. Of course I'll pick up the Western Mail if I want a 100% Welsh view of things. Why should I then hunt out a Scottish paper to get an idea of what's going on with their team. Again, an anglocentric view of the world.

You lot drop the ABE and I'll happily take the gentle ribbing. I like it. In fact AA and I had a decent discussion about 16 pages back but gradually the ABE creeps back in.

Tell you what, post to some actual anti Englishness, and I'll believe you. And I don't mean pathetic attempts to say that 'I cant see england beating france' this is anti anything. It's an opinion. If I say that SA are likely to beat Fiji tomorrow does that make me a fascist?

Posting a page from a Welsh rugby frontpage is errrm strange. Once again either you are being unbelievably stupid or just trolling.

Th only non-tabloid in the local shop this morning. Apologies, won't do again! 😳 The Independent is normally even worse though.

If there is anybody looking to watch Pro12 games on the likes of S4C you can usually get all the UK freeview channels on Sky boxes and Freeview, you just have to go into the settings and seek out the more obscure channels and set them up.

I never support England and pretty much always want them to loose because of the shite style of rugby they seem to revel in.

[s]On a recent trip to Ireland the Examiner had approx 2" devoted to an England fixture amongst a double page spread on the Irish game. But as an Englishman abroad I didnt expect much more in another country.[/s]

Can't be bothered with the rest of this but Toys19 I agree with what you are saying, but didn't realise 19 was an Irish surname?

Stop bitching. England fans just need to accept anyone but England - its not the same the other way round because of the relative sizes of the countries. You don't get to open the paper and see several articles on an other team but no match report from your team

So TJ, would you be happy to see Anyone But Scotland touted around?

Personally, as i have a Scottish-supporting rugby mate (exactly the oppo of you, born in England but supports Scotland) i love watching him squirm when Scotland lose but strangely enough he does cheer for England when it's against France for example.

I like the rivalry, but I can't stand the ABE attitude, you don't find it's converse in England we always support our neighbours.

I'm not going through all that, but comments like this always make me smile. Why do the english think that we want their support?

Life was good; It's Friday, the wife and kids are up in Aberdeen for the night,my match tmw has been cancelled,so I am enjoying a bit of wine, with Cairngorm chasers, watching a (18mins) slow game NZ v Japan. Phone goes...and I have been re-allocated.. two u18 sides in Fife, who are getting a prem ref "because they have history." So,not only are they quick, but sneaky, full of testosterone, and dirty as well.ARSE!

Back on task, after this weekends games lets have our team of the tournament so far.

I know its a funny juxaposition on that well known celtic boys name " Toys". One of my ancestors escaped from The Prisoner.

I am only mildly dissapointed, you all had the chance to say, no I am not biased against england, the only one who comes close is AA. The problem with this is any comment you make on england in the future will just be ignored as you all comply with obvious bias. Cool thats all I need to know. I shall store this up for future chats.

AA you can record this and remind me next time I accuse you of raging anti englishness..

That any future comment you make about the state of england rugby should be taken with a pinch of salt. Your bias un-qualifies you from making any relavent comment other than that you hate england. Which is fine, just don't expect [s]anyone[/s] me to listen.

Aside from the slightly pathetic auto-hate for England from our neighbours, England are the WORST team to watch aren't they. Oh look, let's hope we get another penalty

Grum - they are when the persist in the 'Jonny Wilkinson' mode.

They have the backline and the half backs to make things come alive, the centres are disappointing though. Flood has much better hands than Wilko and plays flatter. If we had centres like Wales or ( i can dream) France then we could unleash some good through the hands rugby.

As it is, for whatever reason the management insist on 'route 1, crash ball then give it to Jonny' rugby.

Scotland and England's group has without doubt been the most turgid of the world cup. Five teams who know how to lift heavy things quite well but cant string four passes together consistently. These teams have been preparing for each other since the groups were announced. which means lifting heavy things. I took in Scotland's warm up games and most of the Players have hit the inflate button over the summer to compete with the physical sides they were to face.
This has resulted in a loss of mobility / athleticism.
None of the teams will do much outwith the group stages because when the games open up they have neither the mobility or skillset to compete.

I can't see Scotland getting through TBH - and due to TJ's insistence that thought makes me warm inside.

I've still got a tenner for your charity TJ if you're prepared to match it. Put your money on your belief then!

So, tomorrow....

Argentina v Romania, PlB, 04:30 - Argentina by many
Australia v Ireland, PlC, 09:30 - Australia by many
South Africa v Fiji, PlD, 07:00 - I actually fancy Fiji to upset the apple cart here and win by a single score
