Does sir require some bands later than 1986?
The sadly defunct Sons & Daughters
Blonde Redhead
The Gossip's first 2 albums are good. Then they went really shite.
I'm sure I'll think of some more
+ Shonen Knife
Which reminds me - Melt Banana! Especially this:
*Edit what the hoot, did no one mention Alabama Shakes yet? Brittany Howard is incredible.
I'm actually in love with Hayley Williams from Paramore.
Agreed. Although, the last couple of albums have been pretty toss, in my opinion.
How heavy are we going? I've recently discovered a Ukranian band called Jinjer who are great to listen to; beautiful clean vocals (and some nice dirty vocals too), and some really intricate rhythm parts:
The Donnas
More punk than metal, but-
Distillers get my vote, Spinnerette weren't as heavy as early Distillers but still good IMO.
Angry Amputees are cool, and Tsunami Bomb have a few good albums.
Lol ^ Jinjer vid @ 1min 13secs. Give me coookieeeeeez!
Reminds me of Opeth. I always imagined their first succesful rehearsal to have gone like this:
Vocalist: (after singing like a male angel with a mane of hair blowing in the fan-breeze) Guys, always wondered what's this dial do (points to big dial on end of mic)?
B: Don't ask. Don't touch.
V: But it says 'CONTRAST'
B: Just leave it, OK? Trust us Now can we can back to it?
V: (warbles softly) 'veiled comes the daylight through the glass
In the never-ending...(looks sideways before turning the CONTRAST dial to 11)
B: NOOOOoooooo!
V:[img]
[/img]
Savages, of course
CSS. Dunno if they're still going. Drummer must've enjoyed going on tour.
Reminds me of Opeth.
Bloody love Opeth; I also thought that the last minute of that Jinjer song wouldn't be out of place on an Opeth album.
Phantogram
Anathema. They have a male (well 2 actually, but one main one) and a female lead singer (Lee Douglas).
Started off as a classic British Doom metal band but moved slowly into more progressive rock.
Lol ^ Jinjer vid @ 1min 13secs. Give me coookieeeeeez!
Spot on! Didn't expect that.. hilarious! 😆
great call on curve, though I did expect this to start with Doro Pesch, Lita ford and Lisa Dominique, but hey, good suggestions 🙂
my current moodchanger is Chelsea Wolfe
Didn't expect that.. hilarious!
I did warn you! 😀
beautiful clean vocals (and some nice dirty vocals too)
Lisa Fischer with her rather good backing band . 😀
Guano Apes
Wonder if these are still going...
The his needs more Arch Enemy..
No mention of Otep either.
In This Moment
Surely nothing better .
Often struggle with female vocalists but for me it's Sonic Youth and Girlschool \m/
And I know they are not a rock band, but Florence from FatM is stunning. And Lana Del Rey.
Lykke Li
Myrkur
A band I just discovered last week, The Courtesans, bloody brilliant!
Cult Of Luna + Julie Christmas
Windhand
My Ruin/Manhole/Tura Satana
No mention of The Cranberries?
err no. Toss up between Zombie and The Spin Doctors - Two Princes as the worst songs ever written IMHO.
I'd second The Duke Spirit.
Don't think The Joy Formidable have been mentioned. They're ace.
Alunah
Band of Susans
Christ, how have I not heard Alunah before, thanks richardk!
Bit of ska?
Don't think The Joy Formidable have been mentioned. They're ace
Oh yes they were. 🙂 This one of their newer tracks
That song by Le Tigre is ace!
A few more
Madonnatron
One particular Pink Floyd song:
L7, who famously threw a used tampon into the crowd at Reading Festival in the 90’s.
And got their growlers out on The Tube 😆
don't think this lot have been mentioned yet
soz if they have
Now we're talking! How about Shonen Knife
One particular Pink Floyd song:
Always loved the vocals on that. I saw 'em live once and they had Sam Brown doing the backing vocals, absolutely incredible.
And got their growlers out on The Tube
They've been banned from the London Underground ever since.
Couldn't see any mention of Ms Palmer yet?!
OK, I'm going old and rioty
And got their growlers out on The Tube
I think it was The Word
One for B.A.Nana
I think it was The Word
It was 🙂 But I was setting up Cougar's joke 😉
You line 'em up, I'll knock 'em down.
BTW, it was only the singist wasn't it, not all of them?
Well done Bimbler for posting Delain. Suckerpunch is OK but this one is their Magnum Opus. These days they also have a rather fetching female guitarist too
OK, I'm going old and rioty
again - soz if already mentioned
BTW, it was only the singist wasn't it, not all of them?
Don't ruin it! 😆 I've still got it on VHS, so I'll check later... although...
yep -
Well, at least I got the L7 bit right 🙂
What about The Pretenders?
Maybe a bit soft/pop for this thread...
...but after having one of their greatest hits LP's passed on to me last year, only then did I realise just how many decent songs they've put out.
For fans of Beth Hart
Layla Zoe
Jo Harman
Samantha Fish
Two UK bands
Rolo Tomassi
Venom Prison
Venom Prison! What a name! You can tell what they sound like without listening 🙂
I've still got it on VHS, so I'll check later..
Does that bit still play? 😯
Gents ... No Haim ? (least I've not seen any)
Please would someone post up a vid of thier "Oh Well" cover at Glastonbury.
Best B**** ever.
You line 'em up, I'll knock 'em down.
BTW, it was only the singist wasn't it, not all of them?
I'm sure they also auctioned off a chance to shag the drummer 😯
Today's soundtrack was courtesy of Brodie Dalles more recent(2014) solo stuff. Didn't even know it existed.
Have we had Lone Justice yet?

to Be Wicked
Saw the Pretenders a few weeks ago and yes, Chrissie has still got it.
Haven't looked through all the above, so apologies if they're in there somewhere:
Garbage
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Slits
And at the moment Lu Williams is fronting an astonishingly good 3-piece. Maybe not hard rock but boy do they do a great southern rock groove.
One for B.A.Nana
Naw, this ones BANana... 😆
Not strictly within spec but Sharon Van Etten:
DezB checking his VHS:
Angel Olsen:
Chastity Belt:
I didn't see any of these but could be wrong...
Jack off jill:
Scarling:
Something quite a bit different to the above, more post punk style Delta 5:
edit: I was beaten to it on Delta 5!
Only a passing mention to girlschool.
Saw them many times.
Here is a motorhead cover.
Love Delain - so gonna add another vid to those already posted.
little bit generic "female fronted metal band"
Good for a bit of a cheesy laugh
Absolutely love these guys: The Dolmen
these folks where excellent live:
as are - Sky Valley Mistress
After Forever
Blues Pills
For those that like their rock in Hailstorm kinda way:
Anyone mentioned kenickie yet. My favourites, evanesence, have already been taken.
Quite liked Cay.
I was going to have a go at you lot for the lack of
Daisy Chainsaw...I seen her support henry Rollins yonks ago.
Arch Enemy...I get to see next year.
Anyway I remembered these , I think they supported Rob Zombie on his last tour ?
Rusty Spanner - Member
nico VU
spot on .... big VU fan in my youth very lucky to see oddly nico perform this at the leeds beerkeller sometime in the early 80's - no idea why was there but recall Jimmy Page was there as the promoter ?
great thread here's my contribution not same league as VU but just cos i like it
Elastica Waking Up
missed the nico link in above
The pioneers? Remember seeing this lot on a 'wimminz in rock' compilation on OGWT. Pretty special. June, the guitarist actually posts on the Youtube commments, which is cool.
Nemesea if they've not already got a mention. Dutch symphonic/electro metal of similar style to after forever. Now had a change of singer, dunno how she'll worm out.
Not sure if she's been mentioned yet but a guilty please was Sleeper with Louise Wener.
And not really rock I guess but Hope Sandaval of Mazzy Star.
@lordsummerisle good call on Elysium as I'd forgotten about them. Not heard of After Forever but I think they merit further listening.
@ecampbell agree I hope the new singer works for Nemesea. Shame they lost Manda as their last album was their best.
I think Within Temptation have been mentioned but no vid linked so here they are. As Lt Frank Drebin said in Naked Gun "She gave me a look I could feel in my hip pocket"
many of my favourites already mentioned including Joplin, Elastica, Breeders and my current top chanteuse Courtney Barnett
and does this count as rock?
I honestly don't know if I've found many female-fronted band I truly love. There have been lots where I've liked the odd track or three - Senser, Jess and the Ancient Ones etc. However, there are individual albums I like, some including female singers as guests:
- Neurosis and Jarboe (Swans)
- Cult of Luna w/ Julie Christmas (Made Out of Babies) - Mariner
- SubRosa
I need to listen to more of Julie Christmas so perhaps her bands will become favourites.
another blast from the past
Here's some Made Out of Babies:
Black Moth

I'm just going to leave this here.
Remember Naomi Wildman, the uber-annoying kid in Star Trek: Voyager? Seems she grew up.
Tanya Donnelly has been quoted that a new Belly album will be out next year. Looking forward to that.
I’m getting regular updates, I’m helping their PledgeMusic campaign to fund it. Saw them play Bristol last year, and Lush as well, although Lush have now called it a day since their bass player jacked it in.
The Belly gig was wonderful so much love in the place for them, nobody knew Gail was undergoing treatment for cancer at the time, she was really rocking.
So looking forward to the new stuff, and gigs to support it.
These play around Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria when Beccy (the lead singer) is not shredding the Lakes on her Orange Five.
