Some people can benefit from crashes, but even most of the wealthy political funders do best in a "functioning" economy, just one that is skewed massively to their advantage.

I’ve absolutely zero idea why the Tories ever got a reputation for handling the economy well.

Because the right wing media and the tory party themselves have continually told us so for my lifetime at least.

For what it's worth, I heard from someone who spoke to Call me Dave that when he contacted them to confirm he had to drop out of something he was working on with them, he said he'd be available again in October.

I see the massive flaw in the plan there…

I don’t. The tories have been in power for more time than Labour, during my lifetime. Someone with some intelligence is behind that. Underestimating the intelligence of those who actually wield the power to control governments, and influence how people vote, is very foolish.

Found one Rishi positive - a family member is currently on the train with him, both heading to Yorkshire for Christmas. Does mean the train is most definitely running on time 😉

I assume it’s too windy for helicopters, or no way would Rishi Sunak be on a train

Makes sense. That still allows for either Spring or Autumn election.

Tax announcements suggest they're looking at a May election, but they can still kick the can down the road to after the summer break (think of it as gardening leave) if they fancy it.

Wait until inflation* pops up again too.

*Speculation.

Seeing as the current drop is pretty much all down to the drop in fuel prices and that it will go up again the inflation is pretty much guaranteed. If you take fuel out of the equation everything else is rising fast.

Wasn't hugely rising fuel costs the primary cause of across the board inflation in the first place? Reduced manufacturing, distribution, retail, etc, costs, should have a positive effect on the CPI longer term, I would have thought.

The unknown is the effect of the continued Israeli-Palestinian "war", for want of a better word, on the UK economy. The Houthis attacks have the potential to cause huge global economic issues.

Yep and CPI is a con, RPI includes housing costs and  they wouldn't want to broadcast that particular number.

Well you can blame Gordon Brown for that:

https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2003/dec/10/budget2004.budget3

The biggest difference between the two is that HICP does not take into account mortgage interest costs. As a result, inflation is now well below the target, instead of just above.

Ironically:

For homeowners, the switch should be good news, because the Bank can run interest rates slightly lower than it otherwise would have done in order to meet the new target.

Oil is likely moving upwards soon.

Crypto/stocks in the USA have been booming - all that extra interest income filtering into assets.

Dollar weaker as money moves out into more risky assets.

That's what interest rates has done in the USA  Exact opposite of predicted.

He’s all heart.

Stuck on some godawful railway station because the bloody wind means I can’t do my usual helicopter trip, I suppose I may as well spend a few quid (claimed back on expenses, obvs) to feed chocolate to some plebs

I’ve heard that they like that kind of thing

I like how there is someone with serious camera gear partially in view.
Ruins the "spontaneous" kindly gesture somewhat.
On the plus side they have learnt and skipped from him picking them up to walking away purposefully to avoid the embarrassing moment when he looks at the self service tills pitifully and begs for help.
Should have gone to the proper M&S next door which would have had let him buy a far better range of stuff.

Whoever is running PR over at CCHQ needs to be given a raise, and definitely kept in place until the election.

What I want to know is which of the millions of 'key workers' got a piece of the pie, or do they all get sent .000005% of a pie with a side-order of clapping? Obviously all the ones still on strike get nowt.

Just a bit of banter innit. And they that say comedy is all down to 'timing', so top marks there.

In the unlikely event that his political career nosedives he might find the culture in the Met Police more to his liking.

Met officers joked about raping women, police watchdog reveals

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/feb/01/met-officers-joked-raping-women-police-watchdog-racist

Although as long as he remains a Cabinet Minister with some responsibility for the Met I am sure that his humour will be appreciated by some worried officers.

Rishi is set to try and sneak Liz Truss’s honours list out with the New Years honours list and hope nobody notices

She’s awarded peerages for Tufton Street lot who’s economic policies worked so well for everyone

I suppose it’s progress on appointing your illegitimate offspring to the lords?

On the little fella's recent train journey from London to his 'home' in Richmond (North Yorkshire, not London) for Christmas he stopped off in Peterborough - f knows why, there's nothing there - and Lincoln where he went to the Morning Star pub.
Somewhat ironical choice of venue - if only for the name and range of refreshments available; alcohol or alcohol and dining options limited to crisps and/or nuts.
If only I'd known he was going to be there, I would have driven 20 miles there just to heckle.
No doubt the local mp - karl mccartney - had lobbied for this as he's likely to lose to Charlie Faulkner's son who is the labour candidate.
I won't be re-visiting the Morning Star until it's been thoroughly disinfected.

So a March budget tax giveaway would suggest a May election. Only 5 months to go 😅

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/dec/28/may-election-is-worst-kept-secret-in-westminster-says-senior-labour-mp

Expect a quick uptick on corruption, a few last minute deals to nick the last of the silverware, appoint a few cronies to high places...

Also this is mildly amusing:

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/dec/29/uk-ministers-asked-to-explain-fourth-delay-to-covid-wine-cellar-report

I'm assuming they drank it all during the many not-parties that they didn't have and knew nothing about during Covid but haven't yet been nobbled for it so they're just bluffing it out.

Johnny Mercer mega flounce been done? Also the New Conservative outing himself as a bit of a shit?

Not sure he merits his own thread.

Mercer continuing his little war with Carol Vorderman and rather inconveniently for him, keeps getting his own past promises and comments used against him. Oh dear. He's "taking a break" from X now apparently, aka a flounce...

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-67842826

Now we have Bury North MP James Daly doing his level best to show the new conservatives are no different from the old ones and need to be history asap.

A Conservative MP has defended his comments where he said most children who struggle in his constituency were "the products of crap parents".

Perhaps Cleverly should just point out he is a "shit MP"?

i honestly can't see it with polls this far back for the Tories, unless there's a real upswing in the economy shortly

that  said merecer, & big forehead Daly's nonsense has an rnd of days feel.... but then it's been like that since Johnson!

James Daly - who I have the misfortune to have as my MP - shouldn’t need reminding that as the MP with the smallest majority in the country, it only takes 50 parents, crap or otherwise, to change their vote from the last election and he’s unemployed.

It can’t come soon enough. He’s an utter ****!

I see Rishi, spineless as ever, has rubber stamped Liz Truss’s honours list and tried to sneak it out with the New Years honours list

It’s, as predicted, the Tufton Street loons and various donors to her leadership campaign

You’d think anyone with a shred of dignity or self-awareness would be too embarrassed to accept a gong on Mad Lizzies honours list, but that’s not something this lot are overly troubled with

The Beeb has fact checked the claim, he's telling porkies. Worse, the "flow backlog" has actually gone up since he became PM.

Little Rish's suggestion that turning a 97,000 backlog into a 99,000 backlog in just one year can be described as 'clearing the backlog' is now going to get the once over from the official stats watchdog. Shouldn't take long to work that one out, really.

They should start fact-checking him in real time.
