Response from Mark on thread re adverts...

The reason Maserati come to us with their ads is because..
1 - There are 1.7 million users a month coming to this site
2 - The demographic average is way above average earnings and believe it or not they do get a good response from our site.

I thought it was all Audis in these parts, and those that didn't have an Audi pretended to be destitute!

I know 1 person who used to have a Maserati and one 1 who still does - does that count?

Think there's some old battered corgi ones somewhere here. Does that count?

Hold on - does 'good response' just mean that some folk have watched a David Miller vid with a car in it? Not necessarily buying the things?

I've seen a few around, they're quite nice.

I've also seen pics of the forthcoming Maserati SUV. It's gopping. Please Maserati, no.

Really?

Thats a major assumption, and I argue incorrect too.

If they want stats, then I'm sure Mark could concoct some stats about the amount of times Skoda or BangerNomics or Audi has been mentioned in threads.

I own one, on a lease deal. Easily affordable at £2,000/month with a £30,000 deposit, 2,000 miles/year. Use it on my daily commute of 40 miles each way.

My favourite ever toy car was a sublime purple 1972 Maserati Bora

Unfortunately that is the extent of my ownership experience of Maserati.

i clicked on the link because it's a pretty car. I'm old but no way I could afford one, even if some rich bloke had paid all the depreciation for 10 years for me!

I had one about ten years ago when I still cared about these things. It was out of warranty and cost me about £5 a mile for the year that I owned it.

Divorce was pending so I flogged it, lost another £2K so actually it cost £7 a mile to run.

I have a battered Seat Leon these days.

What do you consider to be average earnings BB? And what gives you the feeling that as a group we're likely not to be above that average?

Shirley, the target audience for the adverts isn't people who already own a Maserati? These people will receive direct marketing from the manufacturer and dealer network.

The target audience is the kind of aspirational person who, if they're dumb enough to spunk 5 grand of disposable income on a pushbike, might also spend 100 grand on an impractical car?

Do we know any people like that?

I'm certainly not that demographic being a Peugeot owner. Although it's probably more reliable than some overpriced FIAT.

(There is no envy anywhere in that statement - honest!)

My mate had a 3200GT, he lent it to me for my honeymoon. I had it for 4 days. It was hard work to drive, heavy steering, and insanely fast. if you weren't paying attention it would creep to 110+ without you knowing.

i was happy to get back into my punto!

Not me I've gone the old fashioned t5 and skoda direction.
Guy next door had one for a while when I lived in the posh part of town he never used it in the wet or rainy months as he said the back end wanted to face the other way. It did sound lovely in a petrol head kind of way. If I did want one that add would put me off purely on principal. The new Alfa looks nice if I wanted unreliable fun 😀

Google Analytics (amongst others) can tell you ALOT! Bikerbouy it isn't about knowing specifically what you earn, you fall into a category which gives advertisers an idea what things you may or may not like. Unless you have been browsing incognito via a proxy server for ever then you will have a trail that reveals lot's of things.

1.7 million (individual?) users per month??? 😯

Wowsers...!! That's mental.

Seriously, compare that with how many readers of the magazine per month..? (I dunno, but it must be a lot less than 1.7 million).

Surely that might tell you something. I was an avid fan of ST mag when I first discovered it over 10 years ago, then rapidly became turned off by the tedious recycling of old ideas, cliquey 'in' jokes, the narrow and often seemingly parochial focus of the journos, and the somewhat lackadaisical way in which it was produced.

It appeared to me that 'they' seemed to think that 'we' would appreciate all that stuff as being somehow excitingly refreshingly irreverent, yet it just delivered a tiresomely poor value experience each month. So I stopped buying it and felt quite disappointed at such a missed opportunity for a decent printed MTB mag.

It seems as if ST mag should fill a sorely lacking hole in the MTB media landscape. It should tick so many boxes for potential readers in a similar socio-economic box like myself. (I can't be the only one who feels like this?). Yet it doesn't, because they never seem (to my view) to put their potential readers needs first. Sorry, I appear to have gone off on a bit of rant here. But I can't quite believe that a website as successful as this is not able to deliver some of that success into a printed (or otherwise) format. Sadly, whenever I bother to read one of the mag articles occasionally reproduced on these pages, I'm reminded of the oh-so-tediousness that put me off it all in the first place.

I want to like ST, I really do.

[/rantover]

The new Ghibli isn't that expensive (well not in a world where you can spend £30k plus on a Golf) and is aiming for the higher end Merc / BMW / Audi saloons.

I guess there will be those on here able to afford those kind of leases so it's not the worst place to advertise.

no_eyed_deer

+1

I'm sure if STW got a proper grip on the forum they could be very rich indeed (or a bit richer anyway). Whereas the mag which when it first came out was innovative has been left well behind by better alternatives. Shame really as they did originally offer something that MBR and MBUK didn't.
