I'm not expecting a huge response on this but I know a lot of the forum are well travelled. I'm going to Vietnam in September and looking to ride the Hai Van Pass, has anyone previously done this / know where to hire a reasonable bike?

I’ve ridden it in 2001 but on my own bike. It was v hot and everything that passed me was spewing dirty fumes. I had a massive fruit thing at the top and about 5 ice creams. No idea about bike hire sorry.

Try DMing TonyPlym, he's a bit of a local.

Rode it from Hue on a hired scooter about ten years ago. Pretty at the stop, but as stated it's a main road and there's lots of honking great lorries spewing out diesel fumes. Expect you'd be able to rent something in Da Nang, but it's a fair old climb from there in that heat. The out of town roads probably fine if you're on your guard, but riding in a Vietnamese city requires some acclimatisation as the attitudes there to space and road safety aren't even in the same dimension as ours. I got clattered off a pushbike in Hoi An a few years ago but a lady on a scooter doing 60 with a phone in one hand and shopping in the other...

I hired a scooter in Hue and rode to Hoi An via a trip to the beach in Da Nang for a dip in the sea and lunch at some beach shack. That was pretty much 10 years ago now.

I'll echo what others have said. It's a great road with fantastic views in places but it's also a main road with a fair amount of HGVs. It was generally quiet though when I rode it and it only got busy in Da Nang. Although like most towns and cities it was busy with swathes and swathes on people on scooters. All moving generally as one. Mad!
