Happy to sit at home taking the pi$$ out of others and turn down a request from Prince Harry to perform in Afghanistan – admitting he was too scared to do army gig.
May have just some some fans, well at least one.
about as funny as the black death................. 8)
Doesn't alter my opinion of him at all.
Already thought he was an irritating twerp.
Not just me that doesn't find him funny then?
About as funny as Will Ferrel well maybe less so.
Certainly only has one act.
The office was a funny programme at the time, the rest of his stuff is pretty poor
will ferrel is shyterer............. 8)
Yeah. I always think an awful lot less of people who express a purely logical interest in self-preservation too. Tossers!
Loved The Office and Extras but never been much a fan of him as a stand up comedian. But then again, he should reserve the right not to go to Afghanistan if he doesn't want to.
all mouth and no trousers
What does that mean? has he said he would in the past?
the office would have been funny whoever played brent.................
gervais is a coCk
he bought me and my mate drinks in the pleasance courtyard years ago so he's a top bloke. fact.
the office would have been funny whoever played brent.................
He did write it with Steve Merchant though, so he is responsible for it being funny anyway.
Gervais = thrush.
Slightly funnier then Peter Kay, but only just....
Id rather stick rusty pins in my eyes then pay to watch either of em
Turning it around, how many of the naysayers would go to Afghanistan for work if asked?
Ton - you don't count 😉
Don't worry I'm sure Jim Davidson will be happy to take the gig. He's patriotic and dead funny too 😕
I wouldn't go either, bloody dangerous place
Allthough I agree he's shit, about as funny as piles, your own' not somebody elses, (which are always funny)
I think he's funny.
The podcast with Ricky, Steve and Karl is good - if a little repetitive. (As an aside I can't wait for 'An Idiot Abroad'!)
I didn't find The Office even slightly amusing. Yeah I know I'm one of a few or maybe I just happy to admit it and that maybe I just didn't get it.
What he actually said:
So that's the end of the UK leg of the tour. Back to America next to do more dates and record my second HBO special.Hammersmith was great. It's easily the best live show I've ever recorded. (I know, I know, you'll be the judge of that.)
Had a drink after the show with Chris Martin and Prince Harry. As you do.
Harry was trying to persuade me to come to Afghanistan to perform to the troops. I said I was too scared. He said I could do Basra which was the safest place. Yeh, the safest place out of all the other places in a war zone. I pointed out that when I walk round Hampstead, I make sure I don't accidentally wander into Belsize Park by mistake.
I take risks with my comedy, not my vital organs.
I said I'd think about it.
On the day of the gig he wound me up by sending me a text saying that he was bringing his gran. I was obviously a bit panicked. She would definitely not have enjoyed the show.
At the after-show he got me to sign a beer mat for her. "To Liz II, Cheers! Ricky Gervais" (true)
I will be checking ebay all week in case she is making money off me. I can't help but think that her signing a beer mat to me would be worth slightly more.
well i think he's funny, the office was hilarious, extras was great and his stand up's are brilliant. His films have been a let down IMO but overall he's been brilliant for british comedy.
Its good to hear all the negatives from most people, so lets have it guys, who do you think is funny??
I think his standup is hilarious
I quite liked the Office, more cringey than laughy, and some of Gervaise's stuff on the 11 O'clock stuff was good. Not at all fussed about his stand up.
I really don't think going to do a gig in Afghanistan is going to be that risky - how many planes fly in and out of the place? Shedloads. Lads get blown up on patrol and journos occasionally get kidnapped, but I reckon you'd be about as safe as it's possible to be as a celeb doing a gig out there - they've got to think it's pretty safe to risk a few thousand troops all in one building at once.
As for who's good; Rich Hall, Dara O'Briain, Reginald D Hunter, Kevin Bridges.
the office is hilarious and extras was good too
(i also think phoenix nights was ****in genius)
maybe he was scared, maybe he was busy, maybe he doesnt support the war
as above i dont think id take a job offer there!
ive met him in a fetish club and he was actually a bit of a tit and i got the feeling his date was a hooker
make of that what you will!
i also think phoenix nights was ****in genius
I'm also an unfunny fat **** from Bolton, surround me with world class comedic talent and script writers and more likely as not i'd produce something bordering on comedy genius...
Just isn't funny, much like that over hyped waste of a pasty James Corden
ive met him in a fetish club
You've now planted the image of Ricky Gervais wearing rubber and leather into my mind. Not pleasant.
When it comes to writing James Corden is brilliant. I do get a bit bored of seeing him on TV as a 'celebraty' but he was great in Gavin & Stacey.
I can't stand James Corden and his stupid fat head.
Loved the Office and Extra's, never seen Ricky Gervais live but I can understand why he wouldn't want to go to Afghanistan and entertain the troops.
Gervais's radio show is brilliant...i think he is a knobber, but his laff is too ****in infectious!
I'm also an unfunny fat **** from Bolton
That makes 3 of us.......at least. 😆
Well, I'd certainly turn down a chance to work in Afghanistan.
Especially as I'm going to a soldier's funeral tomorrow.
I don't see what the OP's problem is.
Thought he was ok until I saw one of his shows where he "ironically" made jokes about terminal kids for over 20 minutes; having a very sick baby myself just makes me think what a **** he is.
Whatever part he plays, he's always the same d1ckhead. I don't find him funny either. More like an idiot who struck lucky.
i like bernard manning 8)
He's not acting in The Office, he's just playing himself. He's the sort of person I just wouldn't tire of hitting!
i like bernard manning
Yes, I love his turkey drumsticks.
Ricky Gervais is genuinely funny, Extras is amazingly good, rewatched it all recently. Likewise The Office.
I don't get Ricki Gervais humour. The Americans like him though.
The podcast and audiobooks with Karl are amazingly funny, IMO, I know they are a little contrived but still make me LOL a lot.
The standup and the office are OK, extras is crap.
I don't blame him for not going, I wouldn't
To be fair, the Basra branch of the Comedy Store is rubbish.
It's full of obnoxious stag parties down from Baghdad for the weekend, I got some dirty looks when I asked for a draught Carlsberg too.

I bet you couldn't eat a whole one though eh? 😉
He's on my first to go list once I reach world domination. Along with jm carey.
Gob shites the both of them.
Steve Martin too, for crimes against humanity - making tripe like he does.
[edit]
Except dirty rotten scoundrels. That wasn't half bad, but then I think the half good was more Michael Caine - he's on the keep list!
The Office and Extras were great, the Simpsons episode he did was crap and The Invention of Lying was the biggest load of shite I've seen (I'm assuming it didn't get amazingly better in the second half, I had to turn it off before then).
I'm always amazed on here, at how different people like different comedy.
Amazed I tell you.
Never understood his popularity, i don't find him funny at all. It's a bit like watching a real life version of colin hunt, and i never even found that piss-take funny either!
Personally I think he's quite funny. Not everything he says is funny - but isn't that true of most comedians? And as has been mentioned above, it is his choice as to where he goes. His response was a typical Gervais answer which leaves you none the clearer as to his real reasons for not going but, that said, he is also entitled to not explain his reasons or motives for doing or not doing something (unless it involves breaking the law and a court). He may well do a lot of other charitable things that he would rather not talk about. But then again, he is entitled to not do anything for charity either. Why would that be our concern?
Like The Office and Extras. His stand up is not for me.
I like Stewart Lee.
Loved the office and extras...only because it's so cringeworthy...stand ups ok. BUT watched the trailer for "idiot abroad" the other night, his laughing at the fella he's sending round the world was so obviously forced and false I switched it off!
But if he doesn't want to ship out to Afghanistan for a gig that's his choice.
the office would have been funny whoever played brent.................
gervais is a coCk
what a load of bollox (but your are entiltled to your opinion:)
for the comedy genuis that was 'the office' you cannot beat that and i salute him. lots of my mates cant stand him and never 'got' the office but i think you have had to actually have worked in an office to understand it fully.
his stand up is not brilliant, but he is not the worst.
i love alan partridge and vic and bob aswell, again mates cannot understand what i see funny in it.... you either get it or you don't.
i think that type of comedy is surreal, compared to more common 'middle of the road' stuff
then again some of my mates find alan car, peter kay and Al Murray funny and i think they are utter tripe!
each to their own though!
IMO...
11 O'clock show stuff was great
Loved the Office
Extras was so-so
Podcast is ok
Stand-up is good enough
I've avoided seeing his films
I'd rather watch Gervais do stand-up than anyone else.
I think he's a complete twonk but at least he had the honesty to say he was scared. Too easy to say 'other commitments' or some such twaddle.
Steven Merchant is the brians of the outfit, though. I'd listen to him all day, RG would be switched off in minutes.
Never really 'got' Ricky Gervais, he leaves me cold. Never watched The Extras, and when I've seen him outside of that and The Office he's been about as funny as a dose of the runs.
I thought the Office was alright despite Gervais rather than because of him. The real stars of that show were Mackenzie Crook and Martin Freeman.
IMHO, etc etc.
I sometimes find him funny, sometimes extremely irritating! However, echoing what ScottChegg said, at least he had the balls to admit he is too scared. Gervais has chosen to make his money as a comedian with a tiny chance of death whilst at work, soldiers choose to earn their keep in war zone., I don't see why he should go if he doesn't want to. I wouldn't work in Basra right now, no flipping way!

Fixed, as they say, that for you...
I think he's a very clever and sensitive bloke, and his films are pretty good I reckon. I don't particularly like him as an actor though as he does struggle a bit to get into the characters he's created.
Actor - no
Writer - definitely yes.
He has written a lot too.
theres only one way to end this thread, the way the office ended...

"Life is just a series of peaks and troughs. And you don't know whether you're in a trough until you're climbing out, or on a peak until you're coming down. And that's it you know, you never know what's round the corner. But it's all good. 'If you want the rainbow, you've gotta put up with the rain.' Do you know which "philosopher" said that? Dolly Parton. And people say she's just a big pair of tits."

'brians' 🙂
I think Ricky is a smart bloke to be honest. I'm somewhat ashamed to say I've learned quite a bit from hearing him explain stuff to pilkington!

Shit sorry, I seem to have ****ed that up
