First off they say they won't refund postage. Is this right?
Obviously they will say it got lost in the post or was an empty box.
Whats the best way to avoid this scenario?
They are in Scotland so me dropping it off is not an option.

Yeah they can refuse to refund postage.

Send it tracked courier with a signature needed at the other end. It's only small so should only cost £5 at most.

That doesnt matter as long as you have POP PP will refund

And re postage, if it was auction, they dont have to. If it was SCO or BIN they have to unless stated otherwise in the listing

Crazy as it sounds but tracked and signed for works even on Scotland.

open a return as 'not as described'

seller has no choice and is required to pay postage - they just don't realise it yet..

I didn't think there was a mechanism that compelled sellers to pay return postage, though you certainly can raise a successful dispute if outgoing postage is not refunded

occasionally eBay will send you a prepaid parcel force label, but thats only if the seller didn't respond and the claim was in your favour, i had it 3/4 times a couple of years ago, but I've not returned anything recently,

never in the history of eBay have they made sellers forcefully refund return postage, that is the responsibility of the buyer

Under SoGA a retailer is obliged to pay return postage unless they make it clear before you buy that they won't, then they don't have to.

How (and indeed, if) that applies to personal sales under eBay I don't know. But that's the situation for normal online purchases.

What's faulty with it?

Apple warranty is on serial number, if it's still in warranty pop in with it and they will swap it for a brand new unit.

Type the serial number in here -

https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do

Might be worth a look because you will end up with a new first hand handset.

Definitely open a case, I've had to do this and got it returned FOC.

You've paid for this service with the excessive fees....

You are right about soga but this does not mean there is a mechanism to compel the seller to pay return postage, short of small claims court, of course any good seller would have offered to pay

If buyer opens a 'SNAD' claim, ebay determine that you pay the return postage. Business or private seller

- the blurb people write has no bearing on this.

I can only speak from my own experience -selling a 'for parts not working' item. For which buyer opened a SNAD return request. Reason: 'it's not working' 😯

If you do not comply, eBay will likely send a return label at your expense.

So good for the OP, not so good for a hard done-by seller..

I had a buyer try to do exactly that. Ebay found in their favour until I pointed out the wording on the listing and the fact the buyer asked questions about what was faulty and some symptoms. Took a while to sort out.

OP. Just raise a "not as described" with ebay and let them sort it out.

I had assumed posting it back would cost about £20 in the end it was £7.25 , fully insured and traceable. Not the end of the world , I dread to think how much I would be out of pocket if it was a bike I was returning.
