I've just put my T4 camper up for sale, initially on Facebook. Someone has contacted me who's interested in the plate (T4 4 MTB).

So I get that I can remove the plate online, and read on another thread here that the DVLA will give me a code instantly to get new plates made up with the reverted number. I get that I'll have to ring the insurance to tell them of the change and that a new V5/MOT certificate will arrive hopefully a few days later as otherwise I'm going to be stuck selling the van.

But how do I sell the right to the plate on - do I also get a code I can give to the buyer or do I have to wait for a V778 to arrive in the post?

All the blurb talks about immediately transferring the plate to a new vehicle and I'm not sure that's what the interested party wants to do.

For anyone's future reference, I've now done it online.

Within 2 minutes it provided me with:

1) A retention certificate number which I can give to the buyer to allow them to transfer it to their vehicle
2) A form of authorisation for a new number plate which I've printed off.

The promise of a new V5 in 3-4 working days.
