Resting heart rate ...
 

[Closed] Resting heart rate has jumped up - even though I'm fitter

First things first, I'm not normally one to pay too much attention to my resting heart rate, I know it's not a great indicator of overall health/fitness.

However, I've been keeping an eye on it over the last month following a surprise reading at the docs and it's a fair bit higher than what I'd expect (jumped from being consistently 50-55 to now being 55-60).

The thing is, I'm as fit as I normally get. Winters are usually pretty full for me, and I feel like I'm in top form at the moment. I'm not on any medication, moving jobs so quite stress free at work, not been ill in quite a while etc. Can't see any reason for the jump?

Anyone else had a sustained jump in heart rate for no apparent reason? Doc isn't particularly concerned, and neither am I, but perhaps slightly worried I might be overdoing it (although I do get lots of rest)?

Check ya blood pressure. Not sure if there is meant to be positive correlation but I have been working on reducing my BP (doctors orders)which has now come down to the correct levels, but I notice my HR has gone up... ie the lower the BP the higher HR..?

Whilst it may be perceptible to you, a doc isn't going to be interested in that sort of increase.

I suspect you may be a little worn down, or are fighting something off without realising.

Had BP checked at the same time scruzer (was a full MOT) and nothing unusual.

The only thing which seems to be out of place is my resting heart rate, which is why it's quite odd.

Meh, if it stops completely then I'll go back to the doctor ๐Ÿ™‚

Yea I was never fussed about a full mot but the missus talked me into it, ended up with high choleserol too. Glad I went now. All back on track without the pills!! It can be done.

Ourmaninthnorth +1 I would measure it over a longer period. Plus are you sure your previous measurement was not a blip?

Don't joke.

2006 - GP agrees to sign me off for Etape so long as he does MOT. ECG shows up weird trace.

2007 - weird trace is diagnosed as right bundle branch block. Cardiologist: "It's not that uncommon and has no effect on you. Carry on as you are."

2011 - have weird flip-flop feeling in chest for 3 days. Go to GP, mention RBBB, referred to new cardiologist.

2012 - diagnosed with lone atrial fibrillation (like what ton has, but not (yet) as bad). Tests ongoing.

March 2012 - letter from cardiologist calling me in for a "flecainide challenge" in connection with my harmless(!) RBBB.

Turns out I'm being tested for Brugada Syndrome, (often the first) symptom being sudden death....

Mine was about 90 when taken at the docs, and he wasn't concerned at all in fact he said that was normal to good.
Had some tests for another reason a year ago. Part was the treadmill, after 35 minutes and gradually reaching full on running it was about 119.
The doctor wanted to see me after that, we sat down and talked. When I told him I race and ride and have my heart doing 170 with no ill effect he just closed the book on me.
Proper resting is early 60s.

My wife on the other hand who looks fit and well has never excercised in her life and has been ill since her teens has a resting rate about the same as yours.

We are all just punters compared to pro athletes with their crazy readings. I don't take much notice of what it's doing when I'm resting, just what it's doing when I'm training ir racing.

Aye, going to forget about it for a couple of months and then check again. If it's still hitting 60 then I'll go back and see doc.

Previous reading range was based on readings over about 5 years, so not much chance of them being massively out.

My caffeine intake has been pretty high recently, will cut that out for a bit. Will feel like a complete tool if that's what's been causing it ha ha! ๐Ÿ™‚

That sucks but glad they've got you on the radar now though. Hope it turns out to be something less serious.

I used to have a slightly dodgy ticker when I was younger, and although nothing serious, it does mean I get concerned when it does unusual things. Docs are normally all over this sort of stuff though, BUPA tested me for about 5 months last time, I was even peeing into a 10 litre container for a couple of weeks ๐Ÿ™‚

Are you dehydrated? Sometimes the heart can work harder if you haven't got enough fluid in you?

Or you are fighting a bug as per above

have you ramped up training?
more recovery required?

raised HR is classic sign of over-training too I'm told.

Likewise. Often it can be "hidden" on an ecg trace, so they pump flecainide into you which either confirms you're ok or not. Let's hope he's being overcautious and that I'm, OK..!

A friend's wife had this symptom, which persisted, turned out it was an early indicator (or rather side affect) of breast cancer ๐Ÿ™

The upper and lower dont change very much with training I understand.
My resting rate when I was quite fit (and younger) was low 40's but my maximum was never higher than 175 which is quite low.
My brother has a higher resting rate but a much higher max of well over 200.
We compared our rates when training together one day and I was running around 140 ish while he was around 200.

Its all very personal and its about performance and eficiency within that "window" Unless you have a great deal of data over a long period I dont put much store in it myself.

Hopefully its just too much caffeine! ๐Ÿ˜‰
