[Closed] Replacement garage door remote (or how to programme a new unit)

Hello all

We have an electric garage door and have the two original remotes. However one has been dropped and something has snapped inside rendering it broken and the other remote is a bit dodgy (it doesn't always work first time - sometimes it can take three or four attempts).

I have tried the programmable remotes that you can get on Ebay/Amazon etc but none have worked despite following the instructions. I understand this can be because some systems require a new remote to be programmed via the receiver rather than remote to remote. Unfortunately we have no instructions (or even know the make of the system) to help advise us.

Are all replacement remotes equal or are some better than others? Would a trip to the local Timpsons (who claim to do replacements etc) be more fruitful?

Thank you.

You need to know if the original is rolling code or not, that will be the issue.

I have a dual - universal remote that does both types as my alarm is fixed code and my opener is rolling code.

Rather depends on the manufacturer no?

@molgrips - the issue being is that we have no idea who the manufacturer is - we inherited the garage door when we bought the house, there was no documentation supplied and nothing is branded (the remotes we have are generic ones).

HELP! So I got a replacement remote which was marked as being 'DCS' (Dynamic Code System) as per the original. I followed the instructions on my original remote packaging: stand next to receiver and press the button on the back and the receiver should sound a beep (which it did). Then press the button on the front of the new remote within ten seconds and it should programme it. Unfortunately it didn't work (however the red LED below the 'reset' button flickered as I pressed the button on the new remote).

To the left of that 'reset' LED is a 'Prog' button. Would this send a programme code to the remote or is it likely to completely screw things up?
