Normally good at keeping out this sort of crap - constantly run MS Essentials and Malwarebytes but this bugger managed to sneak in and cannot get rid of it by normal means.
Any pointers would be appreciated.

You're kidding right?

First pointer - google.

Come back if none of the ~9710 results don't work. There are a wealth of sites dedicated to this sort of problem.

If you look closer all of the first three pages on google are for dodgy sites that ask to download a programme to remove it or pay a premium line on how to do it.

Ay-ay, give the guy a chance!

What OS, what browser?

If it's Win7/8, a recent problem, and you haven't changed anything else, try a system restore.

YouTube. Had a simmillar thing on ours.
Basically, boot into safe mode & run regedit.
Delete the entries under local machine etc.
Then reset all your browsers.
If you search YouTube there's videos on there.
Easy enough to do.

Then install AVG.
