[Closed] Recycling - does anyone actually want my old socks?

I've been rationalising my wardrobe, and discovered that I have at least half a dozen pairs of thick hiking socks that are in perfectly good condition, but are surplus to any possible requirements I might ever have. I could just chuck them out, but I am thinking I should either put then in a Red Cross bin, or dump them in a place I know homeless people hang out. Thing is, in either case - does anybody actually want my old socks? Or am I wasting my time and liberal guilt?

Liberal guilt indeed.
Put them in a charity bag
Or donate to a gentleman of the road
Or just use them for rags in the garage
Or find a local charity that encourages people to get outdoors
Etc...

Homeless people I'm sure would love awesome socks, autumn is on the way. Where are you, surely there's a refuge/outreach? 'Liberal guilt' my arse.

interesting thread. after reading george orwells 'down and out in paris and london' last week, i too had similar thoughts about handing out clothes. wouldnt know the best thing to do tho, much like OP. who receives the clothes from places such as the firefighters charity bins outside the stations? low-income families? homeless? id prefer it if they went to people on the streets with absolutely nothing. if i could guarantee that, id chuck half my clothes in there quite willingly.

EDIT: a quick google suggests theyre just made into other clothes, so not really what im after. how do you ensure your clothes go to people walking the streets, short of finding someone and handing clothes over?

If it feels a bit odd justing handing out socks to someone on the street, you could search for your nearest homeless advice centre (e.g. Home-start) or ask your Council's housing department if there is a shelter in your vicinity. They would be happy to take donations and hand them out I am sure.

They're made into rags quite often, for use by greasemonkeys/cleaners. ๐Ÿ™

Yes - that's what I'll do ๐Ÿ™‚

Exactly - seems a shame to take some Merino wool in sock shape and turn it into a mixed up rag.

If they are absorbent, any male teenager can probably figure out a use for them. ๐Ÿ˜†
