whats good out there as i need to increase my training and therefore am thinking about using a recovery shake to aid the recovery process
ta
Chocolate milk 🙂
yes id heard that, i'll see what else gets metioned, the ability to store a big tub of powder may prove less hassle andmore cost effective
Yeah chocolate milk is fine in terms of benefits, although I generally use powdered For Goodness Shakes stuff mostly just for the convenience (lasts ages, dissolves quickly in water and tastes surprisingly good)
Ran the 3 peaks yesterday (yorkshire)
Recovery was fish and chips and pint of beer (real ale natch). Can't think of anything else with the right level of simple / complex carbs, protein and fats that would have been as effective. Can you?
dose based on ~22g protein max intake (so if mixed with milk, u need to take that into account). Take ASAP after exercise, def within 15mins.
buy the ingredients (maltodextrin and whey protein)from myprotein.com or similar, maybe add 6g L-glutamine per dose.
take a multi-vit/mineral at the same time.
Much cheaper than buying torq etc at £45 for 1.5kg and you control exactly whats in it.
No flavourings (unless u steal a bit of the kids nesquik like me)
no artificial sweetener
no soy protein, only whey
no emulsifiers.
SIS is nasty and contains most of the above.
If you buy proprietary stuff, torq or zipvit are amongst the best.
All of above in IMHO, etc.
I love the Thank Goodness Shakes stuff, but seems to be hard to find now.
CNP Pro-recover is my personal choice. Mixed with water. Noticeable difference between using and not using after a training.
I use SIS Rego, strawberry flavour. Tastes nice, legs feel better in the morning than when I don't use it so it therefore works (not exactly scientific testing!).
USN Whey protein for me. Love For Goodness Shakes but to expensive.

Website to get for goodness shakes.
best stuff there is IMO,
I used to bother, now I don't. Unless You are/I was to regularly ride enough that you/I'd not recover between rides and that recovery was impactiong on the ride it's a waste. Why pay to recover faster unless you're planning on going out for another 100 base miles the next morning, or if you struggled through that last 20min FTP interval because the previous days 5 were still in yoru legs, just take 24 hours off and spend the money on nice steak.
Only use mine on weekends away now to replenish betwene rides i.e. if I'm doing four rides in a weekend rather than one.
Whey protein =/= recovery drink, although you might have that as well if your aim was for more muscle
Train 10-14hours a week 180-200miles.
Normally finish my session with a glass of milk and cookies (home made) ...no I'm not a child. Or a bowl of Cornflakes/Crunchy Nut. Works good for me and not that expensive whilst still feels relatively natural i.e. not a load of powder!
Although at races use a full on recovery shake ZipVit or the product I'm testing for work as its just convenient one bottle just add water.
Recovery was fish and chips
Surprizingly effective and a favourite of mine.
I've even done fish n chips the night before the ride too. during which I felt good and went like a train.

except your liver now has to deal with the alcohol as well as metabolising what you eat into glycogen to replace what you used up. if alcohol was more effective than other fluids then i'm sure all the pro teams would use it as part of their recovery programs. 🙄
Well if I was on a pro team maybe I'd have just had the fish and chips !

best stuff there is IMO,
£18 for 8 sachets
wiggle £15.59 for 12
EDIT
£11.70 for 8 sachets on wiggle
That's a lot more expensive than chocolate milk from the supermarket. Is it any better?
I'm doing a lot of running at the moment as have a season of Triathlons ahead of me this year. Tried and tested recovery smoothie for me is as follows:
Juice of one Apple
One avocado
One banana
Handfull of brazil nuts
Crushed Ice
All in a blender then enjoy.
Works a treat.
Recovery XS from MyProtien is very good and also cheap. As well as a protien / carb balance is contains vit c and others minerals needed for rehydration in one shot, which makes it v good for cyclists.
Asda's own Chocolate milk, £1-1.25 per litre, depending on whether its on offer.
all the other flavours are good too 🙂

Herbalife Endurance Rebuild for me. Superb stuff and their Prolong for during a ride.

It has a higher protein content - you only get about 4g of protein in a milk shake thing.
I use SIS Rego Strawberry, or Frij strawberry shakes when Tesco has them on special.
It works for me, kills a thirst well and makes me feel better. I don't like eating straight after a run/cycle so this is ideal for me.

I drink a pint of semi-skimmed milk and chocolate nesquik after rides, at least 20g of protein in that plus lots of carbs that are very important for recovery.
Glass of milk and a banana
Used to really like the SIS Rego stuff until I had a thorough mocking from some science nerds, no doubt it works.
Just not well enough to prise pennies from my cold vice like fist.
Fish Supper on the other hand......
Little bottle of chocolate yazoo- tasty, possibly good for you.
I'm quite partial to the SIS pink goo- it's kind of horrible but nice, in the same way banana flavour medicine is, and it convinces me it must be doing some good because why else would I drink pink goo?
MrSmith - Memberexcept your liver now has to deal with the alcohol as well as metabolising what you eat into glycogen to replace what you used up. if alcohol was more effective than other fluids then i'm sure all the pro teams would use it as part of their recovery programs.
You are not invited to my party.
No need for expensive powders - a glass of nesquik with semi-skimmed milk (or skimmed if that's your bag) has everything that the science drinks do. Also no need to buy in bottles of pre-made stuff, assuming you have access to s spoon for stirring.
I use Nutri 1st Lean protein - 34g of protein per serving, and add 10g of creatine monohydrate to it. I use this after every ride and gym session - definitely cuts cumulative fatigue and soreness, meaning I can train harder, more frequently.
All depends what you're looking to achieve I guess!
For Goodness Shakes is best because it comes in a silver bottle, and everyone know silver is a sciencey colour.
There was a study on some website that's been linked here a few times. Basically generic flavoured milk (Yazoo was the tested one) came out basically the same as For Goodness Shakes. I tried it, didn't notice a difference other than saving 40p a bottle so stuck with the Yazoo.
This bloke has recipes for home-made stuff too as well as gels etc.
This isn't the delirium tremens thread I was expecting

I get bloated if i use whey protein,so this really works for me

on the topic of Forgoodness Shakes if you use the athlete store website they have a price match policy as someone pointed out on wiggle it was cheaper.
Email them and they will match it for you.
Sainsbo's (and I assume Asda's, as they tend to be all much of a muchness if not the same) is between FGS and Frijj according to BenjiM's values. And half the price 🙂
Another vote for Nesquick (strawberry) and milk.
