MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
...ideally on Netflix UK for maximum bonus points.
Name the film, tell me why it's ace.
Office Space
Funniest film ever
OP how old are you ?
Dead of Night.
Genius black and white Ealing horror/comedy film, massively influential, genuinely scary and hugely atmospheric.
Never gets shown anymore, which is a massive shame.
Alternatively, Green for Danger - same period, wonderful wartime murder tale and it's got Alastair Sim in it.
Best film you've never heard of? Offhand, Plunkett & MacLeane. Proper funny, dark highwayman romp with Bobby Carlisle and that prettyboy who was boinking Angelina Jolie.
The Lives of Others. Just cos.
12 Angry Men
Superb cast, great script, atmospheric direction, totally engaging from the first minute to the end credits
Untouchable, based on a true story. Best film ive seen for ages
Not to be confused with untouchables this is a french film, really moving but also very funny.
Trollhunter
Daft as a bag of Thor hammers, but very entertaining.
Spies Lies and naked thighs
The best worst film you've never seen... best I've got at short notice.
12 Angry Men
Superb cast, great script, atmospheric direction, totally engaging from the first minute to the end credits
Absolutely ! A brilliant film no special effects just 12 blokes in a room and in Black and White
if you are using chrome as your browser, install "mediahint" and you will have access to the full US netflix library.
Lots of films and TV!!!
Yamakasi - end of argument....
Les visiteurs
Seven samurai
The Guard.
The Life Aquatic
You've probably seen it, but it is on Netflix and its a great film
Also +1 for Office Space,
Although I thought it was great, but my house mate didn't get it at all
All the presidents men
Redford at his best & 70's-tastic
cache - hidden
Primer, a low budget twisty plotted Indie time-travel film, if you like Butterfly Effect, Memento etc you will probably like this, too
Hard Candy very very well acted, small cast home invasion film with a twist.
Can be brutal at times, & will make you wince at least once (not gory though, everything is implied). The subject matter is uncomfortable (& possibly upsetting) so check wikipedia/imdb for the plot precis first.
Wasabi fun french action comedy, set in France/Japan Starring Jean Reno and written & produced by Luc Besson. The english dubbing has terrible lip-synching issues, the subtitled one is far better
'Lantana', with Geoffrey Rush and Anthony Lapaglia. Starts as a whodunit, but turns into something much more interesting.
Also, 'In the Bedroom' with Sissy Spacek and Tom Wilkinson. Really stayed with me, that one.
And while we're here, 'Miller's Crossing'. The Coen brothers strangely overlooked prohibition era gangster flick. Albert Finney's scene wielding a tommy gun to the strains of 'Danny Boy' is a highlight.
Dunno if any of the above are on Netflix, but all are worth your while.
OP how old are you ?
30, so not too old, not too young 😉
But you don't need to go on the age of the film. Pick that film that you really like but was under rated or no-one else you know does. Sell it to me!
In general I like all sorts of films except horror/shock stuff, not a huge fan. However, your suggestion might be good for another reader, so crack on anyhow.
Some good suggestions here, only seen about half, so keep them coming.
Will bookmark this for future reference...
-5 points to those that don't give reasons ;-P
Headhunters, Silver Linings Playbook, Moonrise Kingdom and another recommendation for Untouchable.
Why? I enjoyed watching each one!
Southland Tales, by the guy who did Donnie Darko (and similar in tone). It straddles that fine line between deep genius and utter bollox but after repeated viewings (necessary I think) I still can't make up my mind... An odd and at times brilliant cast too. Worth a watch though if you like head-scratchy sci-fi.
Once
A film about an irish busker / washing machine repair man.
Lots of good music. Great storyline
Probably seen it but Tora!,Tora!,Tora ! about the lead up to Pearl Harbour is very good and makes the film Pearl Harbour look like the crap it is .
Meek's cutoff.
Western pioneers get lost and it all goes tats-up. Lots of people slated it, probs why I liked it!
And the Informant. Matt Damon in can act shocker!
Betty Blue?
Blue Velvet?
The Breakfast Club?
+1 for Hard Candy [edit] and wasabi
I guess you'll have seen Fight Club, Leon, Run Lola Run, The Matrix, and anything worthwhile from this century.
Split second?
The Hitcher?
Long shot this, but have you seen "The Princess Bride"?
Safer bet, "Taxi", the French version with subtitles.
+1 for Tora! Tora! Tora! although I don't think Pearl Harbour needs another film to make it look crap. It does that very well on its own.
The Lives of Others is also very good. Lots of good foreign language films out there that are worth a look.
The Station Agent is a small independent American film which I thought was excellent. It's been out for a few years, so it should be on Netflix.
it was 'The Hide', certainly worked for me and the gf
Start of Review: On the windswept Suffolk mudflats creaks a bird-hide, inside which hovers Roy Tunt, a prematurely aged, mildly obsessive-compulsive birder. With one more sighting - the elusive sociable plover - he will have 'twitched' the entire British List. Tunt has his shortwave radio, packed-lunch and a portrait of his ex-wife Sandra for company.
I wasn't going to watch it either.
ps if you like low budget/cult/weird/sci fi try Dark Star *edit - they nicked a bit of the end from R.Bradbury, the bomb debate is classic and the alien fight and lift scene sequence I truly love, it may be surprisingly close to what would really happen if Red Dwarf had been crewed by forum members
I missed out the 'why'.
betty blue: the director's cut - beauty, madness, poignancy and nihilism.
blue velvet: one of the best movies ever made.
the breakfast club: everything that was good and bad about the 80s wrapped up in a neat rites of passage tale.
split second: 'we need guns. Big f*&%ing guns'. Worth it just for that line from Rutger Hauer.
The Hitcher: Rutger Hauer!
And I missed out Diva (just brilliant with 80s 'chic') and The Big Blue (free diving, rivalry, monomania, commitment and Jean-Marc Barr, Jean Reno, and Rosanna Arquette)
+1 to jon1973's 'the station agent'. Very good.
and +1 to gusamc's Dark Star. And of course 'silent running' (cute 'droids', calm footage, meaningful story)
+1 Meek's Cutoff or Lantana. Thought Silver Linings Playbook was crap. Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (not sure in spelling) is good. Danish film The Hunt is also excellent.
District 13 is on Netflix now. Not much plot to speak of but far and away the best action film I've ever seen. First time I saw it I went straight back to the beginning and watched it again!
It's been mentioned but if you haven't seen the lives of others then you really must. An astounding film, the sort of film Hollywood couldn't comprehend let alone actually put into production.
Definitely add it to your list.
Internal Affairs (original) - Main characters were well played
Grosse Point Blank - 80s music, violence and comedy
Immortal - Based on Enki Bilal comics, far from perfect but I like it's madness
Executive decision - Best Steven Seagal movie ever
Bubba Ho-Tep - Crazy characters and plot
To kill a Mockingbird.
You're there in the deep South in the summer.
triffic stuff!
La Haine.
vanishing point
The Twilight Samuri. The lead character- all men should strive to have his fortitude.
Dredd.
Amelie.
Dr. Strangelove, a perfect film. Peter Sellers is amazing, as is Slim Pickens.
Another Earth, the trailer doent give the movie justice, a beautiful movie
Sightseers, dark and funny
"He's not a person he's a Daily Mail reader" 😯
+2 for office space.
My favourite film ever. Very funny, if you do or have worked in an office.
Plus, great soundtrack imo. (i like rap)
Bad Taste
Braindead
Fish Story - best "world is about to end plot" ever and I also loved the tune that the film is based around. The old guy in the record store had me in stitches as he berates the two youngsters. The film is pure indy art with no dialogue wasted, brilliant acting and vinyl...what more could you want?
Another Earth - tick to buy
Is Bad taste still available?? I saw that in the early 90's!
You might appreciate this homemade clip:
Slightly offbeat
Delicatessen - Post-apocalyptic food weirdness - highly original.
Man bites dog - Serial killer documentary of sorts - dark and amusing.
Brazil - Future/retro weirdness - Terry Gilliam at his best.
The angels share - a good feel good ken loach movie.
I'm going to go with...
A scanner darkly
Moon
The fountain (Darren aronofsky one)
Dr. Strangelove
Yeah, for the reasons he gave above.
+1 for the Station Agent
+1 for Sightseer
Headhunter
City of God
Twin Town - very funny comedy about a family in Swansea
McCullin - moving and stark documentary of a war photojournalist
The Big Lebowski
If your into martial arts films watch Ong Bak, best fight film ever!
+3 for 12 Angry Men
Rear Window
Dead Man's Shoes
The Longest Day
Elling (subtitles)
Love, Honour and Obey
two side splittingly funny dark comedies that will help you to see things as they are instead of how you think they should be..
Oh, and plus 1 for La Haine for the same reason..
About to watch "The Imposter" on C4+1, which is apparently excellent.
Gattaca. A cracking film about a future predetermined by your genetics. Well worth watching.
Bad day at black rock . Great story well acted and well paced.
Intermission. Funny , unusual , well acted .
In Bruges . Great story , well acted , believable , black comedy genius .
Downfall. Superb German film about the last days in the furhebunker
utterly brilliant.
Good night and good luck. Recentish film shot in black and white and set in the era of McCarthy. Quite unusual.
If you ain't seen Apocalypto, then watch it.
Scott Pilgrim vs the World. VERY marmite, but never seen another film quite like it.
Dogma. Work of genius. Smart, funny, and best cinematic take on the nonsense of religion IMHO.
Valhalla Rising. Weird and violent. Bit of a mess in some ways but also beautiful and mesmerising.
Near Dark. Best vampire film ever.
+1 for Trollhunter.
Delicatessen. One of the best sex scenes in a film ever!
i still have bad taste on vhs, but nothing to play it on.
Great film.
Dead Man.
Johnny Depp in B&W weirdness. Also features Iggy Pop as a cross-dressing erm, "pioneer".
Old Boy. Messes with your mind, and has one of the most interesting items of cuisine you are likely to see eaten on film!
So I watched Primer - enjoyed it, makes you think!
Keep the suggestions coming though, as I said seen about half of them, but the ones I've seen are good so I'm assuming the other suggestions are good too 🙂
Hopefully others are getting some good info from this thread too - STW is on form here I think.
Th two I forgot to post before
The life of David Gale. Involving and thought provoking.
The Reader. Naughty in places and with an interesting turn of events
+1 for Bubbah Ho Tep, great film, crazy and really well acted. Weekend at Bernies, because trying to make a dead man look alive is comedy gold. Merentau, great martial arts flick by the director of the raid and starring the same guy. The penitentiary series, insane blacksploitation version of rocky, set in a prison, with a bad ass funk soundtrack, Mr T in the second movie and a protagonist called two sweet gordone......and I haven't just made it up, it's actually real and insane 😛
The Longships
Scum. Brilliant UK film-making.
Have Downfall to watch (above recommendation) I really hope it doesn't disappoint.
Dog Soldiers - you've probably seen it though.
Serious film: Once were warriors
Comedy film: Hotrod
Both brilliant in there own way...
Diva - brilliant film about an opera obsessed bike messenger, corrupt cops, prostitution, Taiwanese music pirates, cute shoplifters, and odd philosophy.
City Of Lost Children - A scientist in a surrealist society kidnaps children to steal their dreams, hoping they'll slow his ageing process.
Koyaanisqatsi/Powaqqatsi - two of a three-film series, about human expansion and destruction of the environment.
There's no dialogue, both films are long sequences in slo-mo, normal speed, speeded up, over music by Philip Glass.
Mesmerising, and utterly wonderful.
Zat?ichi (2003 film) or the TV series ...
After the Rain by Akira Kurosawa.
+1 for Diva - total brilliance and off-the-wallness....also Betty Blue, by the same director.
3 Colours Blue/White/Red (3 films) by Polish director Kieslowski - musing on the interconnectedness of things with amazing cinematography and dreamy music - not to mention sharp story lines, set in France/Poland/Switzerland.
Just seen Easy Money (Swedish thriller involving drug gangs etc which seems very real and takes it to the max - description of 'Nordic Noir' underplays its impact), and Looking for Hortense, which is very sharply observed 'typical' screwed up French family drama/ subtle comedy which knocks all of what comes out of the US and most of what comes out of the UK back into 1975.
Sorry, not read all the thread but:
A Prophet - One of the best foreign films I have seen in the last few years, incredible.
Margin Call - A take on the 2008 crash, not sure how accurate it is but a great script and cast.
And of course Bubba Ho Tep, if you have not seen this you really haven't seen the best Elvis/Zombie mash up film ever!
Lars and the real girl,
Animal Kingdom,
Balibo.
