New (old) house, old windows! In fact less windows so much as portals to the '60s....

Who's good? Who to avoid?

Top tips?

I've just used CR Windows for a conservatory - great price and friendly and professional fitters so I can't complain.

We have used CR Windows for a composite front door - very good. We also used Price Glass (G Road) to install some french doors and replacement back doors - also very good, and very reasonable. Get quotes from both!

Cheers for the recommendations!

Any more for any more? Anyone to avoid would be welcome too.

Urban Windows did mine. They were conspicuously cheap and did a neat job. I suspect the price is reflected in quality of locking etc. to some extent.

So is that a recommendation or an avoid? Or a qualified recommendation in that you get what you pay for?

Qualified recommendation in that you get what you pay for I think. There's nothing wrong with them and nothing has failed. The handles and locks just feel a bit vague.

We used CR Windows for UPVC sliding sash replacements. Can't complain about the quality, but I don't think CR actually made them. I had to get them to finish the outside properly - the fitters we going to leave a gap under the sill, so I go them to put a filler strip in.

No complaints though.

An alternative if you want to DIY is 'Trade Windows':

I'd drop in and see them and they might have a fitter they could recommend if you don't want to DIY.

Aaron glass, one man band (so hasn't got all the extra costs of salesmen flash offices etc) who has been around for years and is very fastidious in his work and works off recommendations.

Interesting, any particular reason you thought that? Was in their showroom speaking to them at the weekend and they claim to make all their own windows to order. How long have you had them in? Their sliding sashes seem like the best windows we've seen thus far (to go in a victorian terrace).

Had upvc sashes done by price glass. Fitted well, but need to watch the cosmetic finish ie woodwork and painting. Agree in advance exactly what the state of decoration will be. One unit has blown a year and a half later. Made in Wales by a factory, waited 2 months for replacement so far...

Hmm doesn't sound brilliant. They are replacing it at least though? Guess it remains to be seen when they actually do...

I used Price for one of our windows. Was OK. They gave me a few extra fittings and the like to get it installed. Also had some Glass from Diamond Cut Glass in Gloucester which has failed after a few months. They are saying their units are not fully UV resistant, which seems a bit weird for a window. Still refusing to a honour a warranty claim at the moment.

I was told by CR Windows that they didn't make them up themselves, but we're going back at least 6 years, so they may now make them up themselves.

I don't live there now, so I've no idea on their longevity.

As a side note, we've just had some windows replaced by a company who don't make good the plaster work - they just slap a filler strip on the inside, so watch out for this. I was fitting internal insulation so not an issue for me.

We have gone with Crystal Clear as they were the most competitive. They are located near Brislington.

If its sliding sash youre after in upvc, many smaller outfits buy them in from Quickslide. You can deal direct at www.quickslide.co.uk. Not very local though. Mine have been in about a decade and are going strong.

IA - they say they'll replace it but are blaming the factory for the delays....theyVe said the factory come and replace direct. They rely on local word of mouth and reputation, and with the number of houses round where they're based needing sash refurb and replacement I guess they're minded to act?
