Hi,
I've got Win XP running on Virtual Box on a fairly low powered PC so I am looking for a decent (free) AV app that just does on demand scanning and not bothered about in-memory scanning.

Cheers

MSE

Though how do you mean XP running on Virtual Box? What's VB running on? Does the VB XP have outside world connectivity?

Not much wrong with Avast Free, but I gather all the cool kids are using Microsoft Security Essentials these days.

TBH, I'd suggest having on-demand scanning and dropping the scheduled scans. Otherwise, what you've got there is a false sense of security.

If all you want to do is run an occasional scan with minimal overheads and no active protection, your best bet is probably just to use an online scanner. ESET is very good.

I've got a Netbook running Ubuntu and occasionlly I need to run Windows programs using Virtual Box. I don't want to slow it down with a resident scanner. And yes VB does connectivity to the outside world.

Will see if MSET is compatible with Win XP.

I know VB does - the question is, do you need to give connectivity to XP if you're only using it to run Windows programs you can't on Ubuntu (most net stuff people do works fine on Ubuntu).

Not that MSE running active protection is going to slow it down significantly - I have MSE running on an old PC with XP which is less powerful than a standard netbook, and it's not really noticeable except on startup. Get around that by saving state when you close your VM rather than shutting down the OS.
