I've currently got an iPhone 5S which is generally fine for my needs although it's getting a bit long in the tooth. What might push me to get something new though is that it's not supported for wifi calling on O2 - the signal is abysmal in the house and it's really annoying having folk hang up cos they can't hear what I'm saying!

- I like the smaller size of the 5S

- I would rather have a 3.5mm jack (apple really p****** me off getting rid of that

- I'm quite tied into apple stuff (apple tv, iCloud photo albums to share pics with family, iTunes library etc...)

- I'd rather not pay much more than £500 - £1k on a phone seems nuts...

The above is making me think just to buy an SE but that's a pretty old handset itself. One plus 5T seems to tick a lot of boxes but they're massive!

Anybody care to contribute to my pot of indecision?

A normal-sized 6S? It's 2 generations beyond your 5S (that's that I've got too).

If you can cope with a switch to android (I'm not sure I can), then the Samsung Galaxy S7 was on my radar as being small, headphone jacked and a good camera.

There does seem to be a massive gap in the market here. The only decent one (in theory) I could find at a reasonable price was a sony and they have always been very fragile IME. I had an S5 mini which was pretty good but that's a bit old now and they haven't done more recent mini versions. I think there was talk of an s8 mini, don't know if that came to anything. Samsung interface is a bit odd as well. In the end I just went for a bigger phone and its been fine. Loads more choice and much, much better value for money once you take the size restriction away. If you look at the smaller end of the current massive phones they aren't actually that bad.

On a separate note, if you decide to get a chinese special (which I think I might do), you need to make sure it's a) a Global edition and b) supports 4G: FDD-LTE Band 20 for it to get 4G on O2.

Still very happy with my SE. If you like the 5S form factor, it's just the same but with with 6S hardware - A9 chip, 2GB RAM, etc - only with fewer pixels to push around the screen so it feels even snappier. Hardly ever feels like I'm waiting on the phone to do something.

There's always rumours about new stuff but nothing that recent or credible. It's still working fine as their budget/small option and much as I'd love a new design small & cheap phone with better performance I can't really see it happening.

John Lewis and others are doing the 32GB for £299 or 128GB for £399 (£50 off the Apple price). If mine was lost or stolen I'd buy another.

I have an A3 as well, I quite like it though it will be bigger than your iPhone. It was the best compromise I could find when looking at Christmas.

I have an SE and it's fine and I am a fairly heavy user. There is enough newer features to make the jump worth it.

Macworld.co.uk = 99% clickbait guesswork.

Sony Xperia, latest compact one. XA? Great phone, smaller and waterproof too.

And not Apple.

oh i realise there's always never ending rumours about Apple. And there is always a new better phone on the horizon. The SE prices are static (my daughter bought one from JL at the same price as quoted above last july). That implies to me any new release isn't imminent.

To me a phone is a phone .I've got an iPhone 5s from work, and some vodafone thing. I use the vodafone one - the iphone sits in my work bag gradually decharging until i remember.

SE is still available to buy new from Apple. So not quite dead yet!

Seems very likely they'll do an SE refresh at some point soon as it has proven to be surprisingly popular. I'm still happy with my current SE though, good battery life and runs everything fine.

To me a phone is a phone

I reckon actual phone functionality probably makes up about 2% of my time "on the phone".

+1 for a Sony if you can cope with leaving Apple world - it's your own fault you're getting recommendations for something better than an Apple given you didn't specify that in your thread title and I only came on here to recommend a Sony! Haven't had problems with fragility here - OK so I bust my last one, but I dropped that off the roof 😳

Plus if battery is crap, it's eligible for the £25 battery replacement from Apple if needed.

I'm not keen on ever larger phones so went for a Sony Experia XA1 which was also had the benefit of being cheap. My daughter has one of the Samsung Galaxy S8's and that's also about the same size although quite a lot more expensive.

I've got an S7 (normal, not the fragile edge version).

Reasonable size.  Waterproof.  Amazing camera.  Still cutting edge.  SD card slot.  £300 refurbed £400 new.
