I used to have an M3 Advanced, but we can't find it now.

It worked

Now illegal, to import, advertise or sell in the UK, based around the ruling that they bypass Nintendo's security. The court ruling said "The court affirmed that game copiers first circumvent Nintendo's security systems before any non-infringing application can be played on Nintendo's hand-held products". That said and assuming your outside of the UK and in a country were the cards are not illegal I know that Gamedata and M3 are reliable.

Yet still illegal. Home taping is killing music, don't you know.

The youngster has had a M3 Real card for his DS for a couple of years - performed faultlessly

I've looked into these quite a bit, purely for research purposes obviously. I bought a (genuine) R4 card years ago and it's served me well, though of course I only ever used it for homebrew projects and I've now removed it and disposed of it due to the ban.

Should legislation change in the future, the best card to get would be the Acekard. But of course, I can't recommend that you get one, because that would be Bad.
