I bought one of these (Sony XB12)

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/1974850

The sound was really rubbish. 'XB' apparently stands for Extra Bass, god knows what the 'normal bass' version would be like cos there weren't none there. It went back.

I realise that I'm not going to get Hi-Fi, but surely something that sounds reasonable decent for about £50 is possible?

Does it have to be waterproof? Can you not just keep it at arms length while you're sipping your mojito in your infinity pool?

We've got a couple of Sony SRX-11s and the sound from those is great

JBL Flip is pretty good. Though looks like they are now a bit more than £50, unless you can find one on offer.

A little bit more money, but I'm very happy with our JBL flip 4 (I listened to quite a few before buying it).

Just noticed that they're on offer for £70 at Richer Sounds:

@CraigW snap!

Not sure how waterproof IPX7 is but I'm really impressed with my Anker Soundcore 2.

I treated myself to a Bose Soundlink after seeing one filling a large barn with music. It's double your budget, but I don't know how it gets that range of base and treble out of such a small package.

Was using it in the garden yesterday, put it in my back pocket whilst carrying tools back to the house and it sounded like overdrive as it was making the denim vibrate.

The only downside, is you need the Bose app, but once installed it just sits hidden in your phone and works like any other Bluetooth device.

Not sure how waterproof but for £20 lava Brightsounds gets played all day at work and can be used as a light if you camp, much more reliable than the JBL flip 3 and sound quality not too far off it

I can't recommend the Tribit Maxsound plus highly enough, it's got incredible sound, easily as good as my father in laws Bose Soundlink mini and better than jbl flip, but also waterproof ip67 rated and cheap as chips, what's not to like? I auditioned a tonne of different units under 100 quid and the Tribit speakers are hard to beat. The Tribit stormbox is also brilliant, I found it hard to choose between the two, pairable too, for an even bigger sound. Warranty is long too, 18 months I think, plus 6 months extra if you register with them.

The Soundlink Micro?

https://www.bose.co.uk/en_gb/products/speakers/portable_speakers/soundlink-micro.html#v=soundlink_micro_bright_orange

I can’t recommend the Tribit Maxsound plus highly enough

I was very tempted with one of these, but no speakerphone ability unfortunately.

I've got the Soundcore Motion B which looks near-identical to the one linked above. Hi-fi it isn't, but it's surprisingly good for its size. You can buy two and bluetooth-link them together to make a stereo pair too.
