like to buy wifey a few CDs for christmas, generally get her stuff she has'nt heard before, but this year i seem to be a bit stuck.
shes got quite broad taste, but if i were to narrow it down its more the acoustic folky sound (seth lakeman, bit of imagined village etc), to a bit of lighter female vocal jazz (melody gardot), to mainstream pap like the waterboys.
at the moment the only cd on her player is the ratpack christmas cd.
i have a similar tradition.
bought the GF this.
as is tradition she'll probably hate it ๐
The John Butler Trio is good on the folky acoustic side. I've been getting in to them recently.

Chailo Sim - beautiful male vocal folky stuff, summery and thought provoking.
Maz Totterdal - quite poppy but still folky acoustic stuff. Happy singalong, get in yer head kinda stuff.
First Aid Kit - brilliant Swedish duo. Really lovely. Summery again.
Ben Howard - you probably know Ben Howard. Like a less smackable version of Blunt et al.
What about Cinematic Orchestra;
That's on the album Ma Fleur.
Actually I might buy a Gregory Porter album after listening to flip's suggestion.
Beth Orton?
The Moulettes (great folk stuff)
Paloma Faith
Alice Russell
Everyone likes a bit of Caribou or Four Tet.
Joan As Policewoman
Feist
Rocky Votolato
John Butler Trio, I remember them, hmm who else is folky...Newton Faulker, Lumineers
First Aid Kit. Excellent sister duo from Sweden with remarkable voices.
If she likes REM she *may* appreciate this*.
*but probably not. ๐

Liz Green - O Devotion
Like a French twenties torch singer. But from Manchester ๐
Peter Broderick - Home
The kind of folk music you put on after a bottle of red wine and a profound need for meloncholia.
Fokey?
Try a Leeds band called Ellen and the Escapades. I have become uttely obsessed with Ellen's voice - it's amazing.
They have an album out and a couple of EPs. There's a few things on their youtube channel, including an enchanting version of R Keyy's 'The Greatest'
Rachel
Howard Elliot Payne (a bit country, in a scouse kind of way)
Slow Club
I Am Kloot
Johnny Flynn

My reccomendations are so good, Singletrack posted them twice.
cool, more, thanks. look fwrd to checking them out later.
current faves though are first aid kit and moulettes. the clips i've heard make me want to fire up my proper stereo and sit in an armchair to listen. would think the moulettes would be a good live gig to go to as well.
Maybe some Gillian Welsh
Alt J FTW.
Just stumbled across this , via Kid Koala, my wife loves it.

+1 for first aid kit. Their latest CD is called the lion's roar. It's brilliant. Amazing vocals, melodies and lyrics. Have bought it for and played it to a number of people and so far everyone loves them.
Frank Turner
Bronze Radio Return:
Brilliant live ๐
I was about to suggest Frank Turner, Ben Howard is also ace, how about The Villagers?
or Broken Bells?
As I'm listening to Cerys Matthews' Christmas album, and I saw her on Thursday, I'll suggest her, both as a solo artist, and fronting Catatonia, and another delightful Welsh band, Paper Aeroplanes.
Villagers are a really good suggestion, and also Laura Marling, in case no-one's suggested her.
Just ordered Ellen and the escapades' cd.
Thanks for the tip allthegear! Can't wait to get it now ๐
How about nice bit of Slayer or Napalm death ?
Half Man Half Biscuit might go down well, too... ๐
I love these threads!
Just ordered the Tunng BBC CD.
I went to see a local singer songwriter last week at the Colston Hall in Bristol. Jane Taylor. Very very impressed.
