like to buy wifey a few CDs for christmas, generally get her stuff she has'nt heard before, but this year i seem to be a bit stuck.

shes got quite broad taste, but if i were to narrow it down its more the acoustic folky sound (seth lakeman, bit of imagined village etc), to a bit of lighter female vocal jazz (melody gardot), to mainstream pap like the waterboys.

at the moment the only cd on her player is the ratpack christmas cd.

The John Butler Trio is good on the folky acoustic side. I've been getting in to them recently.

Chailo Sim - beautiful male vocal folky stuff, summery and thought provoking.
Maz Totterdal - quite poppy but still folky acoustic stuff. Happy singalong, get in yer head kinda stuff.
First Aid Kit - brilliant Swedish duo. Really lovely. Summery again.
Ben Howard - you probably know Ben Howard. Like a less smackable version of Blunt et al.

Lol @ uselesshippy.

Two things i've loved in recent times are:

Liz Green - O Devotion
Like a French twenties torch singer. But from Manchester ๐Ÿ™‚

Peter Broderick - Home
The kind of folk music you put on after a bottle of red wine and a profound need for meloncholia.

Fokey?

Try a Leeds band called Ellen and the Escapades. I have become uttely obsessed with Ellen's voice - it's amazing.

They have an album out and a couple of EPs. There's a few things on their youtube channel, including an enchanting version of R Keyy's 'The Greatest'

Ambient acoustic - Other Lives. You can stream their album on soundcloud free before you buy: Tamer Animals

For some female vocals, maybe a bit of Oh Land: Spotify link (may or may not work)

cool, more, thanks. look fwrd to checking them out later.

current faves though are first aid kit and moulettes. the clips i've heard make me want to fire up my proper stereo and sit in an armchair to listen. would think the moulettes would be a good live gig to go to as well.

+1 for first aid kit. Their latest CD is called the lion's roar. It's brilliant. Amazing vocals, melodies and lyrics. Have bought it for and played it to a number of people and so far everyone loves them.

As I'm listening to Cerys Matthews' Christmas album, and I saw her on Thursday, I'll suggest her, both as a solo artist, and fronting Catatonia, and another delightful Welsh band, Paper Aeroplanes.
Villagers are a really good suggestion, and also Laura Marling, in case no-one's suggested her.

The first reply - Junior Kimborough is beyond cool but then so are most Mississippi hill country trance blues musicians.

For similar also try:
Robert Belfour
Charlie Caldwell
R L Burnside
T Model Ford
Jesse Mae Hemphill
Fred McDowell
