Saw this story today about Jonathan Conville's body being found. Glad his family can lay him to rest appropriately.

The photo of the rock pitch was an iconic picture in my youth. Can anyone remember the route - the rock bulge is the giveaway. I think it was either Raven Crag area in Langdale or Snowdonia.

Does anyone recognise the route?

I don't recognise the route, but I'm glad the family have a chance to bury / scatter his ashes as they see fit.

I'm grateful to the family, and the trust they established in his honour, as I had a great 3 days in the Cairngorms a few years ago on an introductory winter skills course.

Cheers,
Jamie

Done 2 of the courses when I was a student. A great legacy.

My first thought was one of the Glen Nevis crags, with the hill behind his head being the ridge up Stob Ban.

It does have the feeling of Scotland about it. Definitely not Langdale.

It is about a decade since I climbed in that glen, but might it be on Storm, as it was in most "best of" tick lists from that era which covered that grade?

Asking on UKC might get you a faster answer.

Not so sure, if it was Polldubh I think you'd see the river in the valley below and the rock doesn't quite look right to me.

The basalt trap in the bulge is quite distinctive isnt it? Hmmm.

The river would be in the line of trees (it is a tree lined river around there) and is on the correct side of the road. The river / road / hill layout fits quite well with an OS map of the area. I'm guessing on the route though by punting for a mid grade classic!

Definitely Polldubh.

I'll leave to people who've been there more often than me to pinpoint the route exactly.

I am not sure there is a road in the photo.

Big boulders at the base suggest a big face/mountain location.

All the features match up for me - the road is the straight line just underneath the river. The pic was taken on a buttress to the right of where the climber is in the pic I've posted. Boulders are there too!

Yep it's Polldubh with Mullach nan coirean in the background, oldbloke was right first time. I've convinced myself checking on google satellite view!

Which deepens the mystery (slightly) as there's nothing there in the Hard Rock routes list...

Can you tell I'm on a dull conference call...

Trying to work out which buttress it could be on. Damnation on Styx Buttress has an overlap like that in the article photo, but not sure you could get that photo from there.

Possibly something on Cavalry Crag?

Nothing that looks like it in Hard Rock. I've already checked...I thought the very top of Damnation on Styx, but is that too far to the right? Cavalry Crag Buttress seems to be the best-positioned in terms of height and aspect.

The pic is most likely taken either from the top, a ledge near the top, or a belay point.

That's sort of why I went for Storm in the first place, as it is on Cavalry Crag and has a bulge on it.
