Looking for something for me and my son to play with in our garden with lots of grass (quite shaggy, it's not Wimbledon here), gravel, and tarmac to drive around on.

Any recommendations??

Anything by Tamiya with high clearance - a dune buggy type thing.

They are quite quick though.

As with everything.... How much!?

If i were you I'd have one for your son and another one for yourself.. But then I have a few RC's of my own.

I bought a Maverick buggy / truck crossover from Modelsport for my (nearly) 5 year old, really impressed w/build quality. I liked the look of the Traxxas cars, as they are OK for use in the snow and they have a speed limiter for beginners (or children). They are c.£180 though.

No idea of cost at all.

What's the price range low end to high? Poss prepared to spend £100.

Would like it to last, so good quality important. Would be good if I can fix small problems with it too, don't want to have to bin it.

Tamiya Mad Bull, rear wheel drive, great on the rough stuff, great fun putting the back end out on a bend 😉

Not cheap mind.

I don't know much about the low end, but you will probably want a 1/10th or 1/16th Buggy or Monster Truck (all about ground clearance), Brushless Motor, RTR (Ready To Run).

With nearly all the RC stuff, you can buy replacement parts for when you break it.

As above, Modelsport are very good, as is there forum for RC questions.

2nd tamiya mad bull. Bought one a couple of xmas back for my lad. Really fun to build. Tough as boots and wonderfully quick. Wheelspins, powered up drifts and donuts are brilliant. Think the kit wad around 50quid. Next time though i'm going for a nitro powered traxxis.

damn, i just threw away my mad bull a couple of weeks ago :(. we're currently moving house so i was trying to get rid of stuff, and i thought it was going to be too old to buy spares for. it was damn good fun and relatively cheap 🙂

tamiya make great classic rc cars

check out ansmann madrat buggys and the macnum truck as well - basically copies of top end associated b4/t4 here. great fun and easy to get parts as well

Years back a group of friends decided to buy Mad Bull for xmas, we had 8 racing together ever other month, all over the country, great excuse to meet up, have a few beers & break each others cars 😉

It all got a bit silly, with all the hop up parts you could get for them, some of the group spent a fortune tuning them up. Funny thing was, the cars that used to win all the time were the standard cars without the bling motors and suspension 😉

Great fun.....

and get a lipo charger like this and lipo batteries like this (you'll need to put a tamiya connector on it) and it'll run for about half an hour on one charge 🙂 just be careful with lipo batteries though, you need to ensure you charge/store them properly as if mistreated can do some nasty damage!

my tamiya sonic fighter is awesome on my pump track. the eldest loves using it too. might have to get her her own one so we can race!

i`ve kept it for 20 years and finally i have returned to a house with a suitable garden

best christmas present i've ever got.

dont bother with one that ready to rock. for me half the fun is building it.

My 5yr old got a Tonka Ricochet for Xmas, £50 on Amazon at the minute, it's not pretending to be a "proper" RC but it is very good fun and my little lad is well suited with it, although I have had to test it on numerous occasions to see if it's working properly 😉 check YouTube to see it in action.

Jeez I've been thinking about one of these for years.

Is it daft to go for 1:18 (partly to economise) or should I go straight to 1:10?
