I don't get colds often, but when I do, I get the sore throat, then runny nose, then a mucus cough that usually results in a week of disrupted sleep. Same as everyone else I guess.

But then my cough improves enough to sleep properly but hangs around for 8-10 weeks, frequent coughing during the day, and god forbid I try and ride at all, I just end up having a coughing fit the whole way round.

I gave up biking in November as it was making my cough worse, and last week before Christmas was about to start night riding again, then over Christmas its all started again, so presumably just about to enter the coughing again.

Some people say you shouldn't blow your nose during a cold, and I spoke to a mate recently who blows his nose and also suffers from a prolonged cough afterwards.

I blow my nose fairly hard but don't block my nostrils and the blow is normally fairly 'productive' so I guess I'm not forcing mucus back into my sinuses, but who knows? I think I cough worse if I don't blow my nose, but maybe if I didn't blow it at all in the first place the cough wouldn't appear at all?

Anyone else suffer from a prolonged cough (or not) and if so, are you a 'blower' or a 'sniffer/wiper'?!

Just a thought . . . have you been tested for asthma? The prolonged cough could perhaps be caused by this. And it's possible for asthma to be triggered by a chest infection, etc.

(Not a medic, but my son used to have this type of asthma)

Blowing your nose is bad?

What utter guff.

I have a tendency to get lingering coughs after colds, with cough fits so bad that I once popped a rib!! ๐Ÿ˜• I've partly put it down to 20 years of passive smoking thanks to my father! ๐Ÿ˜ก
As soon as I start feeling the onset of gunge production I hit it hard with Colvonia's Catargh Relief, it has significantly reduced the severity of my coughs since I started using it. The other thing I do is try to reduce my dairy intake as I find it can make things worse!
I'm most definitely a blower, I never sniff since I find it forces the gunk back towards my lungs and causes me to cough more.

OP, I'd suggest blowing your nose and using Olbas oil as well as it does keep your head clear and let's you recover, take lots of vitamin C too ( can be loads of fruit or fruit juice, whatever you like or are happy eating/drinking), finally to ensure that the cold is really knocked for six you should also bunk off work and go on a singlespeeding trip to Afan next month... ๐Ÿ˜‰

There are studies that suggest that blowing your nose forcibly could potentially be bad for you.

Lots of very nice things, if done forcibly, could potentially be bad for you. Just find your own limits ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Thanks guys, Colvonia's and Olbas on the shopping list, having been on call over Christmas I've already been hitting the Orange Juice rather than the beer ๐Ÿ™‚

Afan SS'ing extremely unlikely as I can't get my callout covered Guy ๐Ÿ™ Plus the first year I went I had 'the cough' luckily ended up not sharing a room and nearly died during a coughing fit at the cafe halfway round W2!
