At my fathers school they would draw lines on your backside with chalk and then cane until it was beaten out!
Experienced kids would switch to wear grey flannels for that reason.

But of course now it not so required - kids these days are much better behaved and recognise and conform to the boundaries of society.

Seems to me that there were a number of "teachers" who should never have had access to children, far less allowed to gain pleasure from beating them.

Although I used to agree with you, I know know that it can mentally scar people for life. Not everyone has the same tolerance to negative thing happening to them, some have a fair lower coping reserve.

We had one PE teacher [doubled as a geography teacher for some reason] who caned someone every time, if no one did anything wrong, he'd close his eyes and point to a name on the register to choose his victim du jour

Corporal punishment was banned two years before I arrived at school.
However, some of the guys in the years above used to reminisce fondly about deliberately angering Miss Cullen (fit thirty-something French teacher) in order to make her bend them over her desk for a caning.
