Having been giving a very nice green oak beam, I am planning to fit it above one of our fire places.

Is it worth staining it or treating it as I guess its going to split when it starts to dry out, tbh I am tempted just to let it age as it is, untreated?

Also, its going to be screwed to a lintle in the wall, been told to use stainless steel screws/bolts as other metals might react with the tannin in the oak, is that correct?

Ta very much for any advice.

Yep thats correct with the stainless fittings..
It would be terrible to stain a fine piece of wood like that splitting would not be stopped by staining or treating any way, the splits add character I would leave it natural and just stare at it all day I love a good piece of Oak
