Carrots weren't orange until the 17thC ...It's to with celebrating William of Orange. Before the 16thC it was unknown to English speakers. Although I think the French word "oranges" is older...

Might have used saffron. the English word for an orange is from the French, "Pomme d'orange" so people who knew French might have used that, but yeah, lots of folk would have probs just said Red.

Red, or more to the point, dark and inky and headed towards black. Its less a comment on colour than it not being clear.
Wine dark is also mainly a facet of the translation, it's better written as wine faced but in all cases means, dark, baleful and stormy, think of it more like a wine induced rage, eg darkness of mood, than a comment on the colour distinctly

The other thing to bear in mind is red is the colour of blood, wrath and violence. Often when he refers to the wine dark sea its in relation to being smote by angry capricious gods (and its very hard to find much which isn't a result of the gods and their disagreements even when it's not explicit). So whilst it's not necessarily red in terms of colour the referencing of red conveys the sense of rage and anger of the various gods trying to strike down Odysseus et al.

Well everything which looks black isn't actually black, it's just a very dark shade of an actual colour. Same as things which look white are just a very bright shade of something else. Nothing you'd want to get near is either completely absorbant or reflective of visible light.

carrots haven’t always been orange - they are variously yellow, white or purple - orange ones are just our current favourite variety

The question is are flat pedals less suitable than cleats, are they more expensive than better specification cleats?
If the answer is yes to both those questions then yes, they're the best pedals for a gravel bike.

Yes because screw spending £100-200 on new pedals and shoes just because the bike has curly bars

It did back in the 80s when a fave office prank was to remove the numerical buttons from a desk-phone and replace them in calculator positions. Looks normal enough to confuse some people.
