Need to fit a small ladder towel rail with a 150w electric element for the MIL. Can I put a plug on it and just plug it in or do I need a fused spur? If the latter, can I just spur off an existing twin socket or do I need to do something else? I know I need to do whatever it is outside the cloakroom rather than in it which isn't an issue.
Clearly I'm not a sparkie but would like to do something for her without bankruptcy, fire or death 🙂

When I did it you have to supply the electricity externally no plug unless shaver in a bathroom. Then I had to put it on a RCD.

Professionally, i would recommend an external switched fused spur with a flex outlet near the towel rad to connect the flex up to.
As long as nothing else is spurred off the existing socket outlet, yes you can spur off the socket.
Nothing wrong with just plugging it in (external of the bathroom) as long as it has the appropriate fuse in the plug top.
That's perfect and what I thought. I can go through the wall the heater is on to take the cable outside the room so no connections in room required. With something like 150w, I can't understand why the need for a fused spur as it'll effectively be the same fuse rating as that in the fused spur. What is the rationale (apart from compliance) behind it please?
You say cloakroom? If the room doesnt have a bath or shower in it then a socket and plug top would be fine. Personally I'd use fused switched outlet instead
Does the distribution board have RCD protection, if not I'd use an RCD fused spur for extra safety.
Can't remember the exact wording for it but your towel rail will be classed as fixed equipment so slightly different regulations apply or used to.
I'm happy to be put right on this as it's been a few years since I last needed a regs book!
Yep cloakroom so loo and sink. I'll have a look at her existing RCD protection and if there's none, fit an RCD fused spur otherwise I might just plug the bugger in.
