The Vast Of Night

Just clicked out of curiosity. Wow. Haven’t been so charmed and engrossed by a film in many a year.

If you like

HG Wells
RAY Bradbury
STEVEN Spielberg
ROD Serling

Set in post-WW2 New Mexico.

Watch it. With the lights off. (Warning: It’s not in any way an epic/blockbuster type of thing. It’s more like a radio play told through few voices and some finely-crafted direction/camerawork. Directorial debuts like this don’t crop up often IME. I’m a fast fan.

Three characters in the tale are stand-out (great acting too) inasmuch as all three lives seem limited/shaped by external forces. Whether those forces are society at large, luck, or Machiavellian extraterrestrial mind/s. It’s never heavy though, and mostly sticks to B-Movie charm - but there is so much more going on. The talk is often machine-gun fast like of it’s period, so subtitles help!

It's on my watch list, just need to wait for the missus to be otherwise occupied.

‘Fay’ is quite brilliantLy portrayed. Especially funny at times as she just ups and runs everywhere. Reminds me of being similarly hyper as a teen. Anyhoo, little interview. Top acting chops.

Two’s company! It’s a good cuddle-upper. I since read they did C-19/distancing screenings of it in the US at select drive-in theatres. That must have been perfect given the tone of the film. Talking of HG Wells, Mrs Rider and I simultaneously noticed the easter-egg in the radio-station abbreviation. Then I geeked out as commercial radio stations west of the Mississippi should begin with K, not W. 😎 (with exceptions if established before the rules, so...)

Yep, watched it a while back. It won't be for everyone but I thought it was brilliant. Almost totally narrative driven. Fantastic retro vibe too.

The director is definitely going to be someone to look out for.

This kept popping up on my google news feed getting great reviews which maybe raised my expectations too high. It had me bored, completely under-whelmed and actually annoyed that I'd wasted my evening's viewing on it. It's a 10 minute short story you've seen/heard/read hundreds of times before, dragged out to film length but with a few nice cinematic touches and a well realised setting.

There's a bit of emperor's new clothes going on here in my opinion - maybe go into it not expecting much and you might enjoy it more than I did.

I thought this was great. Well written, well acted. Had a vibe of kids staying up past their bedtime and watching the Twilight Zone!

Might give that a try this evening, sounds exactly up my street. Though I'd nearly run out of stuff to watch on Prime too!

Have you seen '7500' yet? Not sci-fi but one of the best films I've seen in a while, and another film bankrolled by Amazon.

For balance, thought the script was poor. Some of the exposition was way too wordy and long - definitely needed some editing. Some of the long single shot camera work was good though.
