Extreme? Yes. Deserved? Yes

So you advocate the murder of those whose views you don't agree with?

Speaking of tolerance

Well, you're not, obviously... ๐Ÿ™„

If this was a family or, err, another religion, I bet the apologists would be bleating loudly in their defense. As usual.

Do please elaborate...

Jaffa Cake, anyone?

I'm full thanks Elf. Just had a lovely lamb shank. A wafer thin mint might be ok.

To save pages and pages of arguing, here it is.

There are two types of people.

<---- Religous people (varying degrees of lunacy)

Non-religous people (varying degrees of sanity) ---->

Let's all just get along ๐Ÿ˜€

Elf just hangs around here looking for arguments though doesn't he. Still nice that he buys the snacks too.

Have a look at the thread where some religious half-wits murdered a load of people. No shortage of apologists.

Not watched the Louis show yet, I'll enjoy being disgusted at the loons, but I'm pretty sure they haven't beheaded anyone.

Did anyone see the counter-picketer with a 'Tits or GTFO' placard?

Incredible.

This isn't going to come across properly on a forum but I'll say it anyway: while I'm no advocate of taking someone's life, I wouldn't shed a tear if someone did exactly that to the Phelps' (children exempted).

Education (I'm talking moral/ethical via open discussion/listening/qualifying) is what's missing in many circles these days - and that's the stance I would always favour.

However, is there a law or dictum that declares every human being's life as sacrosanct? If there is, it cannot be proved. And there are plenty of people who 'break' that rule anyway. Hence IMO if they push the bar one step too far, then they deserve everything they get.

EDIT: I'll have one of those digestives if you're offering any ... ๐Ÿ˜‰

So, you're now confusing those who seek to try to understand why certain events take place, and the rationale behind that, with 'apologists' now, are you?

I din't see any apologists for murder on that thread at all. I'm surprised that you did, tbh.

Far from wanting to wish harm on those at the Westboro Baptist Church, I think it would be a great deal more productive to try to understand the reasons and motivation for their hatred and zealotry. As Mr Theroux is doing.

That's my point - hence why I said:

I agree that's where the 'challenge' lies, howeve, IMO some people really are beyond reasoning.

I wouldn't shed tears either. They still wouldn't have deserved it IMO.

Yet you couldn't resist posting that on an 'internerd' forum'? ๐Ÿ˜†

Violence , in particular murderous violence is not the answer to such idiotic people. I am pretty certain that these people are not violent and I, fortunately, was brought up to treat people the same way they treat you.

Best way to respond to these kind of people:

On a serious note, I felt dirty watching towards the end. It was like having cameras in a mental institute and watching for my own interest like I'm at the zoo or something.

Not wishing to give too much away but apparently Theroux loses his calm, patient detachment at one point towards the end, which I think will make for interesting viewing.

Well, he didn't and it wasn't.
Very disappointing. Best thing for that lot would be to ignore them. They'd really hate that.

If this forum has taught me anything it's that, whilst Dez is right, we consistently fail to ignore attention whores.

It certainly would make a change from his usual technique of saying "gosh", swallowing and raising his eyebrows, the one trick pony ****.

The show is on now

I don't want to provoke Fred into moaning on about how he can't get a date with me

we all know you failed to MTFU and admit who you were when asked when you were actually in his company.

No you don't. You just accept what he said.

I've never met the fellow.

So, basically, he's a liar.

Back to the Phelps - a fine example of intelligent design, I thought...

lets face it, that family exists for one reason and one reason only, to give us something to shout at, if it wasn't for grandpa dearest and his crazy off the wall and misinterpreted remarks being taken as gospel by a bunch of easily led simpletons who happened to pass some exams and become the second biggest scum of the earth, lawyers, we wouldn't give a rats crap. They would just be "those people barred from the pub for being homophobic"

We all need a hate figure, they're the hate figures, trouble is they've also understood that the more people they piss off the more air time they get to spout their dumb ass opinions.

I did wonder what would happen to a member if they got cancer (did they mention that) I would presume by their reckoning they'd be ostrisised fromt he church?

From Louis Theroux's blog on the BBC site:

"What emerged to me was I was seeing a family that through its own tortured logic was involved in a long process of tearing itself apart, while denying at every stage what it was plainly doing. Many of their activities are deeply repellent and yet it is also possible to see the Westboro Baptist Church as human beings who, in a weird way, are victimising themselves along with all those they picket."

But he doesn't need to do anything else or anything different. His style is all about letting people expose themselves and the best way of getting their personalities across is not to dilute the screen with his own.

That's how I see it anyway and fwiw i think it's a very clever technique.

I've been enjoying his stuff for years - it's remarkable how he keeps his cool sometimes.

I remember the time he was spending a weekend with white supremacists and one of them decided to suspect he was Jewish. Quite chilling at the time and LT stuck to his style while being fairly intimidated.

In my fantasy world where DD is a big tough guy who takes no shit, I'd like to think I'd have done the same. However, in real life, I suspect I would have left it there and gone home to have a wee cry. ๐Ÿ™‚

You were at a forum ride at Holmbury Hill one time. I know you were there cos I later recognised you from a pic you posted on here. We'd actually stood just a couple of metres from each other.

It's ok; I know you were in such awe of me, you were unable to speak. It's a common occurrence.

I'll do you a signed pic next time, I know your a bit shy, but don't be frightened.

X

ohhhhkkkaaaaay. This on repeat NOW. I thought, shirley these guys aren't serious and the joke is on Louis?

I feel sorry for them, poor bastards are so deluded they are missing out on a normal everyday life, mixing in the World with OTHER people. They are so fixed on a way of thinking. It's just sad. It seems to me to be insular small-minded thinking taken to an extreme. Scared of something?

Watched it this evening too. Tbh, I found any of their logic and rationale just plain difficult to understand. I'd follow them for a few sentences, then they'd lose me. The ex-film-maker was a bit scary though ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

It's illogical. It's faith based. You cannot argue with someone who is utterly, blindy in thrall to a set of beliefs which puts them at odds with the rest of the race.

The most telling parts of that documentary were those in which members of the public enter into angry dialogue with the family. They invariably lose and walk off, red faced and frustrated. Our belief system ( I mean most ordinary STWers / humans, if such a group exists) relies on logic and hopefully a sense of fair play. Logic is an unmoveable object. Faith is an unstoppable force. Louis is a mere catalyst.

I didn't watch the show, but I would suggest that it often IS entirely logical. However that logic is often circular and derived from certain initial assertions that are impossible to disprove.

Just reading back.. I'm sure I have seen a Theroux where he does get pretty annoyed at someone, but I forget which one. It was quite moving, but it wasn't a patch on that BBC political guy going apesh*t, which was absolutely incredible.

Then I unreservedly retract my accusation.

I'm a little puzzled, however, why it was that after I announced myself and fell into a conversation with bullheart about his cancer before helping to organise the ride, you didn't make it plain who YOU were, so I could meet your need of hearing from my own mouth, the words that you now, post-ride, are demanding?

Sorry, not meaning to hijack the thread and all that.

depressing to see these people teaching so much hatred to those children and how the power of a cult can make people reject members of their own family.

IMHO anything that tells you what to think without question is a watered down version of this, pretty much like all religion.
