That's got to be a primer/treatment/blatant piss take.

Please, it would be brilliant if it was finished off with a mild steel hasp and staple on the drivers door, with mismatched self tappers 🙂

It’s some kind of etching primer so they can chrome it. Please.

And what is YouTube recommending me last night? Mr Bean interview with the writer, and then the sketch above. And only one person mentioned Mr Bean! Can't be a coincidence...noticed a similar correlation after commenting on a thread a few weeks ago!

That's giving me flashbacks to the 3 months of evenings and weekends I spent doing a full set of aprilia panels.

was getting worried there for a bit.... glad it's not a union jack roof

even though they made the interesting tedious as **** I think the gordon murray escort anti rust zinc prep is a better process.

I reckon their painter has the only COVID safe workplace in the country - 1 person in the booth, massive fan blowing air in and (sometimes) wearing a mask.

Really cheered me up

Love the combination of traditional colour alongside nutter mental build. Brilliant.

Jesus christ the roof. Oh My god, the roof. Worth the wait.

I've only got as far as the first coat of primer. Was this filmed 30 years ago?
Blowing dust off in the booth?
Degreasing with no gloves? Body oil going over the panels.
Heating with a paraffin space heater , that just makes everything damp.
All that hard work on building it and they can't take it to a modern paintshop?

Oh hell yes.

Now, does that effect work on a bike frame? 🤔🤔🤔

Totally agree with the colour choice, doesn't need a lairy scheme to get noticed. The original shell was white anyway so it's a nice nod to the car's past too. The assembly is going to take ages though, got to be so careful not to chip or scratch the paint now!

What was funny was the YouTube algorithm suggested Ep.1 afterwards, maybe it knows how long it's going to be to the next episode!

Nice to see a BL colour on it.

Not my cup of tea on the roof but I liked the subtle pinstripes.

I'm going for a 2022 finish.

I'm starting to worry that, after all these years of effort, Binky might turn out to be an absolute pig to drive 😬😬😬

I can see that the guys are obviously very capable racing engineers (particularly after the Budget Racement series) but still...

Odds of there NOT being a 20+ episode series on post-test drive Binky fettling? 😂

As a complete ignorant, what was wrong with the paint process? What would a 'better' place have done better?

Not doubting, just interested!

Blowing dust in the booth maximises the chance of debris in the air and in the paint.

And gas heaters generate moisture which can cause blooming

And the oil from your skin can react with paint and micro blister.

Tbf I'm no painter to me the biggest issues the dust.

Loved the episode, wasn’t entirely sure how a painting could go on for 30+minutes & be entertaining, but this Bad obsession, & really it’s silly to be surprised. What a fantastic finish & look!

It does look a bit like baby sick. Wonder if they will go with traditional mini wheels?

They've spent 20 minutes on a single bracket before, so 40 mins on painting the entire car is pretty short compared to normal stuff!

As above, projects like this are never really 'finished' but I think this one will be the most finished of all of them.

However, there's still at least 10 episodes left, easy 😀 - there's the interior re trim (2 episodes), the assembly (3 episodes), the suspension set up (1 episode) the engine start and basic tuning/gremlins (1 episode), the road testing/further set up (1 episode), the rolling road tuning (1 episode), and so on.

I'm going for a 2023 finish, to make it 10 years from start to 'completion'.

It does look a bit like baby sick. Wonder if they will go with traditional mini wheels?

They've already banded a set of 5" 13" steel rims to 7" so have the look of 10" steel rims, but bigger. This was back in ep1.

Wow that paint finish is amazing!

They might even have it finished before petrol is obsolete!

I liked the comment "of course we know it's going to end up wrapped around a tree". Takes a special sort of person to invest all that time in something, get it all perfect and exactly matching the insane image in their head, then take it out and thrash it. I know I couldn't do it.

Did anyone identify the make of that sound deadening material?
Brilliant as always.

I've used various different sound deadening products in a few different vehicles and I believe it's a huge waste of time and materials going to the lengths he has in the video. You'd get the same effect by covering a fraction of the panels. It didn't even show him do the roof but I imagine he did as it makes a massive difference.

Still though, satisfying to watch isn't it?

Hopefully next episode is the money shot. I've been watching it since I was living on a camping bed in my parents spare room.

There must be about £10k's worth of dynamat in there, it's not cheap stuff!

The tease of all the running gear/engine for the next episode though...

I thought the same... But then the lengths they went to with everything else, I'm not surprised.

I'm the nicest possible way, I suspect a touch of OCD...

Binky's budget is so high that they used actual dynamat to dynamat it, that's proper decadent. Butyl roof flashing tape for me. And yep, don't think there's any benefit to adding as much as they did but it was nice to watch. (it was funny, my mate was obsessively stripping soundproofing out of his wrx to shave some grams, while I was adding extra weight all over mine with mass loading and foam) Now I want to add a load of gold tape.

Can't believe they didn't rub the fuel tank back! All scratchy.

That XCP rustblocker is horrible stuff, but really satisfying with the squirty hose thing.
