We have a banister in our hallway that has been half varnished / half not. We also have a door in the hallway that has been varnished.

We are trying to tart up the hallway for a few year so don't want to sand the whole lot down.

Will Dulux' regular primer & undercoat work on the varnish, or do I need to get something a bit fancier like Cabot's Problem Solver primer?

We'll be painting it with Satinwood / Eggshell / Gloss afterwards.

Use Zinsser Cover Stain first, then undercoat as normal.

I use Zinsser for pretty much everything - it kills any stain or pigment in varnishes, and knots. It's not worth having anything else in my opinion.

For really high quality finishes, it benefits from a little thinning.

Thanks, quite cheap compared to the Dulux specialist stuff - Is it a primer type paint rather than a paint stripper?

It's a universal primer - it stops anything leaching through your top coat, even stain. You can also use it on plaster to stop water marks or damp residue soaking through emulsion.

Everyone should have a tin!
