What's the max size you can blow up compact camera pics to put on the wall with them still looking decent. Camera is LX3, 10Mp I believe, thinking landscapes. Anyone tried it?
OK Tin this what u do, find out the number of pixels your camera produces and calulate the size for say 300 pixels per inch;
Pixels DPI Size inches
3968 300 13.22666667
2232 300 7.44
Now do it in reverse with the size you want;
Size DPI Pixels
40 99.2 3968
22.49 99.2 2232
Now you can print out a sample at home at the above resolution to see what it will look like.
Thinking about resolution purely, for decent print quality it's wise to stick to 300dpi, maybe 240. We used to aim for 300 for our print work, and accepted a minimum of 240 if we had to
10MP = about 3648px wide x 2736px high (assuming 'normal' aspect ratios)
3648px /300dpi =12.16"
2736px /300dpi = 9.12"
3648px /240dpi = 15.2"
2736px /240dpi = 11.4"
So, 12 x 9" would be fine, 15 x 11" would be about passable, anything larger than that may end up looking jagged. Of course, careful use of Photoshop or similar can give you a tiny bit more leeway.
Edit: Are you talking to yourself up there?
If its gong to be a poster on the wall, it's unlikely that it will be viewed from less than a few feet so I'd go down to 150ppi
That's true - I hadn't thought about that...
Indeed, I got impatient and started gogglin.Edit: Are you talking to yourself up there?
Reckon I'll get out the tripod and try streching it to 150 then.
Back in the day, I used the 'Top Spec' 2mp camera for A3 wall prints. Looked ok, as long as you weren't too close to it.
