Two years ago, when I had Guillain Barré Syndrome, my bowels along with my body stopped working. Now I'm as well as I'm going to be (still can't feel my fingers or feet properly, balance is poor etc etc), but my bowels still don't work properly.

The first time I was hoisted from my bed in intensive care, I managed a fantastic joint burp and fart which amused me, but the burp tasted a bit eggy, which I'd never experienced before.

The next six months brought a phase of being either constipated or having diarrhoea, accompanied by some awful brown smelly vomit that was a bit poo like in itself (I think it was actually poo sick) and this happened every other day.

Anyway.

Two years on and I still feel a bit sicky every few days, but the poo thing is still going on, just over a longer period, I'm ok(ish) for a while, then I start getting the eggy taste in my mouth for a day or so,, followed by a few days of diarrhoea. Is this what IBS, sounds like, or is it a hang up from the GBS, I worked faultlessly in this department prior to my time in hospital.

I honestly don't know how to respond.

Have you tried changing your diet? Going gluten-free, dairy free for example.

I have nothing to say on this particular matter. But, a lot of my student colleagues seem to ask me about GBS, so I point them to your blog and they find it really beneficial to read. So thanks for writing it.

I've changed my diet, but to try and loose weight. I lost about four stone in hospital, but put about six back. I've knocked two and a bit back off. But I've not avoided gluten or anything.

Poo sick.

I salute you.

Possibly the most awful thing that's ever happened to me.

I never knew anyone read that. Thank you.

Could it be due to any medication that you're currently taking? Or indeed any fillers in them?

Have you tried either probiotic yoghurt or tablets?

ok,

Poo sick or faecal vomiting is quite unplesent, so sorry you had to experience that, generally if someone is vominting so much that nothing is left, things can start moving backwards. Nasty nasty business!

Eggy burps (assuming you're not eating lots of eggs). generally If I have an eggy burp or fart it is a sign of impending diahrroea, its a kind of gastric smell, which i always took to be things moving too fast through my GI system.

Not sure how GBS would affect GI system, its a funny one that, and can affect lots of parts of the body in strange ways. I'd suggest its worth seeing your GP and maybe being referred to a specialist. Not sure which speciality though, neurology? Gastro? maybe a dietician?

Good luck with t though, and try to keep the brown down!

What I should have said (darn brain fog)is try going lactose-free. ARLA Lactofree milk is most acceptable, they also do cheese and spread. Available from Sainsbury, Waitrose etc and should be alongside fresh milk.

is it not fresh bile that can be like that-- very unpleasant --sounds pretty grim, but surely intestinal matter can't come back into stomach and out can it ??

CG, I'm not sure about the lactose thing, not really familiar with all of that and I've always out this down to my illness, just interested in the mechanics of it all, but I shall investigate. I no longer take any meds as the amitryptylene had me like a zombie.

Meehaja. I'm pretty sure I need to visit my gp about this. Just not sure what they can do.

Rudebwoy. I'm not sure, thankfully, that's not happened in a while.
