Again my medical advice was that I should continue to cycle gently for my general health.

Most people who are not regular cyclists, would not consider a 30 mile cycle, gentle cycling.

I was getting flamed on here for spending time in a property 2 miles from my regular home, which reduced my contact with others.

How can cycling that distance from your home be considered acceptable? A similar car journey would be considered unacceptable. Why is it OK if you use another form of transport?

Its not a journey. a journey involves going somewhere to do something. We are alowed out of lockdown for our daily exercise. Thats what i was doing

Sounds like a really freaky accident OP, glad you're ok...

Have you checked brain function this morning?

Do bear in mind the real risks - accidents in the home from DIY, burns, falls, knife cuts, abuse etc far outweigh activity incidents. We do all need to do our bit and be careful, but let's not get all lathered up and ban any cycling through one duff cassette.

BS. Of course it was a journey. Why didn't you stay closer to home or use a turbo trainer?

I do not have a turbo. I never went more than 7 miles from home, we both have a medical need for mental health to spend time out of doors, we did not breach the guidance in any way. the route was carfully chosen to avoid contact with people.

Now - can you please link to any guidence I have breached please.

rember we live in a flat. NO garden.

This reminds me that people don’t understand risk. More people have accidents that more people are involved in doing. That does not make them higher risk necessarily.

It certainly prohibits travel to second property https://www.gov.uk/government/news/covid-19-essential-travel-guidance

TJ sounds like he’s taking every precaution, and staying local.

There’s a whole other thread for the “using two properties when you quite clearly could stay in one” issue.

You're correct it does.

Why is it prohibited?

You admitted you were trolling a bit in the first place, which is not helpful behaviour in the current situation.

I wouldn't complain about it now if I were you.

And for the record, I am happy for both you and TJ to carry on responsibly.

Stop then.

Surely the fact that I have admitted I was trolling, means any further attempts would be null and void, so in fact I have stopped.

A significant source of A+E admissions are due to alcohol, or alcohol related injuries. I assume you've all stopped drinking?

Healing vibes OP. Sounds like a bad one.

As in the last injury thread though, the aim at the moment is to reduce casualties, not to completely eliminate them.

It's unfortunate that you've had a bit of bad luck there, but unless you had neglected your bike mechanically, it's just one of those freak things.

Can you elaborate on how a cassette could disintegrate?

BS. Of course it was a journey.

Existence itself is a journey. Should we therefore cease to exist just incase it might go against the lockdown rules. 😱 makes you think.

It’s impossible to avoid a journey if you’re going outside to exercise. A journey would be a necessary part of getting out of and back in to the house.

OP was clearly injured by karma for using the phrase putting the power down.

I see nothing wrong with what TJ has done. I did 16 miles from my door last week without getting more than a few miles from my house. Saw a grand total of four people. From now on I will refer to daily exercise as a sojourn, quest, saunter or jaunt. The last thing I want is to cause a strain on the NHS by causing some of you angry dicks to have a blood pressure spike and die from impotent rage because somebody did something you interpreted to be wrong.

That'll probably cause the Puritan Stasi to get even more upset.  Nothing to rage about😂

A similar car journey is completely acceptable if it is for valid reasons (e.g. key worker commute). It's not acceptable just to go for a drive.

I hope you get better soon, OP. I think the main lesson for us all is checking and maintaining your bike regularly. Spontaneous failures do occur, but it is much more common to get creaks, wobbles or other warning signs before things go to pieces. The first thing everyone has to do before riding, at the bike club my kids attend, is the "M Check".

Enjoy your riding if you are out this weekend, everyone. It was nice yesterday, and it looks like the sun is going to be out again today.

Yep enjoy all. Exercise is such an important thing at the moment. Just remember to ensure your ride is for exercise only. No smiling or having fun as that would make it look like a hobby.

Heal up OP and no more putting the power down!

Nope, but I’m pretty sure it’s not a phrase you only use once

I wonder if anyone has ever picked the darts player Phil Taylor up, just so they could literally put The Power down.

I’m entirely willing to comply with the actual instructions From Scot Gov, but if I was trying to reduce the statistical likelihood of me needing A&E, I’d stop showering or using the stairs in my house

Best thing to do is 24/7 MTBing. That way you won’t be showering or using the stairs, and so will be statistically more saferer than the other you (wot takes showers and goes upstairs) 🧐

Most other days we have been out for a walk. On those cycle rides we would be in less contact with people.

I'm with TJ on this one. We alternate biking and walking. Social distancing is much easier to comply with on the bike. Indeed in terms of contact with others I would say the order is shopping, walking, biking.

Most people who are not regular cyclists, would not consider a 30 mile cycle, gentle cycling.

Surely gentle refers to the intensity not the duration?

Anyway I think I'm safe from cassette disintegration given my feeble power output and that 11 tooth is just for decoration.

I note that the elected police commissioner for North Yorkshire used her national TV platform this morning to say that cyclists, even lone ones, are causing a problem by making people in villages 'uneasy' as they roll through.

Even putting aside the ludicrous nature of that statement about riders who are following social distancing advice, the logical extension is that anyone who sees a cyclist, or runner, or walker, on their street, whether rural or urban, is entitled to tell them to bugger off because it's making them feel a bit weird.

Her curious prioritisation of people who live in chocolate box Dales villages has nothing to do with her previous history as a councillor for Upper Wharfedale, obviously.

Yes! And why were you in the smallest sprocket on your cassette on a climb eh????? People need to think more about their choice of gear ratio at this time.

Yes, I know there are no government guidelines on gear choice, but personally I wouldn't recommend straying away from the larger end of the cassette and definitely don't use the biggest sprocket in case you over-shift into the spokes. I've seen people riding in really ill-considered ratios and it does my head in etc. 😉

I think the lesson here is check your bike over before you ride, not like most of us haven't got time for a bit of preventative maintenance at the moment

Me to, some of the above criticism is more like bullying than fair comment.
Op as you were going up a hill before your acceleration I'm assuming you were in the small chainring ? Small/small is never good, slyly put it into the big ring like the pro's before launching your attack 👍

I have a small confession to make from last week, or was it the week before? I went out for a sub 60min local spin one early evening and sometimes I had brief moments where things felt slightly odd, but I carried on and didn't stop. I got home to find the rear thru axle was nothing like properly tightened (as in ~1cm of winding in still exposed), my guess is when my turbo belt snapped I unusually didn't fully tighten the axle when I took the bike off the turbo and re-fitted the rear wheel. 😮

Moral of the story... Check over your bike before heading off!

Have you lost your mind? Drink is all that's seeing the Great British Public™ through all this. If they sober up it will be carnage.

High fives Malvern Rider for soap dodging.

Don't cycle indoors?
