So two nights ago I thought I’d do my usual alotted 1 hour of exercise by having a leisurely hour out on my road bike. However two evenings ago on said ride, I was putting down some power to accelerate up a small hill when my cassette decided to disintegrate. Result was me over the bars , unconscious with road rash from hell and a helmet smashed into 3 pieces. Fortunately Someone saw it from their window and called an ambulance.
Long story short - ambulance came and as awesome as ever, they checked my vital signs which were all good and we decided it was safer for me to go home than to hospital at this time!
I now feel like a complete idiot for taking up their valuable time at the moment.
If you have Zwift , then for now please use it, as unexpected accidents do happen!
Good honest post
Point well made
May your recovery be as swift as your self awareness
You weren't in Malvern were you? Heal fast..
To be fair if you were putting down the same power on Zwift and had the same issue you’d probably still go out of the front door onto your head 😉 At least you wouldn’t have the road rash
As above, very honest if you to post that.
It is indeed a reminder that we all need to exhibit some common sense right now. That includes me.
Heal fast buddy.👍
cassette decided to disintegrate
Want to hear more about this !
I'm infallible and so is my cassette.
This is the reason they gave us for not allowing riding even on your own in the countryside. If you hurt yourself you will be looking for resources that are not there and if you end up in hospital it will be the worst place you could possibly choose to be.

It is not forbidden FFS!
Well, I stayed at home today in order to be safe and decided to dismantle some old fence panels that have been stacked against the side of the house for the past 12 months.
Top tip - don't stand on nails.
Thanks everyone, aside from a face like it’s from a slasher movie and bruised ribs I’m ok thanks.
Kimbers - the small cog decided to separate from the main body, which is what sent me into free fall. I haven’t investigated exactly why it separated yet though. Will have a thorough look in a few days.

Spekkie is in Spain iirc
Despite the roads being so quiet I narrowly avoided a nasty crash today when some clown in a white van opened the door in front of me, managed to swerve and miss him by inches.
How can a cassette disintegrate?
It is easier for them to put out a blanket ban on everything that try and decide on a case by case basis.
At the Big Bike Bash we have a simple NO FIRES rule. You are allowed an off ground BBQ but nothing else.
This makes no sense for the x% of people who know how to manage and take care of fires but saves the 100-x% of people who will burn the forest down from doing that.
The reason we do it is so we don't need to check every fire to see if it is manned by a ****, we just kill them all. Makes our life easier, everyone can understand and keeps discussions short and beer time long.
I guess the blanket rules on Gnarr are much the same. I was chatting from a distance to a policeman while on a ride today. He had pulled a car of 4 over to ask what they were doing so I stopped to watch (I mean keep a safe distance while the incident was dealt with). The only thing he asked was why I wasn't wearing a helmet. I explained that not having a helmet prevented me trying anything brave. He thought that was actually quite a good idea. We then smiled and went our separate ways
Interested in the cassette failure - we should all know what to check on our bikes.
I’ve heard of it happening on Vitus bikes.
I think they call it cog roamer vitus or something
There's a lot of Lewis Hamiltons [well, more like Sebastian Vettels really] out there on the roads right now, using the empty roads like a race track. Nearly got run over crossing the road in central Manchester today.
I’ll keep you updated on here with the cassette. All I can say is that the guy who saw it happen also is a very keen cyclist and used to work at Pearce Cycles in Ludlow where I’m from. He dropped my bike back too me and said that the smallest cog in the cassette was separated from the rest of the block. This ties in with what i remember. until he said that I thought that my chain had come off the front , so all sort of ties in.
At the moment I can’t bend down and can’t contemplate examining my bike yet. Hoping to have a look tomorrow/Sunday though.

Ditto here in Kent. The roads are like the wild west at the moment.
Most people are still driving ok but some are seriously going Mad Max. Even more than usual.
Top tip –
don’t stand on nailswear boots with a steel shank.
I went out on Wednesday evening for a quick spin on the single speed on some local mellow singletrack. Starts with a nice easy road climb, farm track then on to said singletrack. Anyway, gets to the stone slab stream crossing, clip my bars on the wire fence which pitched me in to the stream, hit my chin on the bridge and took a fair bit of skin off my forearm.
I was convinced for about 30 seconds I’d broken my arm as had a really sizeable heamatoma on it and was waiting for the adrenaline to wear off and the pain to kick in. Anyway, after much swearing I washed my arm down, wrapped it in a buff and gingerly pedalled home. Needless to say I kept saying to myself that I really don’t want to go to hospital just now and gave myself a bit of a talking to when I got home. Think I’ll take it even steadier for now.
Dedicated geologist there I see, up close and personal with the ground. Accidents do actually happen and there will be dedicated (in more than one sense) NHS staff to help you. Nobody broke any rules here but it's a good reminder to check all safety critical components before setting out and dial back our awesome power a touch.
Heal quickly. And, er, stay safe.
Yup - even on the bimble I went on I walked down a short rutted descent.
Ah,op....We need to know!
Was the cassette a shim or sram?
That way we can indulge our groupset prejudices! We must know this!
Haha - Shimano

TJ, just curious, what are your rides like at the minute? How far you travelling to do them an how far you going?
Just noticed you're somewhat defensive on the subject?
No far, no gnar, no gears. Singlespeed for the NHS guys!
Glad it wasn’t worse Geo! Take care out there folks.
Coincidentally a local cyclist ended up in hospital today with a collarbone broken in three places he has no idea how it happened, thanks to being a bit knocked unconscious. Not saying it can't happen on a local 1hr run but it took 45mins for the ambulance to get to him after he was found by a passing motorist.

Knew it! Wouldn't have happened if you'd gone sram.
Another lesson learned.😉

I can see this heading the same way as all the other topics on this subject now, we'll have all the usual arguments over what the guidelines are then Kelvin will turn up with his generic post about keeping it short 😂
They might as well all get merged into one mega argument now as they are basically all the same but with a different title 😉

You're not my real purity spiral, you cant tell me what to do.
The argument is simple though. Reduce your outdoor life to the absolute minimum..
Nearly 1k a day dying is difficult to argue against.
It's not really an argument tbf....
No argument here seosamh77.
But was the cassette manufactured in China 😁
I bet if the op checks, there will be a 5G mast near where he crashed.
Those masts get you every time with Shimano.
SRAM cassettes, however, are certified 5G compatible.
Shimano makes the airwaves come alive. In a bad way.
The Scottish press conference at lunchtime Friday specifically mentioned by a wise old man with a lecturn " Exercise does not mean doing your hobby , like mountain biking " I did an actual LOL at this , it was almost aimed at TJ ( no offence like ) and very nearly was delivered with vitriol and a touch of anger .
That cassette must have either cut through the freehub or the smallest cog (s) fell offf into the tiny gap between the fram and lockring , or you managed to bend one over. either you have track cyclist levels of power , or your cassette is made of cheese . Or the freehub ratchets failed at an inoppotune moment giving you launch control . germolene that road rash , oh and melolin dressings if its weeping , possibly the iodine version as you do not want a secondary infection

Yep well and soberly put, there’s plenty of time for fun after this....
As far as I’m aware, the “stay home” instruction is about reducing transmission, not reducing accidents.
To maintain some sense of perspective, have a look at the RoSPA stats for accidents in the home, then have a think about where the biggest additional load on the NHS is going to come from this bank holiday weekend.
I’m entirely willing to comply with the actual instructions From Scot Gov, but if I was trying to reduce the statistical likelihood of me needing A&E, I’d stop showering or using the stairs in my house, and definitely no gardening or DIY...
I'm pretty new to the forum but TJ seems to do a lot of cycling for someone who supposedly ****ed his back and was in dispute with his employers (the NHS no less) to be allowed to go on light duties
TJ, just curious, what are your rides like at the minute? How far you travelling to do them an how far you going?

I am not being defensive. I am frustrated that folk are over interpreting the advice and then attempting to put their opinion on me.
Since coming out of isolation ie in the last fortnight I have been out for a ride 5 times I think. all rides from home ie no travelling to ride!
Once to check the bike I need to commute to the hospital I work in works - 7 miles. Once to check how long my new commute will take - 13 mile round trip. Once out into East lothian - 30 miles. Once out to the ash lagoons in Musselburgh - 20 miles. Once out to queensferry - 30 miles.
all of them I chose the route carefully modifying my usual routes to minimise contact with people. NOne were anything remotely tricky that folk on here would recognise as mountainbiking. NOne were in breach of the guidence in any way.
Most other days we have been out for a walk. On those cycle rides we would be in less contact with people.
We have a real issue like many city dwellers with getting any meaningful exercise without coming into too much close contact with people. Our normal walking routes up the water of leith have far more people on them than they used to have.
My other half has been prescribed by her GP to get a minimum of hours aerobic exercise a day ( stress and depression caused by work) At first she was able to do this walking up the river but since lockdown she cannot due to the increased numbers on the river path ( walking fast means overtaking folk continually). Thus we have had to resort to walking on the roads or cycling avoiding the crowded mixed use paths.
While we were both in isolation ( she had symptoms) we didn't even leave the flat at all because it was early days of lockdown and the offices below our flat still had people in them thus it would have been wrong to step outside our flat door
None of what we have done is in breach of the guidence in any way.
Edit - plus two commutes to work - 13 mile round trips
As far as I’m aware, the “stay home” instruction is about reducing transmission, not reducing accidents.
There is nothing in any official guidelines asking us to not go out in order to reduce strain on the NHS through accidents. The OP has done nothing wrong, but common sense should tell us to be much more careful than normal to minimise risk.
Fwiw, from personal experience many years ago, standing on a nail results in a lot of medical excitement around infection and tetanus jabs.
Mehr - its a shoulder injury unaffected by bimble cycling. Again my medical advice was that I should continue to cycle gently for my general health. I haven't done anything like proper mountainbiking for a year now since the injury.
To be fair if you were putting down the same power on Zwift and had the same issue you’d probably still go out of the front door onto your head
Has physics got Corona virus and changed its laws?
Assuming like most sane people they are not using rollers for zwift
Actually thinking further the east lothian ride was before the lockdown
