Pixel owners - battery life last week or so?

Start off by saying mine's a 9, but will possibly affect other generations if it's firmware related.ย

Over the last week or so seem like the battery life has taken a step change. Battery saver is kicking in early evening (20%) when previously I'd be plugging it in a bedtime with probably 40%+ remaining. I don't think my usage is significantly different and battery health in the settings is showing good.ย

Anyone else had this, or just my phone? I know firmware updates have had such an effect on some phones in the past, possibly a thing here too.ย

I've a 9, the battery life seems OK, but last week (after the last update) it seemed to be reluctant to charge past 80%

I gave it a few reboots and it seems to have been OK since

In the last update they fixed the battery charging optimisation setting, which limits the battery to 80%.
If that is on, your phone will now (correctly) be charging up to 80% instead of 100%. It's under Settings > Battery > Battery health.

If not give it a reboot, as sometimes stuff gets stuck running in the background.

Mines a 7. Battery rarely lasts a full day but it does spend a lot of time streaming podcasts and the radio. I haven't noticed a particular change recently.

Please excuse my ignorance, but is charging past 80% considered detrimental to the battery? Mine's (9A) charging up to 100%.

My understanding is... fast charging isn't great for batteries (1), and (2) "full charge" cycles (ie to 100%) are what gradually degrades the battery life, and doing both together ain't good. IANABE though

To the OP, not much change (9a); but I have had that problem in the past. I believe it was a case of finding 'Digital Wellbeing' app in the app list, stop it, clear the cache, reboot a couple of times, and it should come good again.ย

Yeah, more battery being consumed since the update on Friday. I plug my phone in overnight and it slow charges to to 100%.

I have noticed a drop in battery charge happening quicker this week. I don't think I'm using the phone more, but I might be and just not realising.

Nope. 9a here. I've had the 80% charge limit set to "on" since I got it 3 or 4 months ago. No noticeable change in battery life recently. I find the battery life pretty good. Easily lasts a day to a day and a half when charging to 80%, and that's with quite heavy usage. You can easily override and allow 100% charging if you need to. In fact, it does it anyway every 10th full charge or so to calibrate the battery meter.

8a. Noticed this too. However, my Garmin Instinct 2 Solar thinks I climbed 42 flights of stairs yesterday. I maybe did 15-20, but no way 42...

Pixel 8a.

Not noticed any difference and I've been using it to stream music and running komoot for at least 2 hours a day the past week or more.ย

Charging only to 80%, too.

I had this on a 6a. Apparently they identified a battery problem and offered either money off a new phone/cash/new battery - unfortunately I've not had time to do either but a firmware update seems to have massively limited battery life as a result. I used to get to the end of the day and still have loads of battery life left but if you're on the phone, it drains rapidly now. Often have to charge it up throughout the day so I can have my doom scrolling time in an evening!

No issue on my 4a, but then it's probably not getting any firmware updates to affect this sort of thing anymore.

Regarding the 80% thing, my Samsung tablet recommended to only charge to 85% to improve battery longevity, so I have that set on there. Not on my phone though.

Regarding fast charging, on my 4a if you charge overnight and have an alarm set it will slow charge the battery to reach capacity for when the alarm goes off. Can't remember what it calls it now - charge optimisation or something.
Ah, it's called adaptive charging & can be found in battery>adaptive preferences.

I think the problem with 100% charging is that if your phone is on, it charges to 100% then stops. So the battery runs down a bit, then it starts charging up to 100% again. And repeat, which puts loads of cycles on your battery, which isn't good for longevity.ย

Not sure how the 80% thing helps though. Witchcraft?ย

I've checked all the battery settings, (adaptive is on, 100% charging) and done the Digital Wellbeing stop thing. Enough people above seem to have noticed similar to convince me it's a them problem not me, so after a couple of re-boots I'll see how it goes and if future firmware updates make any further improvements.ย

Thanks.ย

I have a 7a.ย  Every now and then the battery life crashes.ย  I've spotted a couple of times that a task is running in the background. Once it was something that was always listening, and displayed what song was playing (even though I hadn't asked for it). Just going through and turning off options and doing a restart has always fixed it.
