Heh,sorry! I was looking at Canon camera's the other night and got a wee bit more of an idea on their range! I would love to splash out on one but the thought of prices of lens and everything else throws a spanner in the works. This pic of the bee is amazing. Which lens was used for this?

Cheers! I use an old manual Tamron SP f/2.5 90mm macro with an adapter for my macro stuff. I don't see the need for autofocus for macro work, and it was either 50 quid for s/hand, or more than 10x that for a new Canon L-series macro. For the amount of macro work I do, I'm happy with it.
Nothing wrong with a 7D
Not at all, assuming you don't mind wishing you had spent that little bit more to get a 5D ๐
But seriously, the 7D has some plusses over the 5D when it comes to fast focussing. As I normally use a tripod and take photos of hills, this isn't an issue for me, and I'd rather the low noise and low light sensitivity. Horses for courses - they're certainly not both aimed at the same market, that's for sure.
And finally - liking the URBEX, Grum! Something very fascinating about derelict sites...

I have a 7D and a 5D mk I. On paper the 7D is a better camera but I just prefer full frame. Think I'm going to ditch the 7D as I just don't do that much sports or wildlife stuff.
Wow - Lots of great stuff here!
Jad - that Ben a'an shot is just great (a few pages back now- page 58)! One of my favourite places on earth. What time of the day did you have to get out of bed for that?

Well it looks like its doing a pretty decent job for the money! I fancy buying a good body but the thought of which (as my one and only)lens frightens me. I would hate to buy a decent body with a poor lens because of funds.. but this use of old, cheap manual lenses makes things look a bit more promising for me!
edit: does anyone know if there's adaptors to fit old Canon FD lenses onto A 5D body? Or would that be like putting a pair of deore hubs into an Indy Fab?!
Polarisandy.. that's a topper!

The trouble with the FD lenses is that they're about the only lens that needs mounting closer to the sensor on an EOS camera than the stock lenses. This is impossible due to the mirror (especially on full frame), as the adapter has to take up some positive space. You can get two types of adapters though. The first doesn't allow infinity focussing (this is what you lose when you mont the lens too far away - like an extension tube. It is however great for macro or closeup work.
The second type of adapter has a corrective lens in it to allow infinity focussing. But where the FD lens is presumably an L-series one (or you wouldn't be wasting your time trying to fit one to a 5D), the quality of the adapter's glass can be questionable to say the least, ruining the image.
Ironically, it's much easier to fit just about any other manufacturer's old lens to an EOS camera than it is an FD-series lens.
I'm afraid that if you go for a 5D, and certainly a 5DII, you'll be found out on lens quality if you don't buy very carefully. There are lots of old lenses that have the quality (pretty amazing when you compare the 6-8 MPx at best you can get out of a 35mm slide before all you're resolving is film grain), but there are also plenty that don't. As a rule, most of the Olympus OM-series are fine, but sometimes require a little CA correction in PP. The Tamron SP lenses are also surprisingly good, and you can find plenty of good M42-mount lenses. As said, old pro-level Nikon stuff is also good, but as these natively fit modern Nikon cameras, there's usually a premium.
Your other option, if you need AF and full metering, is to go for the mid-range primes, which whilst not 'L' build quality, they certainly have the image quality in most cases.
I think in full frame, the EOS platform wins hands down in terms of bodging old lenses. Nikon can obviously use their own-brand old lenses, but due to their design, just about every other lens would require an adapter like the FD lenses do on the Canon. Olympus are your other option for being able to use lots of old lenses, but they don't do a full frame sensor, which is a show-stopper for me.
My boy. No fancy camera. No special shutter speeds. Am I proud? You bet.
You have every right to be, the best kind of photos these IMO.
And that's why photos are such cool things. Anyone can take them without any special knowledge, artistic vision or creative flair, and so long as the subject evokes emotion (either in the photographer or a viewer), it's worked!
It's also occasionally frustrating to social photographers such as myself - years spent learning a skill are often ridden over roughshod by the reaction to Aunty Flo's snap of a bride (or a kid) on Facebook because of just that emotional connection...
Don't get me wrong - I see hundreds of images literally every day taken by pros and amateaurs alike which provoke a response in me (a good few on this thread too!). Anyway, I do love this thread, despite spending hours on photo forums full of pros, very keen amateurs whose cameras cost more than mine and true artists to boot. So do carry on please ๐
Ahh brilliant Zokes. Thanks a lot for that. I will keep this thread in mind when I need to refresh on that. I can only imagine how awkward these breech lock fittings would be when trying to fit them to anything else. You have just reminded me how different they are!
Its a shame as the lens quality is amazing. I was sifting through a crate full of pics I took on the A1 with these lenses i took about 10 years ago and the detail in the prints amazes me. This quality and compatibility would be nice to have on the 5 or 7D but if it means having to go for something else.. then so be it. Its quite a while away, though. So I suppose I need to look into what I want/need a bit more first.
Cheers again.
Nothing as breathtakingly beautiful as most things here.. but it's beautiful to me.
