I've currently got a Mac, and a NAS, which holds all my photos, but the NAS and iphoto doesn't really work very very well, very slow, and it's all a bit clunky.

what other options do I have, thinking of something like dropbox, and paying for quite a bit of storage, with the added bonus of easily collating all pictures from phones as well.

anyone else do this? does it work well?

Is flickr free? don't know why I didn't think of that before actually...

Can you use iPhoto to view your flickr stream?

Can you use iPhoto to view your flickr stream?

You can view photo sets in iPhoto '11 (9.4.2)

iPhoto > Preferences > Accounts > "plus button in bottom left" > Flickr > Add

Then just follow the authorisation instructions.

The photos need to be in sets, for some reason it doesn't seem to show the photostream.

I looked at a few photo sharing services when mobileme was shutdown. I chose Phanfare in the end: phanfare.com

Flickr is free for the first (a guess) 200 photos then there's a fee every 2 years of about £24 (another guess)

I've just got a pro account on Flickr. Costs a few quid a year ($22 for 2 years was it? Something like that. About £8 a year IIRC) which syncs directly with Aperture on my Mac, and I can upload direct from my phone if I like too.
Very simple, everyone can see them if I wish. 🙂

I use a raid drive, also on a PC so not sure about the whole iPhoto thing.

I can see the benefits of cloud storage though although you're exposed to the ongoing cost (how would you 'swap' to a cheaper provider in future?), not sure about the likes of photo sharing sites due to the long agreements and the potential of them doing a Facebook or Instagram and then possibly losing the copyright to my own photos.

Warton, what are you trying to do, backup your photos or make them available online? Or both?
For online sharing I use Flickr Pro. Lightroom 4 to manage & process my photos & to publish them to Flickr,Google+.

I backup to a separate internal disk & to an external one which is fast. Haven't bitten the bullet to do Crash Plan or other Cloud Backup.

I use dropbox as I like it the way it keeps a cloud copy and a local copy on both my PCs. I only have a free account limited to 18Gb so I only use it for the good pictures (It's more useful for documents). For everything else I have a network drive, a USB drive and big drive in the laptop. Still need to set the syncing up properly, though.

I use a combination of RAID drives in my desktop, a MAHOOSIVE NAS drive and a Microsoft Home Server rig with many, many TB of drives in it. I still need to sort out some off-site backups.

Lost everything not so very long ago - years worth of photographs, including some very decent commercially useful shots. Bit of an arse, but I did loose pretty much everything beyond 3 years old (from now). This made me very, very paranoid and careful!

Planning on using a pair of high capacity drives to back everything up and leave one at my folks at all times, switching them over after every decent photoshoot.

+1 for off site storage or some type of 'cloud' copy. Both have issues(effort or cost) but my hard drive went when I had my stuff stolen and would have been instantly wiped and sold on. Lost photos et al.

Every so often I just clone my hard drive onto a spare, which lives at my brother's place.

2 hard drives at home and one at work. If all your photos are in one physical location then it doesn't matter on how many drives they are on they are not backed up!

Currently building a home NAS - NAS4Free + RAIDZ1 + loads of 2TB disks.

Photos? Two free MS SkyDrive accounts (25GB each), plus I uploaded them at work (20Mb upload speed)

Started using Lightroom 4 for processing and organising.

Best shots go to Flickr Pro at full res (unlimited storage and uploads for $24 for two years is exceptionally good value, though I'm a bit worried about long-term viability of this strategy)

Everything backed up to external HDD, including all the dross which I've been too lazy to wipe from cards over the years - hopefully LR will discipline me a bit more!)
