Desire or Desire HD. It's the Hero, beefed up and less Jimmy Hill.

If you're an android fan, very hard to look past nexus S, or desire HD if you can put up with battery life and speaker (both crap).

Motorola defy, will probably work and cheaper than all these other options and survive some abuse

Nah Defy will be upgraded to 2.2

https://supportforums.motorola.com/community/manager/softwareupgrades

Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA)

DEFY MB525 (Europe) Upgrade to Android 2.2 planned for Q2 2011

I reckon this is one of the best value smart-phones on the market, even if you don't want a rugged phone

Don't forget, Nexus S does not have an SD card slot, and the screen isn't scratch resistant Gorilla glass. I was tempted with one but ended up with a Galaxy S. There's some really good support sites and custom ROMs. I don't miss the fact there is no LED flash for the camera as I find them less than useless for "night" pics anyway. As a handy P+S it's really good in the daytime though. Android is a great platform if you don't mind geeking it up a little!

I've got a custom ROM on my SGS which gets rid of lag, improves GPS acquisition and lock and generally opens up the phone a whole heap. I know Quadrant scores aren't the be-all-and-end-all but I've gone from standard Android 2.2 which gave me scores of 900, to the 2.2.1 Samsung firmwarw which gave me 1100, to the Darky's Gingerbread ROM v8.0 and scores of 1600, with no telco bloatware on it either.

Personally if you can, I'd wait. There's going to be a few dual core phones out early 2011. LG has one, Samsung is due to bring one out too. Combined with Android 2.3 Gingerbread on the horizon these will be superb little phones.

I've got an HTC desire Z - had it since Christmas. Very nice and especially handy if you need to actually type anything.

horses for courses

personally i think you would be hard pressed to beat the HTC HD2

comes with windows 6.5 which is crap but great for memory map

and with a quick flash you can be running android 2.2, 2.3, unbuntu whatever you like

Almost glad I am tied to my Desire for another 9 months or so, seems like a bit of a transitionary phase.

having had a "windows" phone when they first came out i have an irrational fear of them, android has been excellent so it'd take an exceptional improvement over android to make me go near a microsoft phone OS ever again

I like my HD2 but I can see why its not everyone's cup of tea. From what I've seen of my daughters Mozart I wouldn't touch a Windows Phone 7 phone yet but there is an update due soon which will address some of the issues like cut & paste.
I think my current choice would be the Desire HD (but then I wouldn't be able to use Memory Map).

I used to dual boot my HD2 day to day I would use andriod but i couldn't let windows go because of memory map.

Now with mm tracker (android app) windows has finally been put to bed

Android is the future in my eyes.

Motorola Defy.

It's about 10 times smaller than an iphone and thus can fit in your pocket.

I got one last month and it is great, especially with the peace of mind that you aren't going to scratch it or damage the thing.

Another happy Defy user here. Wasn't sold on the whole smartphone thing until they would comfortably sit in my jeans pocket and not need some fancy case and screen protectors before using them outside of a clean room.

midlifecrashes +1

The only downside is people don't gasp in awe at your amazing fashion accessory when you put it on the desk/table for all to see.

Aren't all electronics in a permanent "transition" phase. No matter what you plump for in 4 to 6 weeks there will be something else along that will make you go - "oh if I'd only waited".

I have been thinking about an upgrade as my E72 is basically a bit rubbish.

Lots of people I know really like Android so might be giving that a go. Motorola Defy seems like a good idea.

Got a shiny HTC Desire HD waiting for me when I get home to replace my Nokia N97 Mini POS.

Not fussed about how big it is, because I specifically want a big screen. I work outside and despite not having scratch resistant glass the Nokia survived, so I expect no less of the HTC.

As for flip out keyboards as per HTC Desire Z - I never use mine on the Nokia.

Speaking from experience, I'd be very wary of any handset manufacturer that comments like this apply to:

Upgrade to Android 2.2 planned for Q2 2011

Froyo (Android 2.2) has been out on wide release now for a good six months at least. Gingerbread (2.3) is currently appearing on some handsets and filtering down through the ranks. Finally getting round to releasing an Android revision on a handset six months after the version that supercedes it is widespread is unacceptable, IMHO.

In some cases there are workarounds; depending on the handset there's often plenty of independent developers / hackers working on unofficially porting new ROMs and software, though the ease of installing these varies quite wildly (and will almost certainly invalidate your warranty).

I've been burned by this in the past, and it's why I'll never own a Samsung or Sony Ericsson handset powered by Android. If Motorola are playing the same game, that's another manufacturer to strike off my list.

Cougar - I had no idea what any of your post meant.

My phone can make calls, will that do?

Cougar, does it realy matter whether it 1.6, 2.1, 2.2 or 2.3. My sony erricson updated to 2.1 a while ago from 1.6 and can't say its drastically improved my life. To the average user, im willing to bet that having the latest software is little more than bragging rights....

It may not matter to everyone (I did say "I'd be wary"), but it matters to me because developers drop application support for older versions. Prior to O2 giving me a Desire (after a long complaint letter and a lengthy phone call), I had a Samsung Galaxy. Despite 2.2 being current, the phone was officially stuck on 1.5 and hackable to 1.6 - four generations old.

Applications were coming out which required 2.0 or above. Despite there being no technical reason why these apps wouldn't work on my hardware, I couldn't use them. As time goes on, this situation will only worsen.

There are other reasons, and yes, one of them is "I want the new shinies" of course; and there were other problems with the Galaxy too which finally prompted me to whinge at O2.

Look at it this way perhaps. Would you buy a PC if you were told that it could only run Windows XP, and that Windows 7, Linux etc would never work on it? Would you be cross if you found this out after the fact?

Loving my new Desire HD so far.

First impressions - erm.... it does all the shit that my N97 was supposed to, but didn't.

i.e. I can send emails, watch videos, remain connected to the internet, find contacts easily, use sensible predictive text, erm... actually enjoy using the bloody thing

You know, that's a great way of summing up my Desire, only for me you can cross out "N97" and put "Samsung Galaxy and two Windows Mobile devices".

Having had an ipod touch for ages, and also a Samsung touch screen phone, I was alarmed to find my son's new LG phone requires a fairly hefty pressure on the screen to make it work. I'd avoid anything like that in the future. I presume not all android phones are like that.

samuri - your son's phone more than likely has a resistive touch screen, rather than a capacative.

Not necessarily a bad thing (unless the pressure required is a real PITA), just that one works on pressure and the other electrodes. On the flip side, his will work with a stylus, where the more sensitive capacitive screens require a finger or such like.

I have a Samsung what does calls and texts and pics and videos and has a cam and a radio and internets and everything.

Cost me twenty pounds brand new.  🙂

Oh and the battery lasts a few days longer than an iPhone....
