I quite fancy a peacoat for a reasonably smart casual and warm winter coat. Looking around they go from ratty see-thru ex-Navy ones for £25 to silly money hand made by undiscovered tribes in the Amazon basin etc. etc.
Can anyone recommend good quality brands to look at? I'd prefer high wool content and regular fit (I've got relaxed geo). UK made if possible

Reasonably priced and a good range of sizes. But only 50% wool.
I bought a new without tags Folk brand ‘archive’ pea coat recently on eBay for £60. Think retail was about £300.
I’ve been looking at the leather ‘Kreigsmarine’ type,
Ooof, they have a whiff of 90s boyband or Gestapo officer about them depending on the rest of your outfit!
Also £100 for a leather jacket will certainly land you something of very dubious quality.
OP, given the Peacoat is a pretty standard classic silhouette (ie most of them look very similar) the Community Clothing one linked above looks a good price for a UK made 100% wool jacket.
I got one from the Barbour factory outlet shop up on Tyneside, if you're ever in the area - it's great, but very heavy - makes my shoulders hurt if i wear it for too long!
i have this coat. nice fir than a pea coat, which IMHO has a horrible collar.
Worth looking at M&S, I picked up a nice one from the a couple of years ago
I have quite a nice 'Italian' wool one from M&s... It wasn't cheap but it must be 15 years old now so they probably don't do the same one any more!
I'm not sure it's strictly a peacoat.. It's kind of semi smart semi military style if that makes sense.. Comes down to mid thigh.
suggest looking on Vinted too. I just picked up a pretty nice deal on a Fjallraven coat
Pete Doherty probably has a few that he doesn't fit any more.
Mine is a John Lewis one. A few years old now, and nicer than the current M&S offering I was looking at last weekend. Not to say that John Lewis's hasn't been degraded in the intervening time of course. It's got a a high neck, zip up insert behind the buttons which makes a big difference to the warmth, but can be removed too for scarf use.
Edit - looks like they don't do the same one any longer, but have a decent choice online.
I bought a Schott one about 20 years ago which I'd thoroughly recommend apart from the fact they are a tad pricey now.
Gloverall make some great quality stuff - bought my Mrs one of their duffel coats a while back and I have an overcoat. Really nicely UK made.

I have a Superdry Commodity one that I bought as it is a slim fit. Most pea coats I tried on seemed to be swamp me. You'll need to a size bigger in the Superdry. They're out of production but but you can pick them up on Vinted. Get the orange lined one as it is a heavier quality than the dark lined version.

As soon as I saw ‘Buzz Rickson’s’, I thought ‘oof’! I wasn’t wrong. They became famous through featuring in William Gibson’s book ‘Pattern Recognition’, Cayce Pollard, the main protagonist, wears a black MA1 flying jacket from Buzz Rickson’s, except they never made such a thing, they make obsessively accurate reproductions of military and work clothes, and there was never a black MA1. They got so many requests, they started making black MA1’s, sold as ‘Pattern Recognition’ MA1. And they ain’t cheap! My mates got one that he bought when they were first released, they were cheaper then.
I’d love one of their Pea Jackets, I like the hand warmer pockets, which not all versions have, but it’s difficult to justify the cost.

It’s probably worth pointing out at this juncture, that Pea Coats/Jackets, are pretty much defined by the fact that they’re double-breasted, being a military issued uniform originally.

There are a few differences AFAIK. Peacoats are usually double breasted, lined, and are often longer - mine is almost knee length. Donkey jackets are single breasted, unlined, and have shoulder patches to keep the rain off while you're working outside in manky weather. I think both are wool. There may be other differences!
Peacoats are not longer - at their longest, they cover some of your buttocks. Longer than that and you’re into Bridge coat territory. Bridge coats should come to the top of your thighs. After that you’re moving into Trench coat territory which goes from knee to ankle length depending on the military in question.

And on that note, have you considered a trenchcoat instead anyway OP? Better outline IMO and potentially keep you warmer and dryer.
Trench coats are okay for standing on guard duty or pretending you're in Laibach (black leather to nail that look).
It's solely for casual stuff and walking to the pub, taking parents for a leg stretch in a NT site etc.
I have a house full of outdoor clothes for walking, skiing, cycling. I want something smart but not too smart with natural fibres that I can keep for many years if I look after it

I reckon any of these coats have the potential to look a bit "Herr Flick" if you get it wrong though.

I stand corrected! But I also stand with nice warm legs, so, you know, swings and roundabouts.
TBF I have never needed the increased agility (e.g. to climb the rigging or what have you) that a peacoat would afford, so it works for me. It also doesn't have brass buttons, which wouldn't really be my kind of thing.
