So, I'm after a cheap low effort patio at the end of the garden. About 5m x 5m.
Some kind of outdoor matting to go straight on top of the grass.
I don't care about undulations etc.
Any ideas please?
Something like this (used to create walkways etc for festivals & other outdoor events)?

Thanks, a bit pricey though. I think I might go with fake grass but just strip off the existing sod and not bother with the sand formation

weve used this on two houses now.
Block setts on a flexible plastic mat.
we set ours on a flat-enough sand bed, and brushed lean mix into all the gaps, im not sure i woudl reccomend just lying it on an organic surface.
Its a lot easier than a patio, and more forgiving. Also, if it settles at all it doesnt ruin the whole thing and you just let moss grow in any cracks.
I think this is your cheapest and easiest option that wont be massively crap, but you still need to find 1500 quid for the setts, and whatever else you need for subbase and pointing, and do a fair amount of manual labour.
I guess thats why people do decking.
I'm not sure there's much you can do that won't look crap or very quickly degrade - fake grass directly onto soil will very quickly start coming up at the edges - but if you really want something quick and dirty, and cheap, how about coconut/coir matting like they use in marquees. Often available second hand from the marquee trade. Try here: https://curlew.co.uk/cat/205/carpet-and-matting Peg it down well to stop it coming up at the edges and tripping over it all the time.
A rug or a chunk of Lino/Vinyl? You could get a tile pattern that even looks like a patio.
Weeds will grow straight though fake grass.
Old pishy mattress and some cardboard.

All of these options are going to look proper shit once it rain and you walk on it and all the mud oozes through.
Don't be lazy just do a bit of work and get something that will actually be useful?
Weed membrane stuff and gravel. Just need to dig down to the depth of gravel you want. Load of online gravel calculators. Few hundred quid max.
Yeah joshvegas you got a point. Mud is likely to suction through over time. I see this as a get me through for now option
Gravel idea sounds a good half way house but then I may as well go the whole hog
