We will be in touch
Following this thread below, it looks like before the end of this year we will be moving to the Oswestry area.
https://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/oswestry-biking-other-things-to-do/
I've spent some limited weekends there over the last few months and have found the road biking amazing in to the Berwyn Mountains on deserted deserted country lanes. I haven't had the opportunity to take the mtb down apart from a visit to Llandegla.
We think we want to live in a triangle ish of Chirk, Ellesmere Oswestry, although I much prefer hills so its probably the west side of the area.
At the weekend will looked at a development in Ellesmere and one in south Oswestry (Morda)
We would really like to live in Selattyn but just wonder if it is too remote for our 8yr old son.
Where should we avoid, and where has good mtb from the door? (if possible around the area, as I currently have it from the door)
Also, anyone got a job going đŸ˜‰
Be prepared to develop a really strange cornish sounding accent.
Llandegla 40 mins away, Llangollen less than that, Could be worse places to live for MTBing.
What a lovely area to move to! I've walked in the Berwyns and also rode the classic Wayfarer route. Tricky with a young lad, probably best not to be isolated however appealing it may be.
I was going to suggest Selattyn, my mate lives out there with 2 daughters, the eldest is about that age.
Although you can use the canal to access loads of good riding from Chirk which is a bonus.
I live in Oswestry, there is great riding up the Racecourse/Candy woods and go a bit further and you are in the wilds, really depends on how far you want to ride. I guess where to live depends on budget really and what your after, if you only have one car then living out of town can seem quite isolated. Lately have noticed a lot of people moving up from the South, seems money goes a lot further up here. I live on the outskirts on the west. I like this end of town, its nice and quiet and only takes 10 mins to walk into town, have a look around the Hampton road/Llanforda/High Fawr area, bigger plots than the newer houses.
The town itself has seen better days to be honest, lot of shops have closed, but that is the same in most market towns across the country. There is a new large housing development planned for the east of town on the Shrewsbury road, 600 houses I think, so that should bring a boost to the area.
Selattyn is one of the better villages in the area and it has a popular primary school. Not sure I would go Chirk or Ellesmere, or even Weston Rhyn/Gobowen/ST Martins to be honest.
Oswestry is a low paid area, but it depends on what you do as Wrexham is 16 miles-Shrewsbury 17 miles-Chester 25-Telford 35 Miles, so travel to work is fairly easy, I work in Chester so depending on what time I leave its between 40-60 mins in the morning. Train Station in Gobowen on the Chester/Shrewsbury line. I know some people who commute to London a couple of times a week.
Thanks for all the responses so far.
Mrs FD is currently living mid week in Weston Rhyn and although a slightly odd place we quite like it.
Our some will be going to school in Ellesmere (probably)
I currently work in NHS Finance. I had discounted Chester in terms of journey time but may look again as that’s not too bad. (In Leeds it takes 1+ hrs to do 10 miles)
Job wise though I have the opportunity to do what I like but as Reign Man suggests wages appear to be lower and jobs less available.
Reign Man - All very useful stuff, thank you
Its quicker travelling north Wrexham/Chester as its mainly Dual Carriageway, travelling south Shrewsbury/Telford can take longer. There is a big industrial estate in Wrexham and a Business park in Chester just off the dual carriage way.
