Went to watch Orbital at the Oxford O2 last night. Can't believe much I enjoyed watching 2 men starting and mixing loops of sound together. It was ace.
Just wanted to say.

Hey, so did I.

Not my sort of thing at all, I went cos my OH wanted to go. Credit were it's due, whatever they're paying their sound engineers it's not enough.

OMG: just found this on Orbital forum, looks like our club night was there first gig.

1989

Although still without name, Paul & Phil Hartnoll play live for the very first time at The Grasshopper in Westerham, a ‘Bernie Inn-style’ establishment complete with carvery and big plates, located somewhere on the Kent/Sussex border. Late as usual with names and titles, the Hartnolls elect to call themselves Orbital in celebration of the M25, that dreaded stretch of tarmac that encircles the capital and which at the time plays a central role in the Rave and Acid House scene in the South East. ‘Chime’ is recorded at home in Dunton Green near Sevenoaks on skeletal studio equipment and is mastered from cassette for release on Jazzy M’s independent Oh-Zone label. There is a buzz surrounding the track and the original one thousand 12? singles sell out immediately through word of mouth. More copies are pressed up but supply cannot satisfy demand.

I've seen them a daft amount of times, including one of the definitely our last ever gigs, at Brixton Academy.

I managed to find myself in their dressing room at a gig in Sheffield in 1996. Very nice, friendly chaps, they gave me a beer and chatted away to me, despite the fact I was plainly gnawing my own face off. Earlier in the night I thought I'd lost my 'supplies', when in fact I had simply imbibed them all, so I went and found the same vendor, and bought the same again. He even gave me discount once I'd told him I'd lost the first lot 😯

If one was to start dabbling in some Orbital CDs, which ones would be best to start with?

One of the best vibes at a gig I've ever experienced. One of the lads I new from Manchester(u-ziq)was supporting them at Barrowlands in Glasgow.

I felt like a pop star; backstage and all that stuff.

Turned into a mental weekend!

My god that brings back memories....anyone else see them at Glasto in 1994? One of the best live music experiences of my life which admittedly is a weird thing to say from a die hard guitar fan about two bald blokes with silly glasses standing behind a computer... but it was awesome.

I'd start at the beginning with the eponymous "green" (1991) and "brown" (1993) albums.

The last album was (surprisingly) brilliant too.
Saw them years back and they were much better than I expected. Fab.
Was offered free tix to the Oxford gig, but only the day before 🙁

I was disappointed by them at Brixton Academy. But I may have been the only non-chemically enhanced person in the gig.

Long Range at Glade (Phil Hartnoll's side project) was a different matter entirely. I bought the album as soon as I got home.

I saw them a week past Sunday In Edinburgh and strangely 'Yodagoat' has just posted up the above vid with 'One big moment' as the soundtrack.

I thought they were absolutely superb and like seeing the Stone Roses in the summer time actually felt like I was E'd up again . Its fairly annoying that todays kids pay loads of money to see the likes of David Guetta press play and wave his hands to really poor music.

God bless the Hartnolls.

Saw them @ Glasto in 94 for 'that' gig, and saw what was supposed to be their last ever Glasto gig in 2004(?) which was great as well.

Glasto 94 will always be remembered as one of the best weeks of my life.

Went to see them at the O2 in Sheffield on Saturday, top show!

Last time I saw them before that was New Years Eve 1999/2000 at the Cream event at the Pier Head in Liverpool, that was a good night too!

What a weekend - only regret was I missed Johnny Cash.

**** didn't know Johnny Cash was there at all

*, what a missed opportunity

Saw the Beastie Boys though. And I'm still glad I refused to watch Oasis.

Beasties! Remember they asked crowd to stop moshing so much or they'd stop playing.
Didn't even realise oasis were on, wasn't interested in indie guitar in '94. Another highlight was the brazilian samba band in the cabaret marquee - rockin. Best glasto by miles for me

I also saw them at Glastonbury 94 on acid. Saw them again in London NYE at ali Pali in 96 on nothing at all, coffee perhaps. What a crap night.
Gong/system7/primal scream night at 93 was the one for me.

seem to master posting Videos these days .

I think the above is worth a watch , shows they aren't just press play merchants. Good to see that even in a empty studio the boys are digging the music.
Without sounding like a bore , Im sure the reason that as an old gadgie I can feel the same watching Orbital , The Roses and decent DJ's and feel Euphoric like I did E'd up all those years ago has to be the Nostalga boosting my serotonin level. 🙂

Or could be my melons being firmly twisted.

Interesting that someone above mentions ?-Ziq, as it was chatting to Mike Paradinas that got me into Orbital's dressing room.

I know that witnessing the birth of your first child is meant to be the zenith of good experiences, and the most euphoric you'll ever feel, but I have to, perhaps shamefully, admit that the happiest I've ever felt, in all my 35 years, was during an immense rush whilst watching Orbital at The Point in Dublin in 2000. Sweet Jebus, that was good. It wasn't even one of the classics, but it very nearly took my head clean off.

Admittedly, I now have to take a prescribed serotonin-balancing tablet every day, for most likely the rest of my life, but for that experience alone it's probably worth it.

Having bought tapes of theirs in 99/00 and seen them 5 or 6 times through to 95 I have to say that although the light shows were great music has moved on. I was a pretty early adopter and fan before the masses picked up on them but now other stuff does it for me. I can't imagine going to see them now.

Yep same for me too. It's just nostalgia that people go to see them for these days. Sure the early albums still stand up but they should have thrown in the towel years ago. All the reforming crap is just a hype generator.

It's the same with the Spice Girls.

Another for Glastonbury in 94. As someone who has never partaken in drugs, I can understand as to why one might do. But the music, the lasers, the sky, the crowd...

Also saw them at Glastonbury in 1994. Awesome.

I was down the front.

Glasto '94: everybody else in my year finished their A-Levels on the friday... some of us had a Geology practical exam on the following monday. 😕

Seen them a couple of times at Glasto and this week at Bournemouth. I can honestly say the set they played on Weds night was the best.

Or maybe it was the small intimate venue. Just awesome.

Ya know. Before I went to the gig on Weds I felt the same. But they've refreshed the set and the music. The new album has a more drum and bass feel to it (to appeal to the youngsters no doubt) but even the old classic / favourite tunes have been refreshed for the live set.

Definitely worth a revisit live if you get chance. Especially in a small venue where it is a wall of sound and an awesome lightshow.

was there @ Glasto in '94 post A-Lvl exams / pre Geology Practical exam (the festival was perfect revisions for this; i.d. animal / mineral / vegetable specimens)... However do not recall the sounds system cutting out, but was quite entranced by a nearby mega-strobe coming from a market stall that was kida out doing the light show on on the NME stage.
That Orbital were playing again live was news to me...am sure also I went to there last ever gig! Groovy thread. Cheers, J
