upstairs fireplace has been blocked up sometime ago.  I want to open it up and make a feature of it.  presume I just chip the plaster off and the infill should be obvious?  it' not going to be put back into use so I plan to close it off, but with a recess.  any gotchas I.should be thinking off?

second q...i want to move.a door 5 inches over in the alcove to.the side of the fireplace so it is central (and can then be hidden) I don't believe it is load bearing.  I'll check in the loft before.i.jave a crack.  for the sake of.5 inches should I just whip out the door frame cut 5 inches off on side and use the brick.to infill.the other side?  do.i need to worry about bracing?  again any gotchas?  this door has a repaired crack above it, so may not have a lintel but its been okay since the 30s.

fireplace will be obvious once plaster is removed could be anything from bricked up to covered with wood to full of rubble. It will be incredibly dirty work
