My house has a gas fire fitted into an old open fireplace.
The gas fire is the type with and open flame and some 'fake' coals that get hot, a bit like this:
When it's running, it tends to make the room smell a bit 'gassy'. I did a smoke test on the chimney/flue (with the fire running) and found that a fair bit of smoke didn't go up the chimney, which probably explains the smell.
My question is this: should the exhaust gap at the top of the fire (above the flames) be directly connected to the chimney flue?
As it is, the gap opens directly into the old stone fireplace behind, and flue is located at the top of that.
My guess is that the big cold open fireplace behind the gas fire means that the exhaust gas from the fire enters that chamber and cools meaning there isn't any real draw up the flue, hence the fact that the exhaust doesn't all seem to go up the chimney.
Has it been fitted by a monkey, and do I need to get it sorted?
