Been meaning to get a new turntable for ages - got loads of my dad's records I've not been able to listen to as well as a sizeable collection of my own.

Was perusing ebay and stumbled across a chap who took early retirement and now makes what are meant to be very good turntables and tonearms. All of his own design and bar things like the motors he machines all the parts himself.

Seems he makes a couple, sells them, buys the parts for the next one etc. Can't resist a proper bit of 'garden shed' engineering so took a punt. Will feed back on how it sounds but the design of the desk is very clever - looks to isolate the motor from the tonearm very well.

The arm is a thing of beauty - would love to be able to knock something like that up. Note the arm shown on the deck is coming off to be replaced by the custom carbon / brass one...

:D. Reminds me of when I caught a friend trying to do spin backs on my Rega Planar 3! Amused I was not.

The platter is a Rega one and the motor is likely one too. He uses a lot of Rega parts and often uses their tonearms as ‘stock’ options.

The tonearm I’ve got coming was actually being sold separately.

£500 all in. The deck spec’d with the silver arm would have been £400 and he has another turntable with a Rega RB250 arm for £365.

Assuming they sound as good as people say then I think they’re very well priced. He makes them for the love of it and purposefully keeps a low profile so he isn’t inundated with orders.

He makes about 20 turntables per year and a handful of tonearms so not common at all 🙂

You need something to listen to them on though 🙂

Looks pretty good. That arm reminds me of the old Mayware uni pivot design.

That arm reminds me of the old Mayware uni pivot design.

Although it is actually a dual pivot.

Full vta and azimuth adjustments as well. He’s sent me the instructions and it’s a pretty advanced design - he’s been honing it for 12 years now!

if you are using a felt mat on there, like for a rega, then try one of those cork ringmats, or make one like it as they are poor value for money.

they really do make a difference - maybe similar to upgrading your cartridge.
