Just built a bot which tweets new forum topics. Follow @stwforum for even lower productivity 🙂
Tweet or post here to request enhancements.
STW powers that be, happy to turn it off if you don't like it.
sort the egg out 🙂
Sort something out. Haven't a clue what you mean mate.
Suggestions and/or donations to replace the egg? Reckon I could use the ST logo?
It tweets every new topic?
use stw logo & write its un official in biog with website link 🙂
@Harry_the_Spider yep. not the classifieds though
@timc done
i reckon you can change the appearance name to STW Forum bot, unofficial in description should cover it
Have followed.
May unfollow if my feed gets clogged with notifications of what tyres/coffee machine/audi a4 threads.
So, YOU decide if WE want our posts on Twitter?
No. You don't decide.
no, you now decide when you post 🙂
I'm going to set up @oflashearty to tweet just yours flash. 😛
Already done it, DD. 😉
Tim, why? Why do you get to decide what is posted to ****tter? Those who post on this forum are doing just that. Posting on this forum. They are not posting elsewhere. They are posting on this forum. Yes, fine, it's searchable elsewhere, etc, but the decision of the forum poster is to post it here. You should respect their decision.
You want me to take the usernames out of the twitter posts? No probs, just say so. will take 10 minutes.
the point of an RSS (commonly taken to mean Really Simple Syndication) feed as provided by the forum software (and what I use to get the posts) is to syndicate the content to other outlets. I don't think I'm doing anything that is against the spirit of the data provided.
Just now:
@oflashearty whinged about twitter. Again. And he called it ****ter. He doesn't care about twitter though. Or does he?
I was joking CaptainFlashheart, settle down 8)
Its a link to a post on an open public forum, really don't see why your bothered? like you say its there for all to see via google amongst other places...
I think its great myself & will find it useful, fair play for setting it up!
people can read what goes on here?
FFS who knew and what about the dolphin children
(followed just to make my twitter look more used)
If the Unofficial STW bot follows me back is that cyber stalking?
It tweets every new topic?@Harry_the_Spider yep. not the classifieds though
Not sure why I'd want my twitter timeline clogging with every post on here when I could just look on here.
I'm oot.
its every new thread / topic, not every post
OK. I stand corrected.
How many is that a day typically?

They're posting to the internet, it's completely public so I fail to see the big deal? AFAIK (could be wrong, often am) I could do anything I like with the data I could scrape from posts on here, part of the reason why people should think before they post...

That's a quaint view.
Do you have nothing else to do??
Do you have nothing else to do??
It's a bot, he only had to do it once 😉
How many is that a day typically?
How long has the bot been tweeting?
239 posts so far.
TWITTER IS FOR TWITS TWITTER IS FOR TWITS TWITTER IS FOR TWITS TWITTER IS FOR TWITS TWITTER IS FOR TWITS TWITTER IS FOR TWITS TWITTER IS FOR TWITS TWITTER IS FOR TWITS
PERSONALLY I THINK ITS DISGUSTING, WHAT I POST ON HERE IS ONLY FOR PEOPLE ON HERE TO SEE. IMAGINE IF STRANGERS COULD LOG ON AND SEE ALL THE PRIVATE STUFF ON THE FORUM?!?!
RETWEET MY POSTS IF YOU WANT BUT I'LL BE STARTING EVERYTHING I WRITE WITH 140 CHARACTERS OF 'TWITTER IS FOR TWITS' BEFORE WRITING MY IMPORTANT OPINION ON STUFF.
YOU DISGUST ME, YOU DISGUST THE FORUM, AND WORST OF ALL YOU'VE LET YOURSELF ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD!
IT COULD BE A BLOODY KIDS FACE NEXT TIME.
Shouty man frighten me
I'LL BE STARTING EVERYTHING I WRITE WITH 140 CHARACTERS
Apparently it's being cut to 135 characters in the budget today.
TWITTER IS FOR TWITS TWITTER IS FOR TWITS TWITTER IS FOR TWITS TWITTER IS FOR TWITS TWITTER IS FOR TWITS TWITTER IS FOR TWITS TWITTER IS FOR TWITS TWITTER IS FOR TWITS
SHUT UP, DONT YOU KNOW YOU'RE BEING TWITTED RIGHT NOW?!?!?!?!
244 posts since 18 Mar, 12:42 PM
Fascinating they are too.
It's a bot, he only had to do it once
shhh people will want to know if the bot is being treated nicely
So this is going to drop roughly 240 tweets into my time line every day?
Sorry for being pedantic, but I'm not sure of the point of it.
So this is going to drop roughly 240 tweets into my time line every day?
Not if you don't follow it 🙂
I guess it's in case you're worried about missing a new thread and use Twitter a lot. (I'm not and I don't.)
Me too. I guess it's an age thing.
Good work. Would it be cheeky to ask if you'd be happy to share the code? I realise it's stuff that I can google easily, but a working example is worth a thousand words 🙂
it's more interesting than a lot of twitter feeds so far....
This is quite cool actually. Good work.
possibly more use as a classifieds watcher bot for the traders 😉
Following as C00lhandluke
Might unfollow if it gets too much though.
Also, not sure my productivity can drop much further than "hardly anything"
I like this. But I'm pondering the issues surrounding how it's been set up and the use of our logo. Gah! Nothing is simple is it 🙂
I don't want to come across as overly harsh but we've put a lot of time and money into protecting our brand and although this has clearly been done with the very best of intentions it's the possible implications for what can/could/maybe will happen in the future that is worrying me.
I'm chatting with the OP about this and we'll definitely sort something out here.
Like I said, I like this in principal 🙂
@Harry_the_Spider I wanted to play with heroku and twitter, this seemed quick and easy, if people find it useful, great. If not I've learned some stuff. (Also twitter clients are better than RSS clients)
@Bez - yep. It's Java I'll make it less hacky and put on github in next couple of days.
@mikewsmith maybe, would be easy to do, as separate account. you want?
@will thanks 🙂
hell no they all get upset if you ask postage to Australia and payment via my uncle in the UN....
generally like some tech mashing though and the idea is a good one potentially as a multiple forum classified thing or as a force for good as a stolen bike Tweeter collecting from all forums etc.
it does seem a bit weird having stuff said on here broadcast* to the outside world, whilst this is still a public forum I say stuff on here I wouldn't say in a "proper" public place (all the bike and computer game geekery for starters). But then I'm a privacy obsessed luddite like flashy** so what do I know.
*to a select few people who actually look at/follow it
** 😉
The content of posts isn't displayed in the twitter feed. To see that actual content you need to click the link in the post and that brings you right back here. So it's not really posting anything but the forum post titles to twitter and then the only people I imagine will follow that account are people who 'inhabit' the forum anyway - so I'm not really sure the worries over 'broadcasting' are that valid. Considering that the typical ratio of actual readers to actual posters on here is around 100:4 what you post on here is being read ('broadcast') a lot wider than most people realise anyway.
Sorry, not a Twitter user. Is the username of poster shown in the twitter feed? Don't like the idea of becoming a Twitter user by proxy.
Change the logo for a small picture of an Audi A4. There'll be no doubt then what it relates to.
RM.
my post was kinda tongue in cheekso I'm not really sure the worries over 'broadcasting' are that valid
that's a whole lotta lurkers, is that 100 seperate IP views vs IP posts or just page hits vs posts?typical ratio of actual readers to actual posters on here is around 100:4
typical ratio of actual readers to actual posters on here is around 100:4
Or, 25:1, of course. (-:
I posted this via my bot 🙂

😆
Most of what I post comes via my bottom.
My bot just winked at you 😉
that's why you don't work for marketing, 100:4 is much sexierOr, 25:1, of course. (-:
Sorry for being pedantic, but I'm not sure of the point of it.
This for me. I used twitter for updates from my daughters school and not much else.
I can't see the point of it and I'm not sure I like it. I would have thought that ST towers would be against this as it could reduce the number of people browsing the forum and this would hit advertising in some way.
There should be an opt-out for those who do not want their posts linked to twitter.
Or 4% of users post and 96% lurk, which is where I derived the 100:4 from 🙂
Or should that be 96:4? In which case it's 24:1 🙂
this as it could reduce the number of people browsing the forum and this would hit advertising in some way.

What about Google? Search for any post in Google and STW shows up.
It's only going to be followed by people who already use the forum anyway.
and that's why you don't do the numbers on countdown 😉Or 4% of users post and 96% lurk, which is where I derived the 100:4 from

How so, if anything it would do the opposite wouldn't it?
What about Google? Search for any post in Google and STW shows up.
But you actually have to search, this information is being pushed.
It's only going to be followed by people who already use the forum anyway.
By using this you can see what is on ST without actually visiting? If so then surely this would have the potential to reduce visits.
How so, if anything it would do the opposite wouldn't it?
Why? You visit here to see what's been posted. If you can do that without visiting here then the number of visits could drop. Or am I looking at this wrong?
It will only show the new topics that are added. So you won't know what's actually in a topic or when a topic is updated. At least that's my understanding.
double post
It will only show the new topics that are added
and if nothing interests you then you will not bother visiting the site.
and if nothing interests you then you will not bother visiting the site.
So where's the issue?! 🙂
And if anything, finding posts through Twitter is more difficult that Google - you have to log in to Twitter, know the account name to follow.. etc.
And if anything, finding posts through Twitter is more difficult that Google - you have to log in to Twitter, know the account name to follow.. etc.
Not quite true. You can view tweets in the twitter timeline but I can't imagine many people doing that (bots though, sure). Given the diversity of topics on here i expect that the bot will get a lot of bot replies, replying to keywords in topic titles.
Or should that be 96:4? In which case it's 24:1
No, cos those who post also read the topics.
Oh wait - what am I saying? As you were.
Another way of doing this, without coding, is to use a service like www.dlvr.it
Just tell it what RSS feed you want to use, point it at your Twitter account, and it will do the rest. Very useful for connecting up various different sources of information.
Thanks, I'll have a butcher's at some point...
Or 4% of users post and 96% lurk, which is where I derived the 100:4 from

I though that was just because they didn't have a dress in his size
It seems to double post sometimes.
I got two notifications of the Borrowed Knee pads in Shoreham.
Seems to retweet the thread if the OP comments again. (I think).
