Forget Seattle & Detroit.
Liverpool had it's moments, As did Los Angeles.
Sheffield or London? Please.....

Greatest musical city of all time?

It's beautiful, sunny Manchester, all the way.... ๐Ÿ˜€

Barely scratched the surface......

Any more contenders for greatest musical city?
Thought not. ๐Ÿ™‚

London? Please.....

Are you serious? Really???

You're having a laugh really, aren't you?

You don't want me to start with you, do you?

Because you know that I will toy with you, then destroy you....

Musical parochialism misses the point, IMO.

Everyone's really crazy about musical heritage here in Beatles-land. We even have an over priced museum and a children's play area called the Yellow Submarine to prove it.

But so what?

Alice in Chains - my pick for best band ever - came from Seattle.

Quality over quantity in my book.

(I do like the Smiths, though).

London?
Pretty boys in flouncy shirts?
Sham 69?

ppppfffffffffffft.

But so what?

Very good point, makes sod all difference really.
But Manchester IS the greatest musical city on Earth.
Just saying like.

But of course M6TTF.
Think of this merely as an opening skirmish.

We can bring the big guns out later, when Elf has exhausted his supply of Jess Conrad and Lady Sovereign.

Anyway, off to work, laters!

all well and good but it's hardly a legacy to the world is it ? just a bunch of navel gazers that the rest of the world scratches their heads at.

we on the other hand, gave the world a whole genre that still lives today.....

that's

Musical parochialism misses the point, IMO.

Not for the type of Mancunian who will miss no opportuinity to insist that his (it's usually a he) city is the greatest in the world and was the first to do everything.

I wouldn't want to provoke that type of Mancunian by asking why most of their musical heroes moved to London when they got a whiff of success.

Right. You asked for it. Prepare yourselves for the onslaught.

You do know that this is going to be really, really painful for you, don't you?

Ah. I am so going to enjoy this....

Just a brief opening salvo. Don't think I've stopped though, oh no. Much much more to come. By this evening, you will be begging for mercy...

If you're not a mancunian or a hackett wearing oasis fan then no, Manchester is bollox for music. Liverpool is certainly better but not much. This scouser prefers music that comes outta Bristol by a long shot.

Tricky, Massive Attack, Portishead, Roni Size etc. Nuff said.

Just got back from a buisiness trip to Manchester, my first visit. From what I saw it's just a sort of overblown northern Croydon as opposed to some kind of edgy, trend-setting 2nd city

How many of the LSO are from London, Fred? HOw many of them songs you posted were written by members of the LSO? In fact, how many "london" bands are actually from other parts of the country...

Covers bands don't count, anyway, so that's LSO out.

(although not many people realise "step on" is a cover)

I'm a complete and utter Southerner, but even I would agree that Manchester beats London for music and culture.

The only innovative sound that sprung from London that I can think of is Two Tone.

Oh, so every single member of the bands posted by the Mancs on here are from Manchester then are they? Hmm? And did all those bands become successful/exposure by staying and performing just in Manchester, did they? hmm?

Thought not. LSO = London band. Simple as. Clue's in the name.

Erm.... Fred..... Led Zep are about as cock-er-ney as Haggis. Which London Borough does West Brom come under?

This is about where the bands were formed/originated. Where they appeared on the music scene, where they recorded, all that. Most of the members of the bands mentioned so far aren't even originally from Manchester itself, but from all the satellite towns like Oldham and all those other places. Are we talking about the scene, or the actual places of birth of the artists?

I see the Mancs are wounded. Nick Berry, Binners? Ha ha! You sillly boy!

(Is enjoying inflicting pain upon the Great Unwashed hordes of the Uncultured North....)

I din't start this. But I am going to finish it.

I'm from half way between Manc and Liverpool and while not specifically a fan of any one band/group/person I find myself finding "local" music far preferable to music from other places like that there london. I guess it comes from growing up in similar areas with similar backgrounds etc. I'd have to say Manchester wins on musical production but I can't stand the city - horrible place.
