And the best part is that with the bigger clubs dropping next season Leeds may not go up then ether. So happy.

It was one of those rare games where I wished that neither side could win.

Ahh well - bring it on Leeds United haters.

Nothing ever surprises me more than childish hatred for football teams (Leeds fan/sometime season ticket holder who resolutely refuses to 'stand up if you hate Manyuu' to the chagrin of those around me at matches).

Other than the racism and homophobia which is far worse. Why can't a football player come out? Sad really.

Sorry that confuses me - you hate Leeds because gay footballers daren't come out? You direct your hatred towards Leeds because of perceived institutional homophobia or racism within football? I think you need therapy.

I was generally commenting on your comment not the hatred of Leeds. I don't hate Leeds, far from it. I love Leeds jsut behind my number one team....Huddersfield Town ๐Ÿ˜€

But my comments were directed at unexplainable specific hatred towards Leeds because we are 'dirty'.

And these clowns will teach their children that Leeds are 'dirty' and so on...

And the majority of Leeds fans will teach their kids "we are a big and relevent club and, oh yes, you hate Man Utd". You may be he, the Leeds fan that doesn't hate Manure, but you are by far in the minority.

That is true, I clearly am. But I quite simply do not understand how anyone can hate another club. Be it Leeds, Manyuu, Chelsea, Chester, Everton, Darlington or whatever. It is clearly irrational behaviour and completely unacceptable in *almost* any other sport (ice hockey fans are a bit obsessive) and unacceptable in any other social situation.

Well, all said and done....at least Leeds arent Newcastle who seem to think they are a big club! (to me, they are more like Southampton).

Hora, do you even follow football? When 'Mighty Leeds' were relegated from the Premireship a good few years back the local press in Leeds ran headlines decrying "one of the big clubs" being demoted, whinged that it shouldn't be allowed (some even said it shouldn't have been legal!) and such comments were echo'd by a few Leeds fans I know. They truely believe they are a big club, which they are for attendances, but these days for little else. Faded glories.........

Eh!!? I don't support them, but I think it is fair to say that Newcastle are a 'big' club by any objective measure.

See here for various stats about gates, turnover etc.

As a POSH supporter I was very pleased not to have to go through the agony of the play offs. Condolences to Leeds, IME Leeds have a loyal set of fans no worse or better than many other clubs.

The fact that Leeds United see themselves as some sort of nemisis to Manchester United I find quite laughable. On team is the current English, European and world champion and the other is a 3rd divison side who kicked people in the 1970s.

Do they? Do they really? In fact, you might be surprised to hear that Leeds United players had very good relationships with the Manyuu squad when they were in the Premiership. Some of them actually spent a great deal of time socialising together.

Or do you mean the supporters? Unfortunately there are deluded supporters of every single team. Over the years, Manyuu included, no team has ever been consistently the best team. Remember that Manyuu have spent time in the lower divisions too...

It's a relief for Huddersfield Town.
It was looking like Third Division South! There are so many away trips down the M1, can't be good for the environment.

I once had a bet on with a Watford fan (mid-90's onwards) that Huddersfield would be in the top flight before Watford. He laughed, oh he laughed in the following years...

I don't follow any football team enough to comment on whether the Leeds team play 'dirty', but having stood behind the Elland Road North Stand bar during a great number of games, I would certainly say a number of the Leeds fans do.

My specific example would be a Leeds-Milwall match where the police closed the (unshuttered) bars, yet us staff were expected to stay on station. Try explaining to the Leeds faithful at half time when they're 1-nil down that you won't serve them any more beer. With nothing large and solid to stand behind, and all the Police elsewhere dealing with the fights happening in the stands. I can honestly say, of all the exciting things I've done in various places around the world, I've never been quite as scared for my own wellbeing as I was there.

Congrats on the promotion. No doubt many won't want my club to go up as they are'nt a 'proper' club, yes you've guessed it the Dons. FWIW I thought the Posh were the better club last year.
The Dons are poor in play offs and Millwall are on a roll so.....

Have you served in the bars of any other football club whose team is doing badly, the bars have been closed and the police/ground security weren't doing their job properly?

And in all my time I have never, not once seen the bars closed at Elland Road nor fighting in the Revie Stand.

You have your personal experiences - I have mine...

Apart from any track record of sustained success of course, which is perhaps the first and most important measure you'd test against. Let's not also forget that huge crowds at Newcastle are a relatively new thing. The song " where were you when you were #### ? " has never been truer than for Newcastle. In terms of size, somewhere behind Everton, Villa, Spurs.

Getting back on topic, I think most people dislike Leeds because of the totally unlikeable team of Don Revie and for the hooligan image that still follows the supporters of the club. In a game between Leeds and Milwall, I echo sootyandjim's sentiment that it's a pity that anyone had to win.

Precisely - and how many of us are old enough to actually remember those days? And the ones of us that can remember should be damn well old enough to have the maturity to recognise that it was circa 35 years ago and to harbour hatred on those grounds is simply immature. People of that age should be passing positives on to the next generation, not fostering hate.

I'd have thought that most on here can remember the team. As for the fans, that's a current, ongoing problem isn't it ?

Agreed m_f
I could never understand why back then Leeds were singled out. In the post above I claimed to be a MK Dons fan, but that's more to do with geography and local loyalty. I have been going to West Ham since the sixties and the club that will forever stick in my mind for fan/holigan violence will be Man United, but I saw trouble everywhere back then.
The banter between Leeds and MK late last year was great.

or that their personal experiences of Leeds fans- this season they came down our way and went in a 'old mans' working mans club- beat them all up then sang about how they had 'done over' a cobblers pub.
no guys you beat up some OAPs, that dont have anything to do with the football club. and one took a dump on the floor. nice.

I am 41 and only just remember the team - but certainly not old enough to have recognised any dirty football or understood any accusations of dirty play. I used to think my grandad's name for Alan Clarke ('Sniffer') was derogatory when it was actually a positive nickname.

beat them all up then sang about how they had 'done over' a cobblers pub.

That is very sad but it it is not behaviour unique to Leeds fans.

Interesting info on Newcastle attendance here. Measured as 'post war average' they are behind Everton and Spurs (and obviously Man Utd, Arsenal and liverpool) but ahead of Sunderland, Boro, the massive Man City and those johnny-come-latelys from the Kings Road

There are a small number of clubs whose supporters still retain an aura of thuggery, B'ham, Cardiff, Millwall would instantly spring to mind. Leeds would also be high on the list.

I've worked Elland Road, St James Park, Old Trafford, City of Manc stadium and Stadium of Light, plus a number of rugby grounds, including Headingley Stadium and Kingston Park, during a variety of wins and losses for all of the home teams. Elland road is the only one I've worked where anything had to be closed, although I'm told the Milwall fans played a big part in that as well, but all the same. The rugby grounds, even with mixed seating, I never heard a cross word, never mind seeing a punch thrown. I don't think aggro amongst fans is a team-specific thing, I think it's a sport specific thing. People still hold a grudge against a team from 30+ years ago, and players get away, relatively speaking, with intimidating refs (see Keane, Drogba), spitting at crowds and in extreme cases, assaulting fans (Cantona). Why is it that things like that only happen in football?

And in all my time I have never, not once seen the bars closed at Elland Road nor fighting in the Revie Stand.

Just that once. I refused to work any football ground after that - it was only a temp job and for the money I made, they weren't worth the hassle I (occasionally) had to put up with.

That I DO agree with - had a great time at England V Scotland up in Edinburgh and sat next to Scotland supporters and had a great time.

Saying that, the next day I watched Leeds v Liverpool and that was pretty good too ๐Ÿ™‚

Newcastle must have won something?!

Since the (second world) war, they've won the FA Cup in '51, '52 & '55.
They also won the Fairs Cup in '69. This was a cup for cities that hosted trade fairs. Uefa don't recognise it.

But Leeds aren't even that good at being football hooligans.

They talk a great punch-up but as some Forest fans discovered (not usually well-known for being a 'hard' crowd) they either run away or find out that Trent Bridge to River Trent is a pretty quick journey with a damp ending (much like a Leeds play-off run).

The don revie/ dirty Leeds era was well before my time, but what annoys me about weeds are the fans that spout about their massive club being too big for league one, so spending a third season in the third tier makes I laugh, with all the sh1tty little clubs like carlisle, Exeter, etc.
What also annoys me is that they only paid 7 pence in the pound for their debts whilst my club paid 100p in the pound to come out of administration, is that fair???
Should dock them another 15 points for arrogance.

A happy Carlisle fan.

Whats have Leeds United and Shahid Malik got in common?

Two things, both have had a good time without paying for it, and now the chickens have come home to roost.

In both cases a well deserved roosting too IMHO ๐Ÿ™‚

And thats also the answer to the two questions why do people "hate" Leeds?and not trust Politician's?

We had lots of weeds supporters coming to the cufc messageboard effectively suggesting we were like sh1t on the bottom of their shoe. I admit that Carlisle are a smaller club and always will be but we are in league 1 for a reason, as are weeds. we both ain't good enough to be in the championship or higher. They all seemed to have the big I am attitude, which is the reason I dislike weeds.

Yep Leeds in the past were hated because of gamesmanship and being a dirty side( and yes I'm just old enough to remember watching them)
Now they are hated for their arrogance and chip on the shoulder attitude.
eg disrupting the minutes silence for Sir Matt Busby because they felt Don Revie hadn't received the same respect.( no I'm no Utd lover but bit sick imo)
Thinking that the docking of points was some personal vendetta against them whipped up by that w***** Ken Bates.
The arrogance that because they take 2000 away fans they are too big to be in Div 1( It may be a suprise to many Leeds fans but your league position is on results on the field rather than attendance figures).
The utter contempt the fans often show to other Div 1 teams for not being as "big" as them.

Drinkmoreport I don't think Carlisle are a sh1tty little club as I've supported them throughout the bad times since the mid eighties.

Possibly true and point taken. You wouldn't call Newcastle a small club though would you?

Perhaps best measure of a big club is the support they get even when they don't win anything

as a newcastle fan, can i just point out that we don't think we are a 'big' club.
just the only club in our city.

we don't think we have some god given right to win anything, and we all acknowledge that we are shite.

that doesn't mean we didn't enjoy doing fairly well for a couple of years in the 90's. and we wish it had continued, hence the overblown welcomes for keegan, shearer etc.

we've been badly owned and managed for years, but atleast we're not leeds ๐Ÿ˜‰

My how I laughed as I read some of the stuff on this thread ๐Ÿ™‚

Folks always seem to forget how much football has changed over the years,

Yes , Leeds did know how to "stop " players, Norman Hunter Bit legs, Big Jack got in folks way and Wee Billy Bremner was a fiery Scot at times but at the same time the passing ability of Johny Giles was pure genius and Eddie Gray could hypnotize opponents with the way he kept the ball under control. One of the greatest unsung heroes of that time ( imho ) was Paul Reaney, I had the great pleasure of seeing him keep George Best totally out of a game when Bestie was at his prime, and he did it not by kicking him out of the game but by taking the ball off him time and time again.

As for the fans ... Well I'm old enough to remember the days when the away support was a laughing stock ... then one year early 70s standing on the Kop( Gelderd End ) I found myself reading an A 5 size flyer, hundreds were being passed out encouraging everyone to get to Old Trafford for the match against Manure as Leeds fans had been getting a regular runa round and kicking there for years and some lads were fed up of hearing about it off manure fans.
So I decided to book on the coach from Harrogate and go along , hoping others may do the same, imagine my surprise as I got on a LEEDS supporters coach to find it half full of Manure fans, but they were even more surprised to see the other half full of Leeds fans...
Got to Old Trafford, parked up by the cricket ground and the police were running round panicing ... away supporters at Old Trafford... what's that about ? seemed to be the attitude ... Well that day I think was the start of a big modern day away following for Leeds ( imho ) as about 5,000 of us turned up and the rest is history , we were no longer a "soft " club and easy targets for home fans.
So in a way its a big THANK YOU to Manure... without you we wouldn't be hated ( disliked ? ) by quite so many folks.

MOT
